Hi rrumba,

I think you are on the right track...wet sand...you could even start with 320 or 400 for a faster cut, but not so much that you break through to the primer...use soapy water and try to keep a constant waterfall going to continuously rinse the surface...that should put you back to a smooth surface...then reapply another coat or two using the original formula...after it has cured for the required amount of time, you should be able to cut and buff to as high a gloss as you want...

Hope this helps...
GT

Looking good. Epoxy hates UV exposure so that could have been a part of your issues.

Though shalt not paint an Evinrude black. Very dark blue is permissible, black is not.

ok, so since i have made a color change to Navy blue, and will be changing the hull as well.. ..... what other color is acceptable for a rude? do not want to much blending going on with the colors. Silver/grayish color maybe?

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

So a little update again finally, if anyone is still keeping up on this slow moving thread.....

1. Have the tilt and trim torn down and cleaning it up inside and out for new paint and rebuilding it with all the new orings.
a. need to replace the wiring from the motor to the relay box as it is cut, cracked, exposed and oxidized.
b. anyone know what gauge the 3 wires are and where a good place to source some may be, that is not hurtful on the wallet?

2. If the weather holds out today, i will hopefully get the last coat on the pieces and be done with that.

3. like grandads carpeting of the bow and sides but no the cost of the aluminum. so i have some underlayment plywood, 11.00/sheet that will be used instead and coated/sealed with porch paint then wrapped in outdoor carpet.

4. cleaning the OB completely on the outside and sanding, filling in deep scratches in prep for paint.

That is the plan, as long as the rain stays away some more.

WOG, dense is one thing you will never be accused of my friend. when i switched from acetone to thin out the paint i am using to mineral spirits, the mix got all screwy and did not flow as nice as it did when i used the acetone to thin it for the gun. first it was to thin and ran so bad that it did not leave much paint on the top of the piece and toward the bottom of them you could not really see the runs but it was much better coverage due to the running of the paint, if that made sense.

then when spraying it it acted like it was clogging the gun, and would come out to hard as the texture was more of an overspray than an orange peel. so i was not sure, still not, if the mineral spirits change over hosed me. so now that i have it all sanded yet AGAIN, i plan on spraying it one more time using the acetone to thin it since i had better results. i have not had a chance to post up the pics of after so to show the difference, will try to do that later today.

the first two coats worked well then i switched over and everything went to pooo. no shine, glossy look, just garbage

It's all about gun set-up, temps, and paint mix. Have you read this...
http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/HVLPspraygun.html

I'd recommend you try a 50/50 acetone MS thinner. 1 cup of paint, 1/4cup acetone 1/4cup MS. Adjust the gun like the article explains and give it a go. Make SURE the top of the cup has the air hole OPEN. If it's blocked it won't let the paint flow properly. Make sure the Gun is ABSOLUTELY CLEAN!!!!

WOG,
that is the article i have read several times and how i set it up for the spray so it might also have been the top vent now that you mention it but i did not pay attention to it. I make sure the gun is thoroughly cleaned after each use and before starting as well. I will give your suggestion a try although i am apprehensive about using MS at all right now. but again that might not have been the problem at all.

what is the difference between using the MS or Acetone?

thanks for your help guys.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

MS gives the paint more "Flow/Settle" Time. Acetone will cause it to "Flash/Dry" faster. If the temps are 80-90 then the 50/50 mix is good to use. Lets the paint Flow and settle a bit longer before it sets up and skims over. If it Runs it's too thin. You used to much thinner no matter the kind. Try the mix I suggested... 1 cup of paint, 1/4cup acetone 1/4cup MS. and make SURE the vent is open and give it a go. It should flow really well.

Compressor should be Wide Open Regulator @ the gun approx 35-40psi.

I painted a boat for a friend 2 or 3 years ago using that paint from Tractor Supply. If memory is correct I think on the can they said to thin with Naphtha for spraying. I used 50/50 naphtha and MS spraying black. Didn't come out to bad.

DozerII - i do believe we have the color there. i even like the split color on the cowling. Could go with the silver/gray on everything then the navy blue for the top half to blend in with the boat color. thanks for stopping by

jason - will do, where do you get yours from?

stevecur - no naptha listed, but then that would cause me to ask what it helps with and why does there have to be so many different thinners out there? it just makes things harder for inquiring minds......
