Nice work. Loved the pis of the little guys helping out... Glad you have been able to make some progress. She is coming along nicely. Sounds like you have a good plan on the corrosion, but I'll defer to the metal boat guys on that.

I thought you were a little older, Roger.

Is the corrosion where the plywood was under the O/B mount?

Actually GA, i was tired in those photos so i looked a little older than i am. the corrosion was under that board but the majority of it was between the transom wood and skin as there was no paint or protection of any kind.

i think i am getting the hang of it, at least the orange peel anyway. not sure how to keep that down to a minimum, guess i am laying down to much.

ok, got the second coat on

Here is the orange peel and some of the runs that i thought i had gotten out with the sanding between coats but guess i did a poor job.

Now although i am not real happy with the runs and orange peel, i have decided that since from about 5ft away you cannot tell, that i would wait until the summer where i can do it again and do it right by spraying it, should i choose to or if someting happens to the hull. But with roll and roll, any fix is easier at a given time without having to blend, feather etc.......

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

oh, another thing, no pictures yet but i will get them tomorrow.

I stripped down the trailer to get it ready for paint and scarping the paint it just flaked off, odd, so i decided to pressure wash it and it took off the top coat pretty easy but the bottom coat not so easy.

I think it is galvanized. So to get it back to the orignal would take to much. I want to paint it the same color as the boat and was thinking that i could give it a quick sand, vinegar wash then some primer then paint with boat color Valspar and hardner.

Does anyone see any issues with this thought process??????

Trailers are such a pain...

Here's kinda the theory that I have figured on trailers...

Knock off the loose stuff, spray everything white Rusto, repeat in a few years when it starts to rust through. Try to keep it easy and low maintenance.

If you want it done really well, sand blast it to bare, then go on to paint.

On your paint issues, I can tell you from experience that once you start using it, you really won't care. It would be tough to find a paint job that's failed as badly as line and it really doesn't bother me that much. Personally I think the trailer would look nicer in a contrasting color. White would be lovely :p

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

you know EZ didn't really think aout the contrasting colors, but that is a good point. i do bellieve you are right white may be the best "lovely" choice...... lovely..... man down, man down..... we are not on the Iaprons forums repairing boats........ ;)

I will have to go check out the HD and see what they have for the big spray cans of professional hi output nozzle types like JO used and see what colors they have, maybe a dark gray like some of the interior will be or white, which will make it pop. or yellow, red, choices now......

by the time i get the next 2 coats done the trailer should be done so i can flip it over, and get started on the inside..

thanks EZ, Dozer and of course JO trying to get this done by the end of february if all goes well

Danger Will Robinson!!! We have a timetable for splash. 2/29/12 is marked on the o'fishal Starmada splash calendar. At least you get an extra day this year.

"EZ just said 'lovely'" He's been up all night changing diapers. Of course white is lovely. BTW - Congrats on the family addition, EZ.

Very nice project! I've done a couple starcraft holiday's and recently finished this Sylvan that you could look at for ideas on floor, electrical, dash ideas, etc: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=519004. Its the exact same layout.

Concerning the corrosion - See the pic here after only two years this seat bottom was mounted on treated plywood flooring. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=519846&highlight=aluminum+treated. I learned here that aluminum does not like other metals either.

I have almost the exact same motor (but mines a 1979) and have had good results. Thought I would mention that. Check it out you may benefit from my project.

Good luck!

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

ok not much to report, but the 4th coat of paint has been completed and drying. giving it until tomorrow or this week to make sure it is hardened nicely.

trailer is torn down and almost done presssure washing it so it to can be painted this week. once i get that done then the job is to put the boat back on the trailer, right side up mind you, so the gluv-it, transom and floor can go in............. more questions to come this week about the gluv-it. when i do get her on the trailer i will have to take off the front part where it tilts at, off so i can close the door and still work on her.

The transom sure looks to pretty to put in the boat though. 2 coats of epoxy and 3 heavy ones around the edges.

Forgot to say that most of the progress during the holidys was with the help of my dad visiting. now he is at home so hopefully the kids will get back into helping out.

pics coming tomorrow

About the Orange Peel... Did you use the Ultrafine Foam Rollers? What paint mixture formula did you use? What were the Temps? Close Ups always make you wince. 5ft pics make you look like a pro. Don't sweat it. Ya Dun Rite Good!!!!
