Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

Awe, that's a pretty little glasser. Shame to cut her up. Big 'ol OMC hole int he back isn't gonna help her cause though.

It does look pretty nice but who wants an OMC???

Nice find there Drew... good to have options and a trailer that is over built vs marginal or worse. If the motor isn't what you want... as you said, you'll pay for the whole rig by selling the bits off. Exactly what I did for one of my "trailer" finds!

J.

I did some research and it's going to have the 3.8 buick motor. I can sell off the parts and make some money.

Looks like a great donor, even better if the trailer's a good fit for the SS..........

I should be able to make it fit. If not I can sell it or make it work for our deckboat which could use a tandem axle trailer anyhow.

I havn't been able to do any boat work the last week or so. It has been raining quite a bit and we got about 2" of snow last night. This snow is such a bummer. I'm ready for spring to be here for some good fishing and boating fun.

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

Today I got all the hardware stripped off the topsides. I just have a few trim pieces to take off and she will be completely gutted. Theres alot of carpet glue on the insides. I think I'm going to have this blasted off. The price will be worth the time it saves me.

Alot of this stuff in there I don't feel like dealing with.

Are you going with sand or media blasting, BN?

Ill take it in and have it blasted with crushed glass. The company I called said thats what they use on aluminum boats.

Is it shot using water? My paint guy had my bottom blasted, he mentioned they used crushed glass and water. It came out super rough, like 80 grit sandpaper. I would think that the paint will stick very well to the rough surface left behind by blasting. It worked great.

Im not sure if they use water or not. I know when I talked to them they said it will leave around an 800 grit finish.

Didn't it hurt to have your bottom blasted

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

I picked up the donor today. It is all rotted out, typical of any 70s glasser. The trailer will need a little work but should be a good fit for the SS. It only has a single leaf spring on each side, hung in the center that connects to the axles at the end s of the springs. I've never seen anyting like that before. I did get the motor and drive out so I just need to strip off a couple more things and get it hauled off.

3.8 buick omc motor.

Edelbrock automotive carb.

Nice heavy duty trailer.

Here is the single spring tandem assembly.

In the middle of the crossmembers on the trailer the tubing is kind of crushed. I will just cut these out 1 at a time and replace the metal. There is only 3 of them so I should only need about 8 feet of 3x2 tubing.

I'll throw up a few more pics as soon as they upload.

White leg of death removed.

3.8 omc flying away.

Under these rollers is where the tubing is kind of crushed. Kind of hard to tell from the pic.

I would like some opinions on the single spring suspension. I think going to double springs would be better, although there wont be alot of weight on it. The trailer did pull super nice even with the heavy glasser.

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

I wonder if the current boat overloaded the keel rollers & crushed the cross members? Is it waterlogged?

Anyway, if it towed great w/ the heavy glasser, I'd probably make it road worthy & run the dual axle single leaf spring as is. At least until you've towed the future occupant SS a few times fully loaded to confirm it works or could work better............... my $0.015........

Carp, what's a decent used Edelbrock automotive carb going for these days? Nice part to sell....

Looks like it's gonna provide a good pile of sellable boat resto funding parts!

Im gonna see what it would cost to convert it to 1 spring per wheel. It was severely waterlogged, thats probably what caused most of the trailer damage.

I can easily get $100 for that edelbrock as is.

Looks like lots of good sellable parts. Can't say as I have ever seen anything like the suspension set on the trailer though.

I've never seen anything like it either. For $200 I can get 4 new springs, brackets and hardware. I think it will be worth it to have a little more capacity although I really won't need it.

Anything is better than the single spring, dual axle set-up you have. It might have been one of those "better mousetrap" ideas that wasn't. I personally would feel safer with a conventional dual axle deal.

I agree. I have the same goofy dual axle-single suspension setup as the OP. if I get a flat tire....I'm almost just as screwed as someone with a single axle setup.

What brand of trailer are these?

I never thought of the flat tire scenario. I think it will be better to go ahead and add the extra springs now since I will be doing a bunch of work to it anyway.

I didn't see a tag or name on it anywhere but it has been repainted at some point in time so it is probably long gone.

Re: 1977 Starcraft Supersport

I did get the glasser dumped off and I winched the SS on for a test fit. The trailer is a little short. I think I will add a swing away tongue to compensate and it will help with tucking it in the garage as well. It sits nice and low on the trailer which is what I wanted.

Front of the trailer with the boat on. I still need to move it forward about 6"

Side view. I Like the way it sits on there.

I think your right Drew a swing away tongue will make it the perfect fit. Also agree on adding the proper tandem axle spring kit to it.
