Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Ok guys, got bored should be working on the boat but ohh well... And this helps visualize everything :D Thanks for the input everyone! It has really got me thinking:facepalm:. I will check out your resto soon dahogman. I really don't feel like spending too much time on my trailer and it's not in bad shape at all just needs a bit of new paint, so I might not sand but thanks for the tip.

Here are the choices, couldn't get them perfect or add the colors like I wanted to.
Sorry for the "sun flare" in these pictures it kinda gets annoying...

Yeah, my boat will get the original paint scheme back on, just like yours, except red instead of blue.

As for your trailer, I still say BLUE.

I thought you had said that Dj, but I couldn't find it. I'm now going back and forth with it now after doing those mock-ups, but I still think blue will be the winner. I need it for the stripe and topsides anyways. Just nice to see what they might look like. Thanks for your opinion as you know I do way too much thinking  :D.

That's for sure! We could start a trend here :). Too many people getting away from the cool lookin late '70's stripes :D.
They do stand out though (in a good way), I think there is another person on my same street with the the same exact boat as me (color, make, year?) I need to go knockin' on their door. I could only see the front, rest was under a tarp.

Maybe you can find him with a thread here on Iboats, seems the Starcrafters have been coming out of the woodwork lately. So much so it's taking a lot of time just keeping up with all the threads.....

I've been waiting for some folks to stick with me on the original paint scheme:)

I will be attempting to keep the stripes original when I finally paint, just been waiting for you guys to show me how it's done.:D

Huron, were you planning on keeping the yellow as well? :D

I'm going to try to get the vinyl cut this week for painting the stripe. Today I'm going to go get some more paint for the trailer and try to get that done today. It's a bit warmer today, and nice and sunny!

Well...since my rubrail is yellow, and that stuff is expensive...we are keeping the yellow stripe.:)

I'm debating what base color to use, I think light gray but maybe the original off-white would look better.

I don't blame you that stuff is expensive, I thought about taking mine off, but didn't want to murder it and have to buy a new one... Yellow and the off white should look nice. Gray might be a bit to dark in my opinion, but it is your boat. All of us Michiganders need to get our boats done :D.

Double post here sorry. I went and got my paint, but am a bit late to paint. The sun went down behind the garage and it now feels way too cold to paint in that area. Tomorrow I will get it done! I have deceided on Navy Blue so it will match my stripe and topsides, I was thinking about white. If it doesn't work I can alway repaint sometime.

Just got done with painting the trailer. Good thing you can't see it up close :D I didn't too that perfect of a job, but it will work and look a bit nicer. I can always redo it later sometime. Only thing that I didn't like how I did it was with the sprayer it was really hard to get into weird places, so I think a brush would do a better job. I'll go back in a couple days and touch up the weird spots I missed. And sorry no pictures today :(. Enjoy the sunshine!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Just tried cutting out the vinyl today. The only thing is that it's so long that we will need to cut it out by hand instead of doing it on the cutter that will have to wait for a couple weeks though. I made the template for it on Illistrator, and if anyone want's to try this pm me for the file you can probably find a sign shop nearby that can cut it out for you. I'll have more about this when it's done.

As for the plan next week I want to flip, and clean out on Monday. Then hopefully the rest of the week get my wood cut out, and transom taken out and redone. Happy Friday guys!

I like your plan to do the stripe. Did you use a photo of the boat to get the measurements right on the computer, or just by measuring?

Looking forward to seeing the paint job, good luck to ya!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks Huron! Here's what I did, this might help someone out later on. This stripe isn't an exact-exact replica, but I don't think it will be that different for anyone to notice.

Ok when the stripes were still on the boat I laid a piece of wax paper over the stripe and taped it on. I ended up not having enough wax paper to cover the whole stripe so I took some duct tape and painters tape to make a template by doing one piece over another (for the skinny part). I also traced out the stripe to the paper, and if there was any spot that went outside the paper I used the painters tape to make that area wider. Hopefully this is making sense :D Here are some shots of that process. Cell pic's sorry...

Here is how the tape laid over to make the skinny part of the stripe.

Then I went to the computer. Taped the template to the floor and started taking measurements of everything. I really focused on where it started to curve and where it was the highest and such. I also used the picture I had taken a while ago for reference. Now remember I'm just figuring things out as I went along. I then took the measurements and tried to make something look remotely close to the stripe. Hard to explain how I exactly did it, just a bit of trial and error to get things close.

Now here is a picture of the somewhat ?completed? stripe on Illustrator.

And the old stripe.

I?d say its close enough. We?ll see how it turns out in a couple weeks. Like I said I had a hard time cutting it on our cutter at school because of how long it was. So to do that I will need to make a template with the same cutter and cut it out by hand, that?s another thing that I have no idea how I will do yet :D.

She's back over right side! :D gettin there guys! Trailer looks decent, and so does the topside paint. I'm probaly going to either try to wax or polish the topsides after the stripe. Unless I feel like doin another coat up there.

Here she is!
IMG_8870.jpg

Also powerwashed out the inside, and tried to get the limber holes un-cloged. I will need to take some more time to get them to drain, some look smashed down as well. Maybe tonight.

Last thing for today was getting off the transom. That was easy :D out and done. Some rot, but not overall bad. I should have done the drill test ;) find good wood and some bad and call it all good... Nah that's on the list to do soon now too.

Ok now a question. Can I get Arauco at Lowes or Homie Depot? They are close to me, heck right next door, and with gas going up I don't want to drive out to Menards. I may think about making the trip if I can get foam and wood and any other stuff all at once if it would be worth it. What do you upper Michigan guys think?

Also one more thing... The lakes open!! :D :D

Add: I realized after looking at the stripe in my last post that the one I did on the computer is way far off from what it should be. I worked on that over the weekend, and it's lookin a bit more like it should. Glad I posted that up to look at them side by side.

Hey! She looks good sitting up like that, cool!

Not so sure that HD has Arauco, I think Lowes does. Worth a phone call anyway. Menard's is my favorite, they have it all! I can take the kiddos over to the playground, get em a snack, get some shampoo, grab marine grade ply, foam, rivets, PL, Rusto, sandpaper, a pack of gum, everything! And save big money too!:D

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks Jas! :D I've only been to Menards once, up in Traverse. I really wish they put them down here. Really is a great place for everything, I'm almost thinking of making the trip. Will be calling, or just stoping by Lowes to check it out (5 minute drive).

I still need to order my Gluvit, and Epoxy soon, and a new trailer jack. You would think I would have done that by now after all the times I said I would... Might as well get about everything I need at once.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Got the pictures last night, but didn't get around to putting them up. Here is my transom. Not bad really, just the top pieces were about gone.
IMG_8876.jpg

And the transom area on the boat. I will try to sand off the corrosion. And I've got a couple holes to fix with JB weld. Maybe tonight.

Need to order my stuff too. Gotta keep remindin myself, even though it's in every darn post...

The boat is looking good, nice work on the paint.:)

My transom aluminum looked about identical to yours. Not much damage there at all, and easy to get cleaned up with the splashwell out.

I left mine in and it's kind of a pain to get everything done.

The ice is melting pretty quick up here too:D
