Small addition to Jason's excellent advice would be to thicken the epoxy first and do it in fewer apps. Then final coat with unthickened to feather.

Just a friendly tip...

To make those seams dissappear...

Lay down a coat of epoxy just over the seams, let it completely dry, sand smooth with 80 grit.

Then, lay down another coat and feather it out a few inches further, let it completely dry, sand smooth with 80 grit.

Repeat that process like 3 - 5 times (your mileage may vary) feathering a little farther out each time, those seams will simply go away ;):)

Have fun buddy...

Maybe add a strip of cut up glass cloth to that as well

OK, Now here's where a GLASSER can come in handy!!! If you want your Deck seams to Disappear, get some 1.5oz CSM (Chopped Strand Mat) 3" tape. Sand the seam with some 60 grit, clean it with some acetone, lay done some resin, don't need no stinkin epoxy, put the tape down and use a plastic putty knife to smooth it all out. Let it dry. Sand it with some 180 grit and put another coat on. Sand it again with 220 and the seam with be GONE!!!! Now that's how a "DUMB OKIE GLASSER" would do it!!!!;)

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Just got back from a very nice, relaxing, much needed weekend up north! So nothing new on the boat to report. I'll be back at it this week and try to get the deck finished up at least. There's still tons to do! :D

I'm going to reply in two posts here. Thanks to everyone who threw out advice to me, I really will be thinking again on how to go at it tomorrow.
------------------
Did you seal the ends and underside of those panels with epoxy already?

Yup, Yup I did! 2 coats of Clarkcraft, could have went with 3 but they looked great. Also got the edges well with epoxy too.

Just a friendly tip...

Didn't want to quote your whole tip again, since it's just on the last page :D. Thanks much Jas! I'm going to sit on what I'm going to do with the seams since I got so many other suggestions, but thinking epoxy is the way to go since I already have it. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking along those lines somehow.

I sure have ton's of options now don't I? I sure did leave a door open...

Thanks Jayb, not nearly as good as others around here... But it will work.

I've went through around 1 gallon of the kit from Clarkcraft, so 1/2 gallon of resin, and 1/2 gallon of hardner. That was for two coats on each of the deck pieces, and the edges.

I think I should be good with the amount I got (3gallons) because I really wasn't planing on coating my side panels with epoxy, but rather deck paint or something else.

And yup I'm planning on sticking with the blue. I'm going to try and work on that soon enough now that my deck is in.

Maybe add a strip of cut up glass cloth to that as well

Sounds like a good suggestion as well. Not sure as of yet. Thanks EZ!

Thanks WNG!! I'm still thinking on what I'm going to do, but I like your idea.

I just don't want to have to run around and get more stuff for it when I have my epoxy already, haha.

Now if I had a glasser :D... hmmmm

Thanks again for the tips!

-------------------------

So if I hadn't said it already enough times. I really appreciate all the wonderfull ideas I get from around here. I would have no idea what to do if it wasn't for this wonderfull place. Thanks again guys!! :)

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Got a coat of epoxy on my whole deck this evening. Also got my consoles taken apart and sanded. Here's some really exciting bad cell pics, epoxy drying, aluminum pile pictures. :D

Still need to go out and get some sandpaper, and other supplies tonight. That way I can get my deck seams sanded and filled. I'm going with epoxy and some wood flour, heck it's simple enough...

Maybe painting tomorrow if I feel like it...

-------------------------------------------------

Time for some needed input guys.

First thing, after I put down my sand texture I'm going to paint. What color do you guys think would be the best for the deck? I'll be using rusto pro paints. I'm thinking black! .... kidding, kidding well if I wanted to grill I could do it then :D. Maybe a slight off white? Low gloss? Let me know.

This also goes along with the deck color, but what color should I paint my side panels, or should I get some vinyl like they are originally, and have Jas do it ;). What color for that would you guys suggest?

The only real things set in stone are going to be the consoles, transom, topsides painted navy blue rusto. That way it will go along with my trailer and side stripes(yet to come:facepalm: soon).

I think a white deck would look really sharp, till you actually used the boat - then you'd see dirt everywhere, bummer.

I am with these guys ^^^^ on the gray, will look sharp with the blue:)

Yah, I was for sure going to paint my side panels, but after seeing how nice the vinyl looks, I'll be headed that way now.

Cheers man:D

I know this isn't to boatbuilding code necessarily, but for my seams I simply put a strip of duct tape on the underside of the seam and filled in any voids with resin.

It acts like one solid piece after that.:)

Where up north did ya go BG? I'm headed to Presque Isle this weekend.:D

Thanks Glen, exactly what I was thinking about the dirt...

Thanks Jas, yup white would be nice at first then I'd have to clean it. Maybe an off gray? I'll look at paints today.

Hey how wide is your vinyl that you got? I'm thinking of ordering some soon...

That would have worked... :D I just used PL adhesive in those spots, and will have to go back and sand and get them all down and fill with resin.

We have some property up near Traverse city. Love it up there, and needed to get away. Very close to Lake Michigan and some other great lakes up there.

Thanks Jas! Yeah it sure is awesome up there :D. Really nice to get away.

Going to run out and get a few things in a bit. Need to get sand for the deck, some sandpaper, maybe some more rusto.

I'm thinking of going with maybe this color:
aluminium rusto
PRHpeAluGaL.jpg

or machine gray
PRHpeLmgGaL.jpg

Then either a darker gray vinyl for the sidepanels, or maybe even their navy blue. That is all in the link Jas posted one before this.

Yah, I'm using that Light Machine Gray for my deck. Menards also carries the Dark Machine Gray if you are looking for a darker shade to offset things a little. I think I'll probably use the darker for the insides of my shelves - under the gunwales ya know.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Ok cool I'm thinking I'll pick up a can now and save a trip. They're opening a new Menards that is 14 miles closer to me :D. I'll need to make another trip up for the heck of it, and maybe if I can return my one extra sheet of 2" foam...

For behind the side panels I'm almost thinking of using bedliner, maybe I'll scrape off the glue junk and just paint them. Not sure on that but it's something to think about.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Got back from my trip to get stuff. Got play sand for the texture, and some more sandpaper, and mineral spirits to clean off for painting.

Here's a couple things to think about now. I'm not sure about the play sand texture as of now. I'll do a test run on some scrap tonight, but I'm not sure if the texture will be enough to my likings. I may need to look for some ground up plastic, anyone know of a source for that?

Also neither Lowes or Home Depot had the machine gray rusto... Bummer... I may need to mix up my own batch, or if Menards has it I'll just run up there. I even looked to see if they had a light gray and they didn't just aluminium but I really didn't like the way it looked on the can.

You can use my Islander as a trial if you like. I have decided to leave the glue alone and just paint over it. I am pretending like the leftover glue is a bit of "texture".

I did some tests over the winter with some rubberized stuff, hated it.

I did see some cool paint at Lowes the other day, it was textured paint. I think Valspar makes it?? Looked really good:)

Run some tests with the sand, you may like it. Hey, the price is right;)

I never even thought of that ... I'll come up and do the tests, or you could always run 'um for me :D.

Yeah I had read about you using the rubber stuff. I may look for some smaller plastic, but I'll wait to see how the sand comes out.

As for the paint. I saw that stuff too, I think it is Valspar. Maybe I'll try that!

Running tests as we speak...Sorta:redface:
