smart move getting anyone under shade. to me, this is the single biggest limiter on how much time i can spend on the water. worth spending $ on, and more important than lots of stuff that people buy first.

Look what awaited me on my front door step today when I got home from work!

bimini1.jpg

Now if the weather was not planning to tear our faces off tonight here in MN I might have put it on old "Ledbetter"! Looks like its going to have to be Thursday or so..

Yeah for new boating equipment! Now to find boat seat pedestals, a PDv2 with Co Pilot, a Big Mabo tube, some skii's, some down riggers, some more .... (the list goes on and on!)

*Chuck approaches the turtled almighty 26' hull around which sits the oldest members of the elusive Starmada*

"Forgive me Starmada for I have sinned today." passively Chuck states.

"OH FOR CHRIST SAKES CHUCK! What have you done now!?" hollers the grand pubmada EZMobee.

" I drilled 12 holes IN to my boat tonight for my pure end pleasure..." again, passively Chuck states.

"Well.........does it still FLOAT? hmmmmmm???" rips the longest and bottomest rebuild Jasoutside.

"It sh...sh...should. I had to do it, the Bimini top NEEDED to be mounted!..., forgive me, forgive...me..." Chuck.

"Well, we shall hope it does but for now bring us 3 quarts of gluvit, 2 cans of Rust-o-leum, and the latest printed copy of "Starcraft on C-List" and we shall not beat you with a foam noodle just yet." HA declares!

:)

Mounted the Bimini top tonight. Just got in from doing it, its 1:00am, so pictures will have to wait until tomorrow but I promise to make it up with pictures of it "on the water!" I dont know what it is but drilling holes in a boat hull, even if it was the topside side panels just doesnt seem right. Maybe its the drilling in aluminum, I dont know but I shudder everytime I do it!

Now to have a good afternoon on the water and then its time to mount up the new trolling motor I received for my birthday! This years trip to Lake Winnebigoshish in MN is going to be a fishing dream! NO more firing up the big 85HP just to move 30 feet!

You get a bow mount? I friggin' love mine and it isn't even anything special. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/102_0897-Copy.jpg

Its a transom, tiller mount. With my two boys all over the front of the boat driving their RC boats, etc I wanted it out of the way AND because I enjoy fishing from the back of my boat anyway I chose a transom. 55lb Minnkota Endura C2. Nothing special but will definetly get the job done!

Well, no pics. I HAD TO ORDER A GAL DANG starter this morning as mine has seemingly went caput. I couldnt get the motor started yesterday and I think the starter is the culprit. It would spin and turn the motor over but it was REAL laborious and not much oomph. I read that starters need to produce 250 - 300 rpms in order to get the OB to fire and Im guessing these old johnnies are a beast for the cold start of the day. I did run and get a new battery just to see and it did not help in the least. Lastly, the starter would not dis-engage after turning the motor without assistance so I just decided to go new. I ordered from iboats and should have it tomorrow. Their response is awesome - FYI

One additional note: I checked compression on all four cylinders just because I was leary when the motor wouldnt start and I GOT 30 PSI on all four cylinders ACK :eek::eek:! I read online that going from four good 120 - 125 psi cylinder readings to all four being low and near the same is indicative of a bad compression tester or some other issue. Hopefully the starter is the culprit and the things I read are correct.

One other question that you all may have some insight on: If you turn the motor over by hand with the compression tester on it, should you get a good reading or will it be low compared to firing it with the starter?

I did readings with hand turning it and got the 30 marks and I am wondering if that is part of the issue...

Oh BOATS, why are you so much fun but hurt SO bad when things arent right! :(

You need to really spin it to get comp readings. Your starter does sound pooched so I'm sure you'll be good when the new one is on.

Hi CND, wow just read over your thread really like the SS beautiful boat. The color scheme is awesome I didn't think the yellow would look that great but yours is amazing. sorry to read about the "ouch-board issue, hopefully its just a starter issue. The pics are great!!

i'm surprised you even got 30psi turning it over by hand. as EZ said, retest once new starter is on. and be sure throttle is fully open, and don't forget to correct your raw #s to sea level if needed

Whew! Starter it was! Took me about 1 hour to uninstall and reinstall the starter. Hooked up the water, turned it on (Key part there) and she fired right off!! Let me tell ya too, it was night and day difference between the weak old starter and the new one. I can now recall how much it struggled all year last year, this new one really really cranks it over!!

If anyone else is having intermitten starting problems and has tried a brand new LARGE battery and the starting labors and labors then I'd recomend pulling your starter, bringing it in and having it tested.

SUCH a wonderful sound when they run! Tested the compression after she ran and its at 122 - 120 - 120 - 120. PERFECT! You guys were right, you really need to spin it to get a good readin.

So now, to celebrate, Im getting off work early tomorrow, having our basement plumbing, framing, and mechanical inspection (900 square feet of remodel) and then were heading out to the lake!

Oh, one other thing... iboats parts and their shipping speed is INCREDIBLE!

I am doing most of mine myself. We are adding a bathroom (full tub & shower, dual sinks and porcelain chair), bedroom, activity room, fireplace, bar and kitchenette, and storage. THe only thing I have had paid to do is move gas lines to move the water heater and THAT ALONE cost me $1200.00 ACK!

If it passes insepction tomorrow then we move on to electrical.... been 3 years in the making (down side of doing it yourself).

Im going to try and get the inspector in and out in RECORD time! Gal darn it, when I scheduled him the boat wasnt running but now it is, ITS LAKE TIME!

I'm doing mine mostly myself. I did a Barricade subfloor, and I have the framing about 80% completed. Once the HVAC is done I can frame around the ducts. Then I'll run the electrical and insulate. I'm really hoping to hire out the drywall but we'll see that the cost is. I'll definitely hire out the drywall finishing. No bathroom or anything fancy in mine, it's just going to be a family room.

Awesome! Most days I wish I had just bought a house with three bedrooms! :) I'll probably hire the drywall finishing out too, that stuff is HARD to not have it crack on you later!!

Good news on the starter, I've had problems with starters on a pair of 150 hp Force...had them rebuilt here in town and that solved the dragging issue.

Re: 1979 16' Starcraft SS - I did it again!

Went to Mille Lacs Lake in Isle MN this past weekend with a couple of buddys, some good beers, and fished it hard! We spent 10 hours+ a day on the lake Friday and Saturday and put in over 20 hours fishing! Came up with 25 walleyes caught and 1 jumbo perch. Out of the 26 fish only the perch and 1, that's right, 1 stinkin' Walleye was kept! The slot on the lake is nothing between 17" and 28" can be kept and we had 2 at 28" and 2 at 18" and everything else in between. Still, catching big fish is SO MUCH FUN! I have never caught the size Walleye we caught this weekend, it was unreal! We caught them on leeches, Lindy rigs and drifting rock piles and mud/sand flats with a drift sock at about .6 mph. I thought I'd throw up some of the catches for fun! FYI Im the guy in the UMD yellow shirt or the Coors hat. My buds are the other two fellas.

Great photos. Looks and sounds like a great fishing weekend. I picked up one of those Bimini Tops as well. It will be a nice addition with the heat on its way. I too have an 85hp and have admittedly enjoyed the extra power with a full load.

Jason - Yeah it was an unbelieveable weekend!! Its was 88 degrees and winds around 13mph gusting to 20mph so we got beat on all day by the waves but when your pulling in, on average, fish that are 20 inches or longer you quickly forget how much your rolling around!

Great photos. Looks and sounds like a great fishing weekend. I picked up one of those Bimini Tops as well. It will be a nice addition with the heat on its way. I too have an 85hp and have admittedly enjoyed the extra power with a full load.

The 85HP was absolutely a help when we had to go out the 3 mile initial run from the dock / camp ground or when we got done with a drift and had to reset or move to a new location. Getting the boat to get up and over the waves was helped with the 85HP. Yeah a smaller HP'ed engine would of done it but I felt like the 85HP was using it all to keep us going at a speed that did not bang the rivets out yet did not take us 45+ minutes to go the 3 miles!

The Bimini top was essential to saving the skin / body! The first day we kept it down for most of it and were burnt to a crisp by about 4pm. Threw it up then and all day Saturday and it saved us! It does make fishing a bit more tricky around the poles and such (except for the guy in the front and guy in the back) but in this case we were drift trolling so there was little casting. If we had been or if I do cast fish for eye's or bass then the top will not likely make it up with 3+ people fishing. With that many it just gets in the way or will get in the way.
