Re: 1979 Imperial

I just picked up 50 24 grit resin discs on ebay for 32 bucks! Seems like everyone likes them alot better than the flappers. That's alot of dust my friend! Thank goodness for respirators! I was thinking, you said you burned through a fan already. Are you just running a filter on one side? Maybe if you run one on both it wouldn't kill the motor so fast. Just a thought.

I have never seen those resin discs. They look like they could lop off a finger in a hurry. Seeing all that grinding dust really brings back memories.

Hey Bear, you are surely giving it heck, and sad to say keep them tools of destruction around as you are never truly done with them until the paint goes down... I used to sweep all my dust up and dump it in a garbage bag when i was done then i would turn the hose on theboat and myselft to get rid of the dust. but that was warmer times. it is amazing how much that garbage bag weighed with nothign but dust in it from the boat snow days... KEEP it up buddy.

Hey bear, I just read your thread front to back and the sides of my fingers are itching just thinking about all that dust. My God I hate fiberglass.

Nice progress though. It's always disheartening to see a boat go from water ready to "look at this ROT"!

Re: 1979 Imperial

I am reading that resin disks are the way to go. I have found some at Harbor Freight that are 5". Can you use them on a 4.5" grinder? I am assuming I would need a backing plate also correct??

Thanks

I used the HF 5" on my 4.5" Skill grinder, of course I removed the safety guard though. Works fine, but be careful!

Only 10% to go and no more dusty doom ........ great job bear!

Thanks for the encouragement brutha!

I am not a big fan of better living through chemistry, but I can tell you that a little benedryl goes along way in keeping a good dog a down......... Our dog, Majic, twisted a 'knee' at a Las Vegas dog park. His hind leg was bandaged up like a chicken wing, and the vet suggested a whole benedryl 2X/day 1 am & 1 pm. He was 75+lbs & 3.5yrs old at that point. We went from 4-5 2hr+ dog park visits a week to none for 6wks. And only short walks for quite awhile after his leg was unwrapped. He'd have been bonkers when I got home from work w/out the benedryl. Check w/ JL's vet 1st, esp if he's on anti-inflammation/infection drugs.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program: Tear down & pending put back of a 1979 Imperial:

The work up to now looks really good. Nice job, & JL will certainly help you adjust to your new solo status. The yellow certainly gets my vote...... Looking forward to seeing you get the stringers back in & under a deck!:)

We'll send good thoughts JL's way til he's 100% again

Thanks brutha, I'll look into the benadryl and speak with my vet... He's currently on anti-inflammatories. I'm keeping the Yellow, and JL is a great companion for flying solo... Thanks again for checkin my progress!

Your gonna love the 24 grit! Cuts glass like butter as WOG said. I think the fans toasted because the airflow was so limited when the filter was full... And I mean full! Hey I'm gonna post but noticed your new boat! Awesome man!

Good times Jay! The resin discs will work great on your next boat! :D Thanks for poppin in brutha!

Thanks for checkin my build rrumba, I know it's not the real end with grinding until the boat hits the water, but the worse part is nearly over! Incredible how much glass dust there is! Peace dude!

Hey man,

Thanks for tuning in to DOOM and itch central... I intended to modify the boat from the get-go... But now I can make it exactly how I want things configured. I was amazed to find the extent of rot with such a clean looking boat...

Yep, I have the guards off also... I have a healthy respect for grinders! Hope you finger has healed up brutha! I saw that post a few weeks before I started...

I don't mean this to be offensive in any way bear, but I guess this illustrates why "test holes" can be grossly misleading. FWIW I wish I could do a complete restore. My personal deadline was Jan 29th, my birthday, to get my restore thread started.

And I'm keeping the boat and selling the car too. 1964 Dodge Polara, 440 on methanol (GASP) 727 reverse manual valve body w/ trans lock, Dana 60 4:88 w/ 4 link, 50+gal methanol, fuel jugs, trailer, fire suit and helmet. 7.1XX in the 1/8 ~94mph. She lifts three wheels in the air at launch, yes I said three. Turn key. Just sayin'.

My Mopar brethren! No offence taken at all, I think I mentioned early on, I hoped my build could be a lesson in just cuz it looks good on the outside, doesn't mean it's sound on the inside....

So you missed the deadline? You still have 2 days!!!! Happy Birthday early!!! whats the status of your restoration?

Ummmmmmm... That sounds like one mean Polara... Any pics? :)

I do miss the 'Cuda, but the 454 in the Cobalt takes the pain away quickly.... :D

Re: 1979 Imperial

I hope to take some pics this weekend and the boat is blocking the car so I'll fit that in too. As for the restore thread...well...it'll come sooner or later....more later than sooner. There'$ been a few thing$ holding u$ back.....

One of our racing team members has a 67 'Cuda too. Came straight from the factory assembly line to Mr. Norm. No bull**** either. He showed the pictures to Herb McCandless and he verified it himself. If I hadn't been standing there I wouldn't have believed it. It never was a Sox and Martin car but it did win the SS/A (SS/AA???) 1968 NHRA Winternationals. Nice ride. One of these days I'll get to drive it. One of these days....

Congrats on getting past suck-fest. You will revisit the grinder again from time to time, but nothing like this... Have a good rest and enjoy the accomplishment....

Re: 1979 Imperial

Congrats bro! Now you will find that the real itch begins when you go in/ near the boat without protection. I know I did. Keep finding light dust in places I wouldnt expect to.

That hull looks mighty clean to me though.

No surprise that bear would have done pretty much the best clean-out job I've seen to date. Nice work.
