Re: 1979 Imperial

Sorry you had to let her go...Nothing wrong at all with simplifying your life a little bit.

Look forward to seeing the Imperial come together. I know that you will enjoy getting back to the basics with a nice fishing rig.

Hang in there.

Makes complete sense Bear. I wouldn't know what to do with a boat that size minus a gaggle of people every time anyway. When I was 22 I bought the car I really wanted when I was 16. I quickly realized that it wasn't at all what I wanted anymore. Got rid of it pretty quickly. The Imperial will fish great especially when you're done with it!

A guy and a fishing boat and mans best friend aka JL . Sounds like a great plan! Your gunna love the tri hull for fishing. We fish out of glassmaster very similar to yours . I wouldn't go off shore with it but it's great for the creeks and river down here It's a very stable boat..
See ya S.P.

Re: 1979 Imperial

Hey gang,

Thanks for the kind words and support! It's all good....

I'm ready to get back cranking on the Imperial... My goal is to Splash by mid September, as I have a fishing trip planed the week of 22Sept! I should have my paint by Friday, so I hope to get the keel repair and maybe the bottom painted or at least prepped this weekend? We'll see after the Cobalt transaction is all finished Saturday...

I'm thinking a 8" layer of 1.5 oz CSM then 6" of 1708, followed by a 8" layer of 1708, all wet lay-ups... I really feel a layer of CSM between the two layers of 1708 is overkill... Please feel free to convince me

New to this thread but I feel compelled to convince you otherwise.
CSM is not used with epoxy. The binders in CSM do not dissolve with epoxy. CSM does not add strength. It does waste epoxy which adds weight.
The 1708 is the proper product. It does have CSM attached to it but it does not have the binder, rather it is stitched with thread, hence the name stitch mat. The only reason for the CSM on the stitch mat is so it retains it shape a little better.

You're doing a great job!

JLII will be ready before you know it and you will Cobalt what? who?

I bet it was tough to see her go though, was a nice looking boat.

I have meant to ask...how did you get that pic you had in Sig? Looked like you went swimming in the middle of the lake with a camera...and no one was on board...

I do hope they left you with a nice fat check though. I'm sure that helps ease the pain a bit;)

Re: 1979 Imperial

Hey gang,

I managed to finally get some glassing done!

I ground back 4" surrounding the keel damage. I laid two small 1.5 oz CSM patches over holes in keel, followed by two layers CSM, one layer of 1708, and finished by two final layers of CSM. Each layer is ~ 1" wider than the previous. I'm happy with it! I filled the small dings in the gelcoat using resin thickened with glass micro beads. Next I'll be sanding / faring, and prepping the bottom for paint as I mentioned a few posts back. Feels good to be glassin! I'll have the hull flipped and be working on stringers/deck very soon...

Peace!

Nice work, Bear.

Is that going to be a stock color gelcoat, or do you think you will have to mix something?
