Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

here is a link

http://uscomposites.com/epoxy.html

They are in Florida and did not take long for me to get it but i am in GA so i was not that far anyway, usually 1 day ground, not sure where you are at. I would think you would want the medium one. you can also call them and they will put you on the best choice for what you are doing. the slow one is for colder weather.

hope this helps.

You don't really want to go that route.

Guys if you have read his entire thread he is on a budget with his restore. He works at walmart so he gets a discount on purchases there so what is wrong with doing what I proposed in post 194? It will do the exact same thing as the epoxy resin plus it will be easier for him to work with considering im assuming this will be his first time using resin and fiberglass. In all for $45 or 50 bucks he can have this completed.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

He asked about epoxy so that's why I posted up the info for him.

I have no idea how to glass so I'm of no help there.

What I do know is there is a learning curve with glassen.

On a budget?

Well, in that case I'd go for porch and floor paint and/or Spar Varnish.

Also if he doesn't mind replacing the piece of wood every year or two why can't he just paint it with an epoxy based paint or an oil base and just soak the **** out of it with that. Cheaper now you would just have to keep an eye on it if it starts to rot or get water logged replace it and do it again if its been a while or go a different route. If im correct the wood isn't a structural component.

If you use Oil Based Paint and thin the first coat 25% with Acetone and Really coat the edges of the plywood heavily with the paint and then follow up with two coats of full strength paint, with proper maintenance and if you keep it covered in the off season, it will last 5 years or more.

I got acetone and hardner left and an unused can of metal primer left, i was going to use metal primer on the wood real good then, a coat of paint or two, would that be good enough? i do plan on covering it up

I wouldnt bother glassin either.....that piece isnt structural but epoxy would give the best protection.....if you are on a budget go with woods approach.

I wouldn't use the metal primer as it will keep the thinned paint (as WOG suggested) from penetrating deep into the wood. They use primer on wood to seal it up and keep the wood from drinking the paint, you want the wood to drink the paint for your application.

JP - check on Spar Varnish prices at work. It seals the wood and is better than porch paint. It will get you through a few seasons. For the piece on the transom - see if the store has a large poly cutting board. Check what Huron Angler did with one of those for his transom.

What do you all plan on coating with epoxy? A quart isn't very much. I would say if only using 2 coats on everything you could probably do it all with a gallon or a gallon and a half.

Epoxy usage varies greatly depending on application method and the thirstiness of the wood but I used 3 gallons on my deck! So I did kinda LOL when I read you bought a quart :p

(come on jpormen, ditch the stupid transom plate. you know you want to)

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

BIG UPDATE!!!!!!!!

First off i ordered a QT of epoxy from us composites on Tuesday, Thursday i had not received any email or anything from them and the money wasn't taken out of my account, when i called them to see what the deal was, they were very rude to me and could not find my order. Very poor costumer service received so i told them to not charge me and if they find it to cancel my order. So i went with a product from wal-mart and got all my wood sealed!

I also got my back transom plate sealed, painted and installed, also use cauking around it to seal between boat and board also cauked around the bolts on the inside of the boat from the wooden plate.

Got the foam in, which was a pain seeing how it was almost 90 outside today, got the floor installed and screwed down. Cauked the seams of it. Also got the front seats put back in. Will continue working on the interior until i can get some people over to help me and my dad put the motor back on the boat!!!! Then will come to the real truth if it runs or not.
