Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY
Up until this point all the work going into the boat has been maintaining and refinishing. After a long discussion it was decided we needed to start really tearing into the boat. It has become apparent that our style of boating does not require as much storage as this boat offers. The larger areas tend to gather a lot of "junk". With that in mind the wheels were set in motion to change that. Contrary to what most boaters would probably do, we tore apart the large run of cabinets along the starboard salon. The face frames are nice teak, and will be reused. The goal is a redo that looks factory, and adds a bit if room to the salon.
Some quick measuring gave us an additional 12" in width and 63" in length. Not a huge amount, but to be honest, it opens the salon up a HUGE amount. The new barrell chair was right in the door opening. After the change it will be 100% behind the bulkhead. Giving 12" more of walking space is tremendous in a boat.
We will see what the storage situation is like with this bank of cabinets out. If it proves to be an issue, we may rebuild a cabinet in the entry corner, but I don't see this happening.
I would love to hear your thoughts. Crazy? Stupid? Ingenious? Let me know what you think.
Layout and quick sketch.
How it looked:
After the cabinet was removed. The counter will go from the wire chase back as well. The close chair is back against the wall (will be mahogany veneered and varnished) and can actually be sat in at that position. The chase will be the new end of the cabinet. The chase walls are being varnished as I type. The counter will be returned back at this chase as well. New carpet will be installed.
