I see you're using Rotella T 15W-40. thats a great oil. We use/sell more of it than Quicksilver oil. I also see some startron there too! We have done our own in-house fuel comparisons with the startron fuel additive and see the difference in the tests like night and day. Stuff works great.

Yes Rotella and startron. Always worked well on the other boat.

All the interior wood will most likely get a final coat of Varnish. Right now it's Interlux Schooner 96, as they didn't have the Epiphanes when I was there to purchase it. I prefer the Epiphanes, but the Interlux works well also.

Whats up man. Must be nice having all that room to work "in" the boat. ;) Maybe I need to step up,lol Woodwork looks great, think you made the right choice on the new veneer. If I was following along like I should have been I could have told you contact adhesive is the way to go. You can also apply that with a roller which might save you from having to do two coats. The non flamable sometimes takes two coats though.

My favorite parts are still the swim platform and the head area. Love love love all the woodwork. Great job man! :)

Nice color selection on the carpet tooo, thats just gonna bring out all that beautiful woodwork even more.

Slow progress. Got the first door in the boat.

Got about half done. Still have a lot to go, but getting there. The head got cleaned and ready for the season. Don't mind the messy hull liner, needs a cleaning. The carpet will get redone.

Looks good.Is there anyway to allow air flow into the cabinets to prevent moister build up from humidity?I noticed on some boats, that I have worked on, that water damage comes from condensation inside enclosed areas.

I'm sure there are ways to create airflow into a cabinet space. I've never noticed any condensation or water damage from inside a cabinet on either of my boats.

I took another wing piece home (from the galley). Also ripped off the nasty wallpaper and gold piece the owner added along the top of the teak trim around the windows.

Went to the boat today and spent a few hours on the wood.

Sanded the salon cabinets:

also prepped the head wall for whatever finish I apply. Either wallpaper, veneer or laminate, I'm unsure:

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

Up until this point all the work going into the boat has been maintaining and refinishing. After a long discussion it was decided we needed to start really tearing into the boat. It has become apparent that our style of boating does not require as much storage as this boat offers. The larger areas tend to gather a lot of "junk". With that in mind the wheels were set in motion to change that. Contrary to what most boaters would probably do, we tore apart the large run of cabinets along the starboard salon. The face frames are nice teak, and will be reused. The goal is a redo that looks factory, and adds a bit if room to the salon.

Some quick measuring gave us an additional 12" in width and 63" in length. Not a huge amount, but to be honest, it opens the salon up a HUGE amount. The new barrell chair was right in the door opening. After the change it will be 100% behind the bulkhead. Giving 12" more of walking space is tremendous in a boat.

We will see what the storage situation is like with this bank of cabinets out. If it proves to be an issue, we may rebuild a cabinet in the entry corner, but I don't see this happening.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Crazy? Stupid? Ingenious? Let me know what you think.

Layout and quick sketch.

How it looked:
image-9.jpg

After the cabinet was removed. The counter will go from the wire chase back as well. The close chair is back against the wall (will be mahogany veneered and varnished) and can actually be sat in at that position. The chase will be the new end of the cabinet. The chase walls are being varnished as I type. The counter will be returned back at this chase as well. New carpet will be installed.

The real test is to make it look factory. I don't like when people do homeowner the renovations on boats. The plan is to reuse existing wood, and incorporate some new teak and mahogany to finish up some now exposed areas.

I think it sounds like a great idea. Like you said, 12" is HUGE on a boat. I have no doubt you can make it look good.
