Nice transom work! Good luck with the installation.

As for your scientific work... well, I hope you haven't quit your day job.... :D

Seriously, good luck putting in transom.

Re: 1999 Celebrity 190 - Engine Mount and Stringer Repair

Transom went in tonight, I'd say it went fairly well. Will be able to get a better look at it tomorrow evening when the clamping comes off, but early measurements have me sitting at a thickness just shy of 2" all around the keyhole which is exactly where I wanted to end up tonight. Threre is no glass on the engine side of the transom yet, so with 2 layers of 1708 and a final layer of CSM, should be ending up just above 2-1/8" overall. Mixed two 3L batches of PB for a total of 6L resin, 6L cabosil, and 500ml of chopped strand. Using the mortar mixer and 2 gallon pails (picture in post #150) made mixing everything up all at once a total breeze. I catalyzed at 1% MEKP which gave me plenty of time to work with it. Will post pics tomorrow.

Here are some pics from last night.

Cleaned up the edges, then marked a grid for drilling 1/2" holes for oozing out PB, as per WOG's recommendations. After marking all the holes, it looked like overkill on the qty, so I only ended up drilling every second hole or so.

Got two batches ready to be mixed up. 3L of resin, 3L cabosil, 250ml (1 cup) chopped fibers, and 30ml MEKP, per batch.

Applied PB to skin, and new transom plywood using a notched trowel.

Pictures of the clamping, after all the oozed out PB was cleaned up. Didn't get a lot of filleting done, only what I could effectively get at around the clamping. Not alot oozed out, I made sure I clamped enough to get PB coming out of the 1/2" holes, and all around the keyhole, and around most of the edges, then stopped clamping when I was happy with the thickness around the keyhole. A few of the 1/2" holes at the top didn't get PB actually coming out of the holes, but using a flashlight I was able to see that it was starting to come through, so I'm hoping it will be ok. I suspect there may be a couple of small voids, but all in all I think it went good.

Not too much to report tonight. Removed the clamping, cleaned up the keyhole, then used the 1/2" flush cut router bit to finish it off. Because the router bit is 1" long, needed to do two passes around the keyhole. All in all it turned out really well. Just need to sand it down to get a smooth surface. Here are some pics.

The exciting part is checking the measurements and flatness. On the inside, centre section around the keyhole is dead flat. Thickness around the keyhole was relatively consistent, a minimum of 1-7/8", and a maximum of 1-15/16". On the outside, I have a slight bow around the keyhole, when putting a straight edge from top to bottom. From side to side everything is extremely flat. From top to bottom, I have an approximate 3/64" gap in the middle of the keyhole (the gap is somewhere between 1/32" and 1/16", hard to tell without feeler gauges). I can't remember for sure, but what is the tolerance for this? 1/16" comes to mind? See pics (yes, the edge I used is straight, I didn't have a straight edge 19" long, all were more than 24", so I used a verified straight strip of maple).

Hi BV,
First off I have to say you are doing a magnificent job restoring this Celebrity.
Everything you have accomplished so far and in such a short period of time has turned out absolutely exceptional.
Your craftsmanship and attention to detail are top notch...
I had missed your rebuild before, but I am glad you stopped by my haunt...made me search for your thread link...
I have just finished reading through and can only ask to be allowed to come aboard and watch as this nice boat gets a second, longer and happier lease on life...
I can't really add to your transom tolerance question, as I am an O/B guy, but from the looks of it, I would venture a guess and say you are pretty much spot on.
I wanted to add a bit of personal info regarding one of your questions early on about how much prep already laid glass will need, if it sits for more than a day or 3 before adding more laminations...
My own experience has shown me that if the glass becomes sticky and tacky after wiping down with acetone, the surface is still going to provide adequate adhesion with any new layers...I do tend to run a D/A over areas that have nubs or hairs on them since they will prevent the glass from laying down...another indicator that the glass is not fully surface cured and able to be laminated to, is the sand paper will get gummed up pretty quickly...
If it has sat for more than say, 5+ days, I would take the precaution of going over the entire area and doing a quick rough and scuff...
Hey, keep up the great work and best of luck.
Have Fun!

Very nice. :thumb:

curious about your plans to seal the wood edges around the keyhole. IMO that is something that boat manufacturers do not do a good enough job on.

Looks good to me, but I'd definitely recommend surfing thru some of the Merc I/O threads to check the specs for flatness. Is 3/64" +/- flat, no, but is it flat enough, IDK. For sure someone over in the engine forum would know.

Nice job w/ the router too. Just make sure you cut the steering arm notch before you start sealing up the exposed edges at the keyhole. You'll want to seal the notch too.

@ GT1KK

Thank you so much for the kind words! Most definitely, hop on aboard! Looking forward to more tips! With my resto, I'm just trying to do my best to emulate the good work I see on the iboats forum, yours included!

@ Ted

Thanks! I am wondering the same thing about sealing up the keyhole. If I had to guess, I think the original was just sealed up with resin then with gelcoat. I don't think there is any room for a layer of CSM, but once I do a test fit with the outdrive I'll be able to see. 'll be looking for suggestions!

@ Glenn

Thanks you sir!

@ jbcurt00

Good tip, I'll post the flatness question in the Merc I/O forum. That's a good point about the steering arm cutout, I had never though about the order of things but it makes sense to cut them out first before sealing everything up. Thanks!

Re: 1999 Celebrity 190 - Engine Mount and Stringer Repair

Looking good! Right or wrong, I sealed the exposed wood on my keyhole with resin, mixed to cure slowly so it had plenty of time to penetrate the wood.

When I was doing my boat last year, I remember reading about someone who had trouble with waviness in the outer skin of his transom. This person had NOT used a plywood shield on the outside of the transom, as you did (and I did, too) and the clamps had left depressions and unevenness in the hull around the keyhole. There was lots of good info about tolerances for the flatness of that surface that came out in that thread. I've not had luck yet locating that thread, but I'll keep looking and see if I can find it for you.

I mention it because you're not the first to encounter this... and I don't think your deviation from flatness is that severe, if I'm remembering this correctly. I'll post the link if I can find that thread...

Re: 1999 Celebrity 190 - Engine Mount and Stringer Repair

I wanted to announce a new addition to the iBoats clan!

My wife and I have been expecting for some time, and on Friday night she went into labour one week early. She gave birth at 5:59AM Saturday morning to a beautiful healthy girl, Sydney Francis Vetter, at 8lbs 5oz. Everyone is doing well, so we were able to come home this morning. Her 2-1/2 year old big sister Emery couldn't be more excited!

Have a great week everyone!

Congrats! Glad all are doing well & are home recuperating from an eventful weekend.:

Remind her of this:
Her 2-1/2 year old big sister Emery couldn't be more excited!
The first time you ask her to watch her little sister while you & the Admiral go out for dinner ;)
