Re: 22' bluefin rebuild with some pics

today i got my front stringer in.
IMAG0385.jpg

installed the new cradle i made and set the gas tank in it
IMAG0386.jpg

then i put my stringers down. it kinda looks goofy with the middle stringer in there, but it was free and i figured a little extra support couldnt hurt!

Re: 22' bluefin rebuild with some pics

heres a pic of what the fuel tank use to set in. plywood and water/moisture dont usually have the greatest end result!
IMAG0352.jpg

For the new one, i used a 1" insulated panel that is usually used in commercial glazing. It is foam sandwiched in aluminum.
IMAG0290.jpg

After cutting it to fit, i caulked all of the edges to prevent and wicking of moisture into the foam. Kind of like sealing the ends on a piece of plywood!
IMAG0291.jpg

I ended up drilling random 1/2" holes and then filling them full of caulking. After giving it plenty of time to cure, I drilled the holes out with a 1/4" bit. This way, if i take a big wave or something and water gets to it, it can drain through and not just lay there. I dont think this will ever happen, but better to be prepared i guess!

Re: 22' bluefin rebuild with some pics

spent yesterday at a field trip with my son, then hit up some stores on the way home for some boat supplies! I have an idea for a drain, which i got a good deal on, picked up a quart of the spar varnish that i needed, got another box of noodles ( im up to 100 now!) some sandpaper, and a steal on some composite decking! More to come.....

Re: 22' bluefin rebuild with some pics

Well its been a little while, but i have managed to get a few things accomplished. I ran a conduit chase for my fuel line in case i ever need to switch it out, started cutting up some foam and laying it down.
IMAG0424.jpg

This is how far i got with the free foam ive been getting from jobsites and dumpster diving lol
IMAG0426.jpg

Ive been waiting on some material for awhile, so i decided i might as well get started on cutting some decking and fitting it in
IMAG0427.jpg

Please stop me if you see anything wrong here, I used a 2 part epoxy to seal the ends of my decking, 2 coats. Then on the top side, i put down 3 coats of rustoleum spar varnish. I intend on sanding this down some and putting a few coats of ext porch paint on it.
On the underside, does it make sense to use 1 coat of spar and 1-2 coats of the porch paint? Or should I use the same amount of protection as I did on top?
IMAG0432.jpg

Seems a shame to cover this up:D

You have done well getting that fuel tank up on the bow side, not the easiest thing to figure:)

I think your plywood seal up sounds aok;)

Nice work on that big ole girl. From what I've seen from others here you get more bang for the buck and better flotation using the pink or blue foam and not noodles.

Re: 22' bluefin rebuild with some pics

Thanks guys, oh and osby, there might be a few a few noodles finding there way in there!:D
Heres where im at now.
couple layers of paint, one with the grain and one against it
IMAG0434.jpg

Put some brackets down to hold my joist/stringer. I had some 2x2 alum angle @.065 to use for this, but had to shear 1/2" off for it to work

Everything im putting down, im using a 1/16" rubber tape, (kinda like a butyl tape but not sticky) to help reduce noise and make sure there isnt any metal on metal connections. An ounce of prevention is my thinking on this. Im even putting down pieces of the tape for my tube to sit on before i fasten it.

Im using rivots and some caulking for extra holding power for my tube. I figured by using a 1.5"x1.5" alum tube, it would have amazing strength and could also be used a chace for drainage hose if i ever decided to turn front storage into livewells.

IMAG0440.jpg

Oh and a 3rd coat!
IMAG0438.jpg

Its alot of fun doing this, Im anxious to get it done, but at the same time, working on it is pretty cool! If anybody sees any red flags with what im doing, please speak up, i wanna know what im screwing up lol! Thanks!

Looks nice. Are you thinking of adding any non slip to the painted floor? Or did I miss carpet or vinyl.

well the floor and porch paint im using has some silica mixed in for non slip. I went that direction so i can maybe get on the water a little sooner, and then cover up the decking later. Maybe it will work that way, maybe not but it was the same price as the regular paint so.....
This is a design build project, so i have ideas flowing, but it doesnt always pan out:D Im leaning towards nautilex vinyl for most of the deck, but there will be some carpeted areas on the sides of gunwale and whatnot.

I could have crammed several more in there, but I remember reading somewhere on here thats its not a good idea to compact them to tight!

Re: 22' bluefin rebuild with some pics

Got a few storage compartments figured out and installed. I used the same alum panel as under the fuel tank foor the flooring in it. Im waiting on a buddy of mine for a few old road signs to complete the bottom of the front compartments.
IMAG0443.jpg

I got lucky and a full 2" board fit underneath it all!
IMAG0444.jpg

Add a few noodles to fill up the void
IMAG0445.jpg

bottom installed. cut it a little short on the ends so if water were to get in, it had plenty off room to get out!
IMAG0446.jpg

both sides done! sorry for the mess, it was beer thirty by that time!

got alittle bit accomplished today. Made template and got some cut out for the deck. I didnt figure enough wood, so i gotta make a run to menards in the morning. Good thing is that a buddy of mine has a few old road signs i can use in the bottom of some storage compartments!

After fitting this in, it hit me that i need to have my carpet on the gunwales before installing the deck:facepalm: Glad i caught it before too much work was done, but i wasnt pleased with myself for not thinking that far in advance!

Re: 22' bluefin rebuild with some pics

Okay, I'm at a dilemma! The more I think about it, I'm leaning towards wrapping my decking with nautilex vinyl before installing. Originally, I was going to put my deck down , then cover it later on. What are you guys thoughts on this?

If you ever need to get under the floor for anything it is easier to remove wrapped panels than a whole floor,....

You got that right!

I would never cover my deck fasteners with my deck finish!

When Murphy comes to town he'll laugh his nards off as you're ripping up your nice new vinyl to fix something below deck if you cover your fasteners.

Exposed fasteners can actually be attractive and add to the look of your boat if they're evenly spaced and line up in nice neat rows.

yea, thats one of the biggest reasons im leaning that way. That and if any vinyl were to get damaged ( i have 3 boys:D) Im thinking it would be easier to repair by taking a panel out, rather than a patchjob!

Re: 22' bluefin rebuild with some pics

I ordered some carpet yesterday, and the guy that installs it uses this kind of glue. Has anybody ever heard of or used it?
IMAG0453.jpg

I have to check into it, i wanna be sure itll stick to the alum on my gunwales. Im looking forward to getting the carpet in, but at the same time im a little nervous because ive never done it and dont really wanna screw up a couple hundred bucks worth of carpet:eek:
