I have to get pics up. If I don't, the whole thing will feel kind of...I don't know, wrong or something. Besides, if I don't get pics up, you guys aren't going to see all of the stuff that I do wrong only to learn the right way the second time. Oh yeah, now who do I send the dues to? BTW, I just picked up my new fancy rivet tool. The guy at the counter asked me what I was doing and I told him I was putting my boat back together. He said, you're doing what. This sure is going to be fun.

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

Floyd-Send the dues to me:D

i'll pm you on the taco stuff. And I didn't have any issues with the rivets on top. Yours is newer and may be constructed a tad different. As far as the bolts for the rubrail-I'd just take one to fastenal and get a bazillion of them to match. As far as questions, fire away, I'll help if I can!

We did shakeout run # 3 today and all is well. I switched to a 21 pitch prop and although my speed didn't go up much we did get the rpms up to 4000 which is a little more like it. I can barely read the markings on the loaner prop but it is considerably smaller than my 14 1/4 x 19 so I ordered a quick ship 14 1/4 x 21 from iboats and I think that will do it.

Engine is running smooth as silk since the carb rebuild and I've even got the cursed shifter working properly thanks to Appaloosa.

Now we're loading everything for two weeks at the lake house and life is good:D:D

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

Thanks for the info NB. I am glad that the third time was the charm for you. I haven't really put much time into the outboard on mine yet, it was running, shifting and spewing water in Dec so with a little luck when I get it back on a new transom it will check out OK. I'll try to keep the questions to fewer than 20 or so a day:D!

NB, did I hear that you are going to Smith Mt. Lake? I am actually in Rke about 35 minutes from the lake. This is where we will spend most of out time once the rebuild is complete. Make sure and bring your fishing gear, there are still a lot of Stripers being picked up in the early mornings.

I'll keep an eye out for you. I don't think we will be around Huddleston late in the day but you never know. Hope you have a great trip and good luck fishing. I talked to another friend today and they have caught fish all week in the early AM.

Stripers? and any way you could breifly state the proceedure? I've never fished lake stripers before and I understand they're deep!

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

Most of the stripers in the lake are caught near the surface. In the AM and PM they are breaking water after shad. The structue in many of the coves is excellent for activity at these times. Throwing artificials catches most of them. Most of the time we see where the activity has been and cruise the coves looking for shad on top....start casting. They do migrate as you know so sometimes it is here one day and gone the next. My buddy has been catching them off and on in his cove the last three weeks. I would hook you up with him but he is in Guatemala right now.

Wherever you put in, talk to the local shops. Most folks are willing to give info about recent bites. You can still run into jerks every now and then though. I have to tell you it is nice to know that there is someone else that enjoys fly fishing for big fish. I go for stripers, blues and drum regularly with my fly rod. Nothing like a bent pole in a crowd. Good Luck.

Oh yeah, clouser minnows and similar work well in the lake.

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

Thanks again Bud! I'm rigged with all those striper streamers from fishing the breaking fish in the bay. I wasn't really excited thinking all the stripers were deep fish in the lake, but after talking with you I feel like I'm gonna be in my element. I'd rather top water fly fish than anything. Trolling to me is boring and I couldn't live bait fish if I had to:D

The only reason to live bait fish is to give you something to do between naps. Throwing things at the breaking water is the way to go.

Thanks Guys!

NB,
What a fantastic job you did with your boat. You did exactly what I have been trying to envision for my boat for some time now. Your pics and documentation on how you acheived the build was top-notch. Congrats and well done!!!!

I have a '66 18' Holiday O\B and I have been thinking about my pending restoration and wanting to keep the classic look. I have been going back and forth with original (or some sort of) color schemes and seat layouts. My Holiday is seafoam green so I was thinking some sort of light silver and a darker seafoam. I also thought about wood instead of the vinyl covered walls, dash, and spashwell doors. I though the wood would look "too highbrow" for a fish\ski boat but seeing your use of wood really set the boat apart from the norm. Fantastic.

I only hope I can restore my boat to the level that you have acheived. You have definately raised the bar.

Again, thanks for "seeing" for me!!!!!!
