Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

We took ours out sitting on lawn chairs on a rotten deck to make sure we were happy with it before I invested in the interior materials. When I punched it my dad fell out of his lawn chair so we decided it was a runner.

well, thats because your smart!;)

Could've named her the S.S. "Hold On!":p (like the old Navy saying "one hand for you...one for the boat")

Sorry to hear folks are having mechanical difficulties...here's to hoping for good compression, water pumps cooling, no overheating and good spark;)

Seriously...good luck getting the SC's on the water NB and Andy, after all the hard work you guys deserve nothing less than WOT cruising the rest of the summer:)

NB, it's a curse. I have a brand new Yami F150 sitting in storage yet I will not give up on the stupid Mariner 100. I just finished tearing it all the way down and rebuilding it. Know what was wrong?... me neither.. but it runs good now.. LOL... It was probably something really stupid like a loose screw or bolt that I could have fixed in two seconds. But nooooo I have to tear the whole thing apart and put it back together again just because that's what I do best. LOL

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

So, back to the problem at hand. We spent a couple of days taking the carb apart and putting it back together and experiencing the same problem-clean carb, replace plugs, boat fires up and runs fine for however long we want to run it. Turn engine off, let set 15 minutes, boat won't start unless you gas it with the black gas throttle. then it runs real rough. Take out the plugs and everything's flooded. After about three days of this-trying to figure out what's stuck, causing the carb to continue to dump gas after you shut her off, we ordered a new kit and re-built the carb again. After the new kit, the engine is starting with no extra gas but seems to be running just a tad rough. so we leave her running and start pulling plug wires one by one and realize the motor runs the same with the # one wire off. We pull the plug and pressure releases like someone is pumping air out of the cilyiner. That's when we realize the # 2 is blowing into #1. So with all this info us rocket scientists are hoping it's the head gasket between #1 and #2????

NB sounds like you have it nailed down and things are not that bad afterall. I am guessing with the barage of posts your bck home and ready to pull the head :D. I would have it surfaced while its off just for good measure but somehow with a son who races ricers :D you had alredy planned this .

We call it decking! On a 100 HP race car we need all the umph we can get:D And ifn I pull that head, it's gonna get tanked and a complete re-build before I bolt it back on!

Hi North Beach,
First post about my 63 15' Starcraft Jet. I have been following this thread(quite a few hours invested, but well worth it!) My question to you, do you have the part #'s handy for the rub rail inserts?? I know you said they were from Taco but I can't find the #. Also, what did you use for the inner insert? Thanks, I appreciate any info you can give me. That 66 of yours is a fine looking boat!!!

Jim, just take your time and read as much on the resto threads here as you can. Most of what you need to do has probably been covered by someone else. you should really be able to follow in Matts footsteps if he ever quits fishing and gets back on his restoration:D

PHASE II
POWER PLANT
(Or how to restore a boat backwards)

OK, after a long day in DC today we arrived home around 5 pm and my brother stopped by. He talked me into jumping on the engine problem exploration and about an hour later, this is where we were.
HPIM1782.jpg

We disconnected the water jacket/intake, coil, thermostat housing, and misc smaller stuff and yanked the head off. This was brought on by the observation with the valve cover removed that one of the valves over the #1 piston set much higher than all the others and this is the area we're experiencing problems with.

HPIM1784.jpg

Once we got the head off things took a turn for the worse:eek:

It looks like the valve decided to thump the top of the piston a few times and some of the junk scarred up the walls of the cilynder:( You can see in this picture the outline of the valve in the center of the piston and also the scarring on both edges).
HPIM1780.jpg

We're still not real sure what brought all this about. I'll be dropping the head off at the machine shop tomorrow for testing and an estimate for tanking and a rebuild. As far as the pistons are concerned, this motor is already 40 over. We have a donor motor of unknown condition in OLE BLUE and I'll be yanking the head off that motor in the next few days to see what shape it's in. Once that happens, we'll decide if we're gonna rebuild this one with possibly sleeves, rebuild the donor motor, or start researching other options.

Stay tuned!!!
