Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

NB sorry to hear the motor woes but OMG wheres the shop towels and other covers over the pretty Deck and stuff :D. With any luck the motor in the donor has never been touched and can be easily rebuilt in time for the outing next summer ;). I have faith yall can make the motor look and run as good as the rest of that Pristine craft :D.

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

Well lets see? I took three weeks off for a bear hunt in May, just finished two weeks at the lake, and my Wyoming elk hunt starts the first of September...... I thought I might try and get a little work done this month.... But I know I'm gonna be out in the shop burning the midnight oil till this thing is right:D

BTW, I'm not really upset about the motor. I kinda wished the boat had been up and running while we were at the lake. But It's just another step in the restoration now that we have to deal with.

It must be a tough life. I'd agree, it's best to do it right while your doing it. It's not all that bad to go through a 4 banger. Hope it all goes well.

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

NB, reminds me of my old hot rod day's. I used to scavange chevy 010 four bolters just to get the blocks and hopefully a steel crank. One of the most common reasons for failure was a bad lifter that would pump up to max and stay there. That would end up dinging the piston and when that happend the rocker arm stud would pull. Sometimes the problem was just sludge or a piece of dirt and would get washed out so the only remaining symtop was a valve that wasn't opening properly. The clue was a razor sharp edge on the bottom of the lifter body and a badly worn lobe on the cam. It's pretty much a guarantee that if you've got one of the clues the rest will be there also. As you know, valve train geometry is the most critical aspect of any 4 stroke engine. It's just a shame that U.S. engine manufacturers didn't take it seriously in those years.

Now after all that, I'll be you have solid lifters huh... LOL

So, what do you guys think of the damage to the top of the piston. If the scouring of the cilynder is minimal, maybe I could just rebuild the head and go fishin??

lookin for opinions here!!!!

That small chip you see in the piston is sposed to be there-they all exhibit this.

NB thats certainly and option I would see what the machine shop says as far as the cause of the damage to the head and the valve in the first place . Worst case scenario put her back together and go esy on her the rrest of the season and pull the drive out of the parts boat and rebuild it up nice over the winter so its ready for next season with a brand new motor in it :D. That boat sat for several years as I recall so you could have just worked some sludge loose as SS suggested and thats all it was.

You need to check the lift on the valve and see if its within specs. If it is then the cam lobe is probably o.k. If the lifter isn't cupped you might be o.k.

If it was me, I'd get one good lifter and push rod and check the lift on that valve. If it's within spec's then replace all the lifters and lifter rods and put a screw-in stud on that rocker arm. If lift is out of spec, your cam is flat and you need to replace it. No need to rebuild the bottom end if the rings are good enough to last this season.

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

OK, now we think we know what's going on here. spent some time at the machine shop today. As soon as the machinist flipped the head over he knew exactly what was going on. Here's a quote-OK this head has been rebuilt. but when they rebuilt it they didn't change the valve???? to adjust for the new unleaded gas so your valve has been pushed out!!! I can't remember what it was he refered to that should have been changed but I figured when my brotherinlaw rebuilt the head way back when that was taken care of. My brother ran it all this time with unleaded. I guess it was just blind luck that it gave way during this whole carb fiasco.

Anyhow, i left the head there to be disassembled, tanked, magnafluxed(sp) and re-built. The machinist says the pitting on top of the head shouldn't cause any problems in the forseeable future and I'm ordering a brand spankin new mercruiser replacment carb YEEHHAAA!!!

NB what should have happened when the head was rebuilt was hardened valve seats should have been put in it ( for the unleaded gas ) and probably new valves at the same time and then a 3 angle valve job done on the whole assy .

NB,

That is what I had done, It really wasn't too pricey, and now I can run unleaded. Let me know if there are any major flaws in your casting, as I have a spare from my parts holiday.

Yeah, what rick said. I've been working on a set of re-roofing specifications all day and my brain is pretty much scrambled at this point.

Thanks for the offer, seriously! Remember, I too have a parts Holiday-can't have you folks getting one up on me :p

And my earlier post above should have said pitting on the piston, not the head.

Soo...... It looks like we may just be OK here for now. Man, yesterday I was looking at crate engines-the wife is about ready to break out the ole choke chain. Not to mention I just picked up that little speed boat this morning and spent about ten minutes on the plywood floor with a hatchet and struck .......WATER!! go figure:D

Speaking of Holidays-any of you folks need an 18' aluminum hull in pretty good condition? I don't think I'm gonna have any use for it. Starting to get a boat collection goin here! Bill of sale only and a free trailer.

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

NB it's crate time, valve seats didn't even cross my mind. A good shop can do it for you and it isn't all that expensive if your dead set on making that engine run.
However, I must warn you, I'm in a similar situation. I've got my boat half tore apart again because the stupid Mariner ending up having a factory defective block so it never ran right from day 1. Finding this out 2,500.00 later is the sad part. The shop that checked the block the first time missed it but I couldn't blame them because it was really hard to tell that the hole wasn't supposed to be there.

All my planning just went south and now I'm putting the Yamaha F150 on it. Of course that's also all new wiring harness and a differnt hydraulic ram for the steering. That gurgling is my Sept fishing trip going down the drain. With a little luck I'll still have enough in the budget for a trip in late October. Budget, HA, crackin myself up.

OK, back to the business at hand.

Just got the head back 4 new hardend valve seats, 4 new valve guides, re-ground the valves, magnafluxed the head and found no cracks, decked the head 050 and tanked it clean.

Guess what I'm doin this weekend? Already got all the gaskets and the new carb will arrive next Thursday!!!!!!!!:D

Outstanding... did you look into the engine any further or are you just going to put it back together and hope for the best? That probably doesn't sound very encouraging but I tend to be a little pesimistic about engines right now. This too will pass.
