Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

In 66 the only difference was size. Both models came with the hatch. The only difference I can see was measurements like length, transom height, etc. A funny note-I don't know how they did it but the 22 foot Sunchief w/110HP came in at the same weight as the 18 foot Holiday.

Also in 66 the cheifton and sunchief were on the same hull. The holiday and the starchief were on the same hull.

They also made a 20 footer in fiberglass that looks a lot like the sunchief called the suncruiser and and 18 foot model in fiberglass called the imperial. The fiberglass models were semi V, not Concave V like the aluminum boats.

They also made an outboard blank of the Sunchief.

They made all these models in 64, 65, and 66. In 67 the islander was offered in 22 foot aluminum and the holiday was offered as before and as a Deluxe model, both at 18 feet. The deluxe came with a mahogony ladder to access the bow, a glove compartment, a wood grain strip down the center of the bow like Kev's stripe and some sort of a wood grain instrument panel. We haven't seen one of those yet either! No Sunchiefs were available this year.

I don't know what was available in 68 cause I don't have the brochure.

In 69 they quit putting specs in the brochures and came out with an couple of 18 foot bowriders called the offshore and supersport along with the 18 foot holiday. The supersport only came in an outboard model and the offshore looked just like it but came in both the i/o and ob model.

I guess, from what I've seen here, that sometime in the 70's (after 71) they started making 22 foot holidays. Is that right?

NB in 74 the largest Holiday was a 21' in either I/O or OB configurations. The 77 brochure however does show a 22' Holiday with the same drive options as 74 :D. The truly odd one in 77 was you could get a holiday in any length from 14' to 18' and then it went to 22' even funnier is the differance between the 15' and 16' Holiday was 1/2" in length :D.

Well..I guess mine is a de-luxe model!

It def has the glove box...And I had to cut and scrape remnants of old Pontiac Safari Wagon wood grain vinyl off of some of the bow/console area!

Any idea why the call it the Holiday-V ?
Was there just a Holiday? The "V" for the hull?

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

OK, we're back up and running again!!!!!!

I prepped everything yesterday- Dumped the oil with my handy oil evacuation pump, changed the oil filter, picked up the oil, new plugs and wire brushed all the gasket surfaces. I also hit all the head bolt threads with the wire wheel to remove rust build up as recommended.

My brother showed up at 10 this morning and we went about putting it all back together. Took about 4 hours. Would have gone quicker but we used this as a teaching session and we also did everything by the old skool mercruiser manuals I purchased oneBay.

here's the two videos showing the valve adjustment at the end.

After all this we fired it up again and adjusted the idle and I think we're ready for another shakeout run. BTW, the new carb doesn't arrive until this thursday.

Its been a long time but I remember doing this with feeler gauges and only if there was something wrong doing it by ear. Oh those were the good old days when cars were simple.

H, I know what you mean. I used to run around on a 60 sporster with solid lift. Had to adjust the lifters regularly. The book said to do the feeler guage approach on some models, but this was the recommended proceedure for the in line 4.

Here's another video we just got from our friend with the old Orlando clipper of our first launch day.

NB good to see and :D hear you back up and running :D. That first video almost sounded like an old Model A flathead 4 banger running :D. much better by video 2 and the launch video looked good to although they cut it off before you gooosed her out of the no wake zone :D.

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

Yeah we're gonna install the new carb on Thursday and I'll get some good video on the weekend:D

I just wanted to show how she smoothed out while adjusting the valves.

I also did a compression check. The book says 140 across the board. I'm reading 104,101,101,104. Not bad for a 43 year old rebuilt 4 banger.

So I'm getting ready to put her back in the garage and when i hit the tilt button my brand new steel braided line on the back of the boat ruptures and fluid goes everwhere. Not at the fitting-in the middle of the line:eek:

GEEEZZZ......

Re: 66 Starcraft Sunchief Re-Build

Well if theres any good news to that ( the hose should be under warranty ) :D. NB I hate to say it but you are gonna have to rebuild the motor and outdrive completely thats the only answer I can give you they are pissed cause you made the rest of the boat so pretty and just dusted them off cept for the outdrive you did paint it :D.

LOL, yep when it rains it pours. I took mine out with the F-150 on it yesterday and it's way too much motor for my boat. Another well thought out plan that went south! If I may quote again "GEEEZZZ...." I'm not sure what I'm going to do now. Maybe a new E-Tec 115, ka-ching 14,000.00 with everything that needs to go with it. Ouch..

Boats, what the heck is it that makes them so luring to people like us?

sschefer I would be willing to bet you could find some poor soul with a 115 that would be willing to trade you for the 150 fairly easy by putting an add on craigslist :D. I have to ask though is it the weight thats a problem or the horsepower since you can always dial the power down.

Hey NB looking good and sounded good the best part about all this is that the liquid Limo will have all the Cobwebs out before the 2010. That's the positive way to think about it. ;) Hey that name might come to life when some of us others would be there just getting the Cobwebs out.
Hey sschefer what's a F150 isn't that a truck?? I am looking for a 150 hp have a 115 merc HMMMMMM!
