Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy
Thanks for the encouragement Decker....don't know how you ground with just a face shield. I have a small gap on the bridge of my nose with the goggles, got a blast from the cooling vents on the grinder tonight, filled my left eye with dust right quick. Good thing I had bought some eye wash and keep it handy.
BH - I had the exact same thoughts when I first saw that picture! lol....and thank you for the kind words.
In anwer to your questions. I cut the inside skin for two reasons. One - I would not have known where to cut from the outside. Two - I didn't want to have to reglass and gelcoat. I may eventually look at the gelcoat, but just getting the interior sound is my main objective right now.
I did not cut the glass where the gimble housing was mounted, this is how it looked from the factory.
As you may have noticed, no update last night. We had some heavy rains yesterday, didn't want to track mud into the boat. Oh how I envy those of you with an actual workpsace.
Tonight I go out and there is water in the boat.
I had just vac'd it up in this shot. Do I need to worry about water so much during this stage? I mean it is resin/glass shouldn't soak up anything before it has a chance to dry, right?
I looked all over the boat, for evidence of the water's entry. It really just looked like it entered from the transom hole. Though I did see this little leak. ZGoing straight into the foam on the bow. In fact during this evening's grinding session some water began to run out of the glass right underneath this area. It sure seems to me that there is an awful lot of glass layers in the floor of this boat. Earlier in the thread when I was pointing out areas I thought might be a repair, I am beginning to understand it was just the heavy weave of glass they laid down. Full of airspace too.
You can see in this after shot where the chine on the right is covered with this glass I mentioned. I have been cutting it away in most places. If it lays flat I leave it. Didn't have alot of time tonight, but I got the bow section ground in with where I left off on Monday.
Sure is alot of dust! I tried keeping the hose near tyhe grinder - saw little help doing this. Almost forgot - tried putting soap on the goggles, I only had to clean them once, but it was rather cool today.
