It is fun eh? Hasn't been too warm today, kind of overcast so the green house is staying cool.

All the prep work seems like it takes forever. It's progress, but you don't feel like anything real is getting done. Then the floor goes in. You think, now I'm getting somewhere. You know what I'm saying.
You are really going to town. You might be done before spring at the pace you are going. It will be spring until I can get back to mine. That will be the start of year two for me.
The shed looks good. I need to do mine. I think I have to do that about six times a year.
I did most of my work under a tarp carport. I know what you mean about the greenhouse. I ended up putting a fan in the boat for some air flow. I don't know how you do it with all the gear on and under the tarps. Someone checks on you now and then I hope.
Keep up the good work.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I have a few tricks up my sleeve. For the fogging lenses I have been sucking the moisture out with the big shop vac.
If I had some long tubing I think I would just do this...

Brother, that looks like a cross between the michelin man, an astronaut, a deep sea diver, and a MAN getting ready to do some serious Fiberglass GRINDING...

Thanks all. I think the day went well. Worst part was not being able to see after five minutes or so, then stopping to regroup. Hopefully the spit or soap on the goggles will help.

Have a good week all

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Trooper,
Your looking good in the white zoot suit.

I used the 7" grinder with 24 grit disk for mine. Man my shoulders hurt for ever, but the big disk cut faster and took less time. I also used the 4.5" grinder with 24 grit disk for the sides and small tight places.

I don't like to wear the goggles. I used a full face sheild with a head band. It keeps the dust out of my eyes and no fogging.
I could also lift it up and see very well and then pull it back down. The plastic will act as a magnet for the dust but I used windex and a old tee shirt to keep it clean. I have at least 30 to 40 hours in on the grinding and the sheild is holding up well.
It also makes the dust go around the sheild and past your head.

Your doing a great job. Keep on Keeping on :)

Hey Troop

Ok, please don't take offense BUT when I saw you in that white "zoot" suit it reminded me of the movie Ghost Busters. You look like the Sta Puf Marshmallow thing. lol

Now to the shed cleaning. In my house it would have been my wife who decided I should clean out the shed. I am sure it is different in you house. lol

Now a serious question:
You cut out a portion of the transom from the inside right? Why did you decide to cut it from the inside rather than from the outside? Appearance?

Next question:
I can't really tell from the picture but did you cut the transom glass where the gimbal housing is mounted?

Looking good. I am impressed

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks for the encouragement Decker....don't know how you ground with just a face shield. I have a small gap on the bridge of my nose with the goggles, got a blast from the cooling vents on the grinder tonight, filled my left eye with dust right quick. Good thing I had bought some eye wash and keep it handy.

BH - I had the exact same thoughts when I first saw that picture! lol....and thank you for the kind words.

In anwer to your questions. I cut the inside skin for two reasons. One - I would not have known where to cut from the outside. Two - I didn't want to have to reglass and gelcoat. I may eventually look at the gelcoat, but just getting the interior sound is my main objective right now.

I did not cut the glass where the gimble housing was mounted, this is how it looked from the factory.

As you may have noticed, no update last night. We had some heavy rains yesterday, didn't want to track mud into the boat. Oh how I envy those of you with an actual workpsace.

Tonight I go out and there is water in the boat.

I had just vac'd it up in this shot. Do I need to worry about water so much during this stage? I mean it is resin/glass shouldn't soak up anything before it has a chance to dry, right?
DSC00811.jpg

I looked all over the boat, for evidence of the water's entry. It really just looked like it entered from the transom hole. Though I did see this little leak. ZGoing straight into the foam on the bow. In fact during this evening's grinding session some water began to run out of the glass right underneath this area. It sure seems to me that there is an awful lot of glass layers in the floor of this boat. Earlier in the thread when I was pointing out areas I thought might be a repair, I am beginning to understand it was just the heavy weave of glass they laid down. Full of airspace too.

You can see in this after shot where the chine on the right is covered with this glass I mentioned. I have been cutting it away in most places. If it lays flat I leave it. Didn't have alot of time tonight, but I got the bow section ground in with where I left off on Monday.
Sure is alot of dust! I tried keeping the hose near tyhe grinder - saw little help doing this. Almost forgot - tried putting soap on the goggles, I only had to clean them once, but it was rather cool today.

Get some of this Window Seal Tape and tape the edges of your goggles. It really helps make a tight seal. Walmart sells it cheap.

Do you have any woodworking friends? If so you might ask if they have a portable dust collector. They really work great for sucking up the dust when grinding.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Hey Trooper.
Sorry to hear about the glass dust getting in your eye. Sounds like a good ideal that Wood gave you about the tape.

That's one of the reasons I don't like the goggles. They don't fit good and they cut into my face when I pull them tight enough to seal them off.

The face shield goes around my face and past my eyes. It covers my whole face and I just like it better. If I wear the goggles I get dust all on my face were the goggles stop and the respirator starts and above on my forehead. The face shield stops 99% of that.
But that's just me and only my way of doing it, (LOL)
I know the feeling about working outside. If I had a way to get this boat inside I would be well on my way to having it done.
Keep it up. Your doing great.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

The eye will be OK just clean it out with a little acetone. Just kidding Trooper please don,t use that advice !
I did get acetone in one of my eye,s once . I must have knocked over everything in my work area on the way to the water hose!
Well it took 3 nights to do it but I read your whole thread. Seems your getten alot done even with all the rain. If you don,t mind I,ll
tag along and chime in now and then..
See ya later S.P.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

A little teaser of what is to come......

Started working about 8 am this morning. Sanding disks are lasting about an hour - 24 grit. Starting to retthink this 4.5" grinder. The Mrs. entered me in a drawing at the local HZF for a new grinder....hope it is the 7" model :)

Going along quite nicely. Used some cotton to fill the little void cross my nose for the goggles. They haven't been fogging up too bad so far. How ever, I am noticing it is quite difficult to breathe, think it is time for a new set of filters. I have looked last few ties I have been to the store but have not seen any that are the same as what came with the respirator. Guess I will have to go get a new one. Hate to spend twice the cost of filters though. The lower strap has broke on me like 4 times. I keep taping it, but it broke again, maybe I will just go ahead and grt the new respirator.

More later....got to love this powder eh?

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Hey Trooper,
Before you spend the bucks on another set of filters, do your filters have a Pre-filter? If so, disassemble, knock the build up off and you should be good to go...Hope this helps...
Oh and BTW, that's not dust, this is DUST!...

DSCF1352.jpg

Hahahaha...this was almost ten minutes after I stopped grinding and had washed out the majority of the dust out through the bilge drains...the pile of glass dust was almost enough to re-mulch one of my gardens...

Have Fun...

That's one of the reasons I cut up the glass boat and switched to aluminum. Keep up the good work.
