Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks for all the info guys...

I did a little more sanding tonight...Red and brown flake goes at least 6" or so lower...but it does not go to the bottom of the hull...

I finished the 8" tabbing on the deck plate...Also got the first layer of tabbing done on the mounts. Not sure how to do it proper there...just hitting every joint with the hull...also 2 layers over the top of the mounts...

Troop a buddy of mine at work just goot his Camero out of the body shop and the 600hp beast under the hood is a little loud but with the hood shut and a layer of DYNOMAT applied to the inside of the hood lowers the sound considerably he said it wasn't that exspensive got it at Summit racing. I'm kinda lost on what your dealing with on the tank must have missed it! hope you work it out without ruining that paint.

It's about 1/4"- 3/8" just like the small bubble wrap. It did quiet down the motor a bit.

That makes two of us :)

Well, the tank ended up being a tad bit taller than I had planned for. So I will be either covering it with the doghouse, or building some kind of step....most like the first option...

I also need to figure out a way to secure it.

This is what I have in mind...

GT's idea of using a rubber mat might work for the sides too...

The peice of deck looks great. Your pic ^^^^ looks like it will work well to hold down the tank.
I did put gelcoat down in my fuel cell compartment. I didn't want any gas to settle on bare resin. Friscoboater did the gelcoat also.
He put 2 coats in his.

Thanks Decker....

I still have no idea how I am going to hold the tank down...not much room...I'll post some pics tomorrow maybe...

Went to get some more screws....dang SS screws are expensive! Had a laundry list of items I wanted so I can start making some progress on the Deck...What I considered the most important piece...couldn't find it...the anti-siphon fitting...

So....decided to go with a couple of Deck access plates....Paid $6 each at the local marine store...that didn't have my barb...

Found the exact same thing at a local big chain sports place...clearance...$1.98 tempted to take them back but not worth the hassle....little guy has to make a buck too I spose...

Hoping I can get some more resin this week...if not will be a couple weeks....wait and see....

In the meantime..deiced to try out gelcoat.....

Looks like coverage is fine in this pic...

My back is killing me...can ya tell?

Coverage not so good in this one...did I roll it out too thin?

See the skeeter bottom right? I tried pulling her out..popped...full of blood all over my fresh white gelcoat!

Hang on folks....almost the weekend!!

Shes looking good Troop.
Its amazing how thick the gelcoat is and how thin it spreads out. I had to put 2 coats on mine.
I think your headed in the right direction with the diagram you did. That should be more than enough to hold down the tank.

Thanks Decker....I started with just 3oz...added 6 more...that stuff does thin out a lot...I used what was left in the roller to hit the bilge a little bit...I used surface wax in it too...that be a problem? hate to have to hit it with a sander before next coat...maybe a little acetone?

How long does it take for the gel coat to start to harden? I want to roll my deck with it..

Troop I know this might way outside the box but while at work I was thinking about your issue with the tank! I do not have the software to make it visual but what if you fabbed a clamp type fixture to a deck plate similar to what you have in your drawing maybe with some holding screws then drop it on top of the tank in the assigned nicely gelcoated area it could work if layed out right. Well anyway it's just a thought or something to think about.

From what I read you need to sand it to remove the wax. You might be able to use acetone but not sure. Need to ask Yatch Doctor or oops about that.

Sp. The gel coat works just like the resin. It may even setup alittle faster.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Well, it is still tacky right now...I'm sure it will have hardened by morning.

Ya I was afraid I might have to sand it...as thick as the stuff was I was convinced it would cover in one coat...Will wait and see how it looks tomorrow...Maybe one coat will be plenty for a fuel tank area that should never see the light of day again in my time....

FF I think I follow...are you saying to have something that just pushes to the top of the tank? That might work, but the tank does flex quite a bit on the top side..I may have an idea, will post more on it once I get the materials tomorrow...

If the gel works like standard resin, can't even the blushing waxed resin get laid up wet on wet? No sanding between? If it kicks, sanding is required to remove the blush.

Now that is something I may go try to find out....I asked the grandson to go check it, to see if it was tacky still..it is...and it is missing a finger tip size spot...right in the center of the compartment floor! doh....guess he will learn eventually...

I wouldn't trust it s gospel but this seems to suggest that wet on wet is A-OK on waxed gelcoat..... Missing a fingertip spot, that doesn't sound tacky, sounds WET...... How long has it been down??

Wasn't long when he had done that...maybe 30 or 45 minutes...I just checked again, getting tacky now...sure hope I mixed it at right ratio...they had a sheet of paper that said 10 drops of MEKP for 1oz...so I used 30...which was real close to 2ml...when I mixed the 6oz I just put about 3-4ml...maybe it was a tad shy?

Thinking I need to run out there in the dark and put another coat down now...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

According to what I have gleaned from Yacht Dr. a 2% ratio of MEKP is the correct ratio for gelcoat. With High temps maybe drop to 1.5% and again you can cool it with and ice chest to fool it. Wet on wet is OK with wax. Application should be about 20 mils thick but that's for a hull so you can be lighter for your tank area. JMHO.

Thanks Wood, JB....I went ahead and put another coat on (6oz)..have no idea how thick it is, but it is fully white now....from what my old eyes can tell with a couple of flashlights...will have to wait and see what tomorrow looks like....

Thanks for watching out for me guys...
