Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I found that without the transom, splashwell and coaming the boat is like a wet noodle. I put the transom, the splash well and the coaming back in before it was flipped to do the hull repair. The shop I took it to advised that I do that to avoid tweeking the entire hull. As it was I had to force one of the stringers back into square.

Since I still have the splashwell in place I might be ok to flip as-is. Tough call.

HA...You have a boat or two you're working on??

My AeroCraft is certainly not a work of art, but it still floats and I'm just waiting on getting some new decals so it's basically finished. The interior needs some attention but that can wait.

I had a nice bonfire last night and burned the rest of the wood from the SS.

We got the entire garage cleaned up and organized, all scrap wood burnt and now I will have an easier time locating parts and tools. That's the plan anyway.

I left the camera in Grass Lake so you guys are gonna have to take my word for now if I make any progress.

I keep telling Roslynn that half of the stuff in the garage goes in the SS once it's finished, so we will be able to park a car in there before long.:)

Huron Sr. drove down today to watch my oldest play T-ball...and dropped off an extra seat base and pedestal.

Not sure what I should do with it. It's super short at 8" so it would need to be on a box or something.

He removed it from his Sea Nymph since he doesn't like sitting that low.

Paint removal resumes tomorrow.:)

8" is what you need if you want your head below the top of the windshield. That is what I ordered for the 18 and used in the 16.
I flipped the 18 with out the transom or splash well and didn't notice any flexing while doing it.

Huron i know what ya mean about the amount of stuff that piles up in the garage.... my buddies garage is FULL... i got piles of extra new material that needs to be returned to Lowes, old stuff that needs trashed, tools everywhere maybe ill get some organization soon.... bonfire for the scrap wood sounds like a great idea minus the burn bans Arkansas is currently under.... Your project is coming along great! Keep it up... I'm still following!

As far as the flipping, I did all of the stripping work on the inside. Flipped the hull, worked the bottom, painted it and flipped again. I put all of my gluvit in then i put the transom in place. I have an 18ss it did not flex. It was amazingly light. I had even removed the aluminum stringers so i could thoroughly strip the buildup out of the bottom. It may flex a little bit, but with three men it was no trouble and did not get out of square.

Back to work on the SS.:)

My CMC bracket needed some corrosion removed so I got to it with the 3M wheel. Not finished cleaning it up yet but improved.

One other area of progress...I took a length of Stren braided line and sawed thru the double-sided tape holding on the Starcraft badges.

That tape is something else, almost as good as 5200.

I'm not sure what to do with these things. Any ideas?

I believe they had chrome paint on them or something.

I dunno buddy but they are in excellent shape for being 30 years old! Shoot man, I'm just a little older than that and I have a few cracks, breaks and missing pieces.

Maybe hit em with the paint color of your choice to look nice on the hull eh.

Hope you had a great time at the lake:)

I would paint em up and stick em on the bedroom wall I'm sure the boss wouldn't mind:eek: Seriously though they are in good shape should be able to do like Jas suggested and reuse em .

I was lucky enough to have some help making the template for the stripe.

There are some marks there indicating rivets, so it will be all lined up later on.

We just got back from camping/family reunion, and tomorrow we are headed 4 hours north until sunday...so I'm glad we got at least a few things accomplished today.

We should be ready to flip the boat as soon as we get back in town.

Should look sharp when painted. I vote for repainting and using the Stafcraft tags too.

The factory paint is now gone from the interior, since we got back from some vacations and finally had some time to work.:)

We attacked the paint with the Citristrip gel and it worked very well with a brush.

I removed the first layer of yellow paint off her with the shop vac Roslynn came along and scrubbed it using a non-abrasive pad.

I did plenty of work, just not captured in the photos.:D

The bow piece got some attention as well. Not too many scratches, just a few dents.:)

HA... you could paint a flat board then dip letter side down in order to coat only the top.... if you plan on reattaching to the boat again. If not.... I liked Jason idea of adding some Starcraft decals to his Islanders trailer. You could rivet it to the trailer if you wernt planning on putting it back on the boat :D
