I'd do the absolute best you can to keep the hull supported NOW, not after more demo. And what you've added is a start, but IMHO, insufficient.

If the hull goes out of shape during demo, it may be difficult to guess-timate where it's supposed to be. The cap fitting is only 1 concern.

I'll add more tomorrow to be completely sure the hull stays the same shape during demo and rebuild.

OK, so I've reinforced the hull about 6x what it was. It doesn't move under my weight now. I used all scrap wood, really long screws and c-clamps.

Picked up a few more c-clamps and some grinding pads today. They were 5$ and some change for 4 pads. Not bad at all.

if you use a harbor freight grinder watch the brushes on the side they get hot as heck when you grind wear long sleeves long paints cover exposed skin in baby powder. its going to suck for the next few weeks as you grind out the bad/unwanted glass

if you use a harbor freight grinder watch the brushes on the side they get hot as heck when you grind wear long sleeves long paints cover exposed skin in baby powder. its going to suck for the next few weeks as you grind out the bad/unwanted glass

Thanks for the heads up CS. I have a Dwalt angle grinder that works very well. I'll have the grinding done in a few days. I am over the demo. I want to get on to the rebuild.

OK guys I hit another important question and a possible stopping point. As I'm tearing this transom out I got the wood down to the hull and I see an extra layer of fiberglass on the hull. Am I leaving this or taking it out????

grind it smooth! that's where the manufacture put the wood on the hull and did not make contact with the back of the boat <void in hull>

Update on progress.

I got through the right side of the transom last night. I picked the side which was less rotten to do first. Man it sucked. I was using a chisel and taking flakes of wood off at a time. The manufacturer layered the wood with fiberglass in between for more structure I assume. 1/4" ply, glass, 1/4" ply, glass, etc so on and so forth. I won't be doing it like that. Demo was WAY longer than it could have been because of how they did it. Regardless, I'm half through the transom and the other side is wood paste so aside from cutting the fiberglass out, cake.

That sucks. Looks like they changed their construction technique from 1984. it was two layers of 3/4" covered in 'glass.

Should I pressure wash the entire thing once I have everything cut out? Then once more after I've done the grinding?

Also, in the second picture above, at the bottom of the transom there is break in the fiberglass. I believe Caribbean Soul said to just grind that out...will it eventually be solid? I don't want to have to grind that whole layer off, lots of glass to lose.

I pressure washed mine. yes, you will need to grind down, and build up.

I feel like I should be buying the materials for the build back. What should I get? I'm using the epoxy I have for both making the PB and coating the wood for the new stringers and bulkheads. I will probably switch to polyester for the deck and everything else I need it for.

What fiberglass do I need to buy and what resin etc or should I just refer to the stringer / transom tutorial that's on this forum?

look around town and find out if or where a fiberglass suppler is located, not a marina or body shop that sells fiberglass but a true supply house. My guy I buy epoxy Fiberglass Florida, Inc. Fiberglass Products, Resins, Supplies and Materials i am getting 7.5 gallons for $320 no shipping cost! (I am on my 4th pail) I bought a full roll of 1708 a full roll of 10" 1708 another full roll of 6" 1708. I have more than I need and will sell the extra fiberglass when my project is finished. my point here is a full roll (75yds) may cost the same as 25yds cut from the roll. my project is a 24' center console that I plan on keeping until the the day I die so I am ok with overbuilding it.

If you start with epoxy the entire project will need to be epoxy you cant cut over to poly 1/2 way through. epoxy is nicer to work with than poly but is 1/3 more expensive.

other supply's you need are; milk cartons start saving yours cut the bottom out just below the handle for mixing your resin in. something to mix the resin with I took a coat hanger bent it into a T and chuck it up to a cordless drill to make fast work of mixing. paint brushes harbor fright sells 2'' and 3" boxes for $6 on sale keep an eye out. I also use a 4" roller to spread out the epoxy Home Depot has a 1/4 nap 9" roller that can handle epoxy, I cut them down on my table saw. I know you have a miketa grinder but harbor freight sells one for $15 on sale the fiberglass dust will kill the grinder hate to see a "C" note in the trash can.

General question for the people monitoring this ongoing resto.

As I'm building this boat back, stringers, bulkheads, transom, etc so on and so forth ... am I going to have to build everything back the exact way it was or do I have some room to play a little? I have measurements of everything but I believe getting everything exactly the way it was is going to be impossible. I anticipate having pieces a hair too this or too that. So again ... will everything have to be exact ?

I am considering changing the way the stringers were installed originally and definitely doing the transom a different way by using one piece of wood instead of sandwiches and nailed smaller pieces. Still surprised to find how that was done originally.

The stringers were two separate pieces. I want to make it one piece.

The cooler is a mystery to me. How did they create this section on the boat? Is there a piece of sealed ply laying on top of the middle stringer? It seams as though the drain in the cooler is just a hole drilled through the bottom into the bilge area. I can see how I could build this back but I would drill the hole too big, fill with epoxy adhesive and redrill for the actual size because I can see this as being an easy way for water to start wicking.

Oh yeah, transom is out. Lol. Forgot to mention that.

Yes, the floor of the cooler is a flat piece of ply with a drain fitting sitting over the spine and running between the stringers

I can tell you that with my boat there was not a lot of room for error. Now I can see others that it would not be such a big deal. Mine though, I had 2 livewells and if I placed the bulkheads to far forward or back they would have interfeered with the livewells. I did not realize this till after I was done glassing everything in. So Its a good thing that I measured very well. However I can not say the same about the front deck. I am trying to figure that out and its not going well...
