Re: Average Cruise Speed

LOL I'm sure I can make my boat fly and scare the heck out of myself and family. I reserve all that power for Pulling Skiers, tubers, Ect.

Well running WOT does allow you to make sure that the engine is functioning properly through the entire RPM band. If you weren't able to get to WOT rpms, there may be something wrong with the engine or prop selection. I don't think in this context it constitutes a d!ck measuring contest. I would guess your boat runs close to 50mph top end. I don't think that will scare anybody on the boat unless you try while the waves are white-capping! :)

Re: Average Cruise Speed

I cruise at about 30mph or just under. Top speed is only 34mph but it takes about 800rpm to get the last 4mph out of her.

Maybe when I get more boating Experience I will have the Nerve to Open her up WOT for maybe 30 Seconds. I only have been a boat owner for a month.

We cruise about 3200rpm at 30mph. Nice easy ride.
When the conditions are right I sometimes give her WOT about 49mph. Just to make sure everything is running right

What is this "cruise" you speak of? I go 20 with boarder in tow, 28 with a skier, WOT if I need to get somewhere :D

Re: Average Cruise Speed

I keep it down to 30--when towing broken down I/O's.

Seriously, most boats you can get up on a plane and cut back the rpm's without losing much speed--that's a sweet spot. Growing up, I was told that our OMC's actually had a fuel saver feature where you could cut back the throttle and rpm, keep the speed, and save a gallon out of 6--like an overdrive. Anyone heard of this? Maybe I'll go to the OB boards and ask.

But with motors and funky gas, you should stretch it out at full every trip, especially if you've spend the day in no wakes, trolling, etc. I have a nice stretch coming in from the harbor where I do this. If the passengers squeal, bonus!

you'll get the nerve up soon enough man. take your time. as noted before though, you do need to find out what wot rpm is on your rig to be sure your achieving the proper wot spec. i've even heard that its good to give her wot sometimes. just to blow the smoke out of her... i usually give mine a wot burst every couple times out. just to be sure nothing is a miss and i can still reach spec.

me, i'm with the slow crowd. cruise at 2500-3000 rpm. sometimes as slow as 2100-2200 which is about as low as i can be and not fall off plane. est. mph is 25-30 and 21-22 mph.. my tach is about in sink with mph for some reason. mostly i don't know how fast cause i don't have a speedo. but do have a gps which is where the speed est. come from... my top speed is only 41 or 42mph.. kinda slow by the days standards i guess.

No worries. You shouldn't really run it at WOT for much longer than that anyway, it just drinks more gas!

Re: Average Cruise Speed

According to my fuel flow meter, mine is most efficient at 3200 RPM which translates to 30 to 33 MPH depending on conditions and load. I pay very little penalty in fuel efficiency if I run at 40+ MPH, but I don't do that too much.

Our 42 does great at hull speed. 9 knots. The 28 seems to love 6 knots. I dont have any speed devices on the runabouts. I would guess I run them about 25 seems like the slower I go the less fuel I burn and I get to spend more quality time looking around. I like to get close to the wildlife on the ICW

Around 43 depending on the boat, conditions, my crew, and my fuel budget.;)

Pretty funny, though...
There's another site where a couple of us are members. They don't even talk below 60 mph (53 is the best I've got in the MO Belle, 63 in the Texas Belle).

Many there are in the triple-digit range.

Re: Average Cruise Speed

Depends on the conditions, traffic, weather and distance for me. I often cruise at 40 MPH which is only 3600 RPM with a light load. 30 offshore or in rougher water is typical too. If I was in a single screw displacement hull under 40 ft. might only be 10 MPH. Just depends . . . ;)

Re: Average Cruise Speed

Best cruising speed for my usual local conditions is 23-24 knots @ 3200 rpm. It's a nice speed- boat rides smoothly, engine sounds good, fuel economy is good and I'm covering ground. I had it over 40 knots during the sea trial, but didn't have a single other day last summer when the water was smooth enough to push her above 30 comfortably.

Re: Average Cruise Speed

Depending upon load and conditions, I generally cruise at about 3,400-3,500RPM, which equals about 35 mph. Real comfortable, smooth ride and seems to be sweet spot for GPH. WOT is about 50 GPS. Pulling a tube about 25mph (or what the rider requests), skiing about 20 (again skier's call).

30 to 32 is my spot. WOT once or twice a trip for 10-15 sec to keep it humming.
