Are you going to shoot or Roll? Are you using the Pettit Undercoater Primer?

We're going to roll it, and yes the undercoat primer by Petit goes on tomorrow if the rain holds off.

FYI: With the temps as they are you might consider thinning it. If you don't have the thinner you can make your own. It is a 50/50 mix of Xylene and Naptha. Pettit recommends no more than 10% thinning but does recommend thinning when temps are over 85 degrees.

Wood, Thanks man. I got the xylene and mineral spirits for the thinner. I could get away with no thinner being that we'll be lucky to hit 70 degrees. Either way, that boat is getting painted tomorrow. Been practicing with the spray gun....yup still going to roll it. I'm horrible no sense in BS'n anyone including myself.

Hey Buddy, Yeah it rarely happens that I luck out on a purchase. I intended on replacing the carpet on the bunks but it's like new.
I just finished the first coat of paint. Pics to follow. Really excited now...starting to look like a boat again.

The first coat of paint on. White gloss Petit Easypoxy. Thanks to Woodonglass for the mixture he suggested and to Lakelover for the video he directed me to. It made this way easier than I imagined. Oh, I should also mention I recruited my wife to paint along with me. Actually...she did most of it and holy crap am I glad. The roll, roll method was the way to go if you're considering rolling Easypoxy. The thinner and hardener are the only way to go. Here it is minutes after the first coat...not even dry yet. Will be scotch brighted and tack clothed for the second coat this week, 3 coats will be applied.

Just because she was too shy to get in the picture with the paint job, I'm posting a picture of the wife from a salmon fishing trip. It was cold as hell that day and by the way the clothes are hanging off her you can imagine how cold I was giving up my sweatshirt.

Thanks guys, I know I'm very lucky. Big ugly dude like me convincing her to marry me was no small achievement. We fish, hunt, travel and do everything together. Like I said when I get lucky I really hit big.

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

So this is the motor planned for the rig. It's a 90hp Johnson that a friend from work is selling. Going to pick it up this week and get it to the marina. I'm having it completely gone through. Whatever it needs it will get. Incidently it's hanging on his old Islander. Might be coming home with more than a motor. That big smile on the wife's face might change...already found outside storage for $20/month in Techumseh. I'll tell her next May I bought it if I do.

I forgot to mention that the oil injection will be bypassed on that beast. Have any of you heard the same advice on the VRO's?

Yah, I married out of my league too. The stuck jelly jar keeps me in the home for now;)

Incidently it's hanging on his old Islander. Might be coming home with more than a motor.

Holy moly:eek: An OB Islander? That is a rare bird right there! Do it man!:D

Yah, the VRO is well discussed/debated over on the OB forum. I'd bypass too.

I bypassed the VRO on my 110 Evinrude. There wasn't anything wrong with it, just gave me piece of mind. Only took about an hour to do.

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

I wouldn't bypass that VRO until it failed. YOu can always keep some 2cycle oil around and premix if it ever does, but until then, why not use it? Lot's of folks have gotten overly paranoid about that system and they don't know why. When it's working, it's a great thing to have actually. Study up on that before you decide to unhook it. At least that's my 2cents.

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

Problem with running the VRO tiil it fails is, it usually takes the motor with it. My 90 Evinrude VRO was converted the day I brought it. When I put the oil in the fuel tank then add the gas, I know my O/B is getting oil.

It's looking good. Wish I could get the wife to help out some....well, maybe not. Does your wife know you posted the pic of your Johnson for us to see?:D

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

I totally agree with the peace of mind theory Boatnut and my research on the VRO is like Dozer said. You know it's not working when it fails and there's almost nothing you can do about it at that point. If an ounce of prevention saves me from a new powerhead purchase I'm doing it. Emoney is correct I think if the motor wasn't almost 17 years old and the model didn't have a history to fail. Chase, my wife's seen the Johnson and wasn't that impressed. The outboard... that's what you meant right??:D
Thanks for the input guys. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Princ40, thanks for stopping by and for the encouragement. I've learned more about boats in this process than the last 25 years of boating. Welcome to I-boats, there's alot of info. and a network of good people to help. Stay tuned, I'll get this tub in the water yet.
