Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

That's what I used on mine, and I Added the Valspar Hardener. Lakelover is using it too! You WILL like the results. Rolling or Spraying??? What Primer??

I didn't think about the hardener until you mentioned it, I'm glad you stopped by. You think I should use it? I'm trying to get the nerve to spray it. I have all the equipment thanks to my father-in-law but lack the family jewels to pull it off. I've tried a few samples,,,,,not good. I bought the tightest cell foam rollers available. My thoughts on priming it was the self etching spray. Any tips would be seriously appreciated.

Roll n' Roll will give you GREAT results, as you can tell by lakelovers thread. Easy to do!!! Use the formula and it will flow out with little or no bubbling. I like Rustoleum's Self Etching primer. It's ingredients are top of the line. I HIGHLY recommend a pre wash of the boat with a 50/50 White Vinegar and Water solution before appling the primer. I also recommend not going HEAVY with the primer. A light coat is ALL that is required. The White will cover faster and better than lakelover's red and you will be amazed at how fast it sets. 4hrs and you can do a light "Wet Sanding" with a scotch brite pad, dry it off, tack cloth it with a cloth that has been soaked in Reulare Paint thinner and then wrung out. Let that dry and you're ready for the second coat. DO NOT mix more than you will use and do MULTIPLE light coats. I did Three on mine. I would recommend for the first coat this formula...

2cups of Pettit Easypoxy paint
1/4 cup of their thinner. If you did not buy any it is a 50/50 mix of Mineral Spirits and Xylene, so you can make your own.
1 oz. of hardener.
MIX WELL. At least 5 minutes. Do NOT SHAKE and introduce air bubbles.

With the hardener the Paint is worthless after 8 hrs in the mixing bucket.

Wood, Thanks Man! I will follow this to the letter! The painting portion of this rebuild was a major concern until now. This will help me a great deal.

Tint the gluvit and use it to paint the bottom:p. Are you going to check for leaks before painting?

Hoss, just a quick question. Are you painting the bottom for protection against scraping rocks and beaching the boat, or more for performance and aesthetics?

I'm curious, since I am considering leaving mine bare metal.

I know that some folks swear that it should be a lighter color so that when fish look up at the boat from below, it will blend in with the light sky, clouds, etc.

I've always wondered if this was a bit more rural legend than legitimate strategy.

Nice work as always, I'm sure you will float her on Lake Erie or at least the Maumee before bow season:D

Use the hardener. Seriously. That friggin' paint needs all the help it can get.

If it was possible I would! If this thing leaks after all that it will be re-incarnated as tuna cans.

HA, I'm basically painting for protection...fishing and squirrel hunting the Maumee river we pull ashore frequently. Also bow hunt the islands in the Waterville area. Cosmetically only the bow above the spray rail will be seen. My Grandfather swore only a dull aluminum hull bottom was the key to fishing clear lakes. Being that Erie and the river are mud brown I could paint it lime green and slap reflectors on it.

EZ, you're making me nervous buddy, did you have a bad exp. w/ the Easypoxy?? I'm going to your threads again and see if I missed something.

Other than it falling off and what didn't fall off being easily scratched scuffed and damaged, it's fantastic paint. I would generally keep my mouth shut and assume operator error but another member had the exact same experience. My research told me I did not need to prime if my existing paint was in good physical condition which it was so I just thoroughly scuffed it. Well there must have been some gross incompatibility because mine is coming off in sheets from the bottom. What is more discouraging though is that paint on that sides and top which isn't coming off, is easily scratched and damaged. My advice has since been to stick with Rustoleum (with hardener) or step up to a real 2-part marine paint and just don't mess with any of the middle of the road stuff. The hardener may help with the fragility.

And here begins the fork in the road....to easypoxy or not? I'm a researching Hungarian machine once again. I'm never planning on having this beast belly up again either. Unless there's a distress call and a case of flares littering the sky. ....a trail of soggy donuts and debris floating. This needs to be a one-timer paint job. I wonder if it will bond better to bare ally with their primer?

Not priming was my biggest mistake.

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

Disclaimer: I have absolutely no experience rebuilding and painting boats.

That being said....

I totally agree with EZ up there.

Go as cheap as possible (Rustoleum) and do your best, accept your limitations, go boating and have fun. I am certain it will look great. When the paint gets scratched/dinged, no sweat, rattle can touch up. Piece of cake!!! (I have a feeling you like cake, am I right brother?) Couldn't be easier.

or...

Pull out all the stops, go big league, big time, big budget, maybe even have a pro do it for you.

For me and mine, pass on everything in between. And, since I'm full on bottom feeder with a budget to match, Rustoleum.

Cheers hoss:D

BH, Mine is glass but... the EP with Hardener, Is very hard. Can't say it WON'T peel off by the end of the season. I'll just have to wait and see. But I do not it does not scratch easily on my fiberglass boat.

Hey Chase, I'm going to follow the easypoxy plan for better or worse today. The prep will be the key here. If the stuff flakes off I've sworn to beat the stuffing out of the Mgr at West Marine on some random winter night when he's least expecting it.:) Just in case, I'm charging my taser the night before because he's a big SOB.... Totally kidding of course...just incase someone actually assaults this guy. I'll post the pics soon.

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

Started the day by wiping the boat down with the 50/50 white vinegar and water mix. After 3 hours baking in the sun and dried off from the rinse. We taped it to prep for the self etching primer. I should note that because I used the Gluvit on the bottom I roughed the finish up on that lightly last week.

Are you going to shoot or Roll? Are you using the Pettit Undercoater Primer?

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

Not that the trailer needed any work but I had to wait for the primer to dry. I scrubbed it looking for rust or problem areas. Nothing...hardly a dang scratch on this. After a little soap and water it seriously looks like new. I added the bunk glides from West marine replaced bulbs on the lights and done. Never been an easier project in my driveway. Cell phone pics...poor quality
