Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

I knew you were joking Cap, and thanks for the compliment. I'm trying to make this worthy of display for all to see. The last few boats I did were done in less than 2 weeks... but man I'd hate for you guys to see them. The Starmada crew would pull my membership and lock me out of Iboats. Back then an industrial sized tube of JBWeld and the biggest bilge pumps money could buy were rebuilds. I've learned a lot from all you guys.

guys like Jas, Ez, Ha and all the rest we'd be nowhere.

Ah, I serve as eye candy around here. Somebody has to be incredibly good looking:rolleyes:

Those other two fellas are just here to justify the existence of OB's (attempt to anyway).

:D

Great progress Hoss, it's fun watching you work man!:)

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

Being that I'm putting a new 90hp on this rebuild, I didn't bother with the Merc. 50hp. I was determined to just scrap the motor to get it out of the garage. My father-in-law pleaded with me to at least try getting it started. What the heck, it's raining all day! I figured after 30 minutes if this thing doesn't turn over I'm launching it in the truck bed and be gone. I cleaned the plugs that honestly looked burned out, put a new gas line to it just for kicks......Holy CRAP it fired right up. I put muffs on it and it pumped???!!! Dad, thanks for keeping me from doing something stupid again. So the 1968 Merc 500 50hp thunderbolt will get tuned and water pump,, maybe a duck boat back up or sell on CL.

You stole that boat. $550 with that nice trailer and a motor that runs, wow. You're doing really nice work so far. What kind of 90hp are you gonna hang on there?

Wood, I wish you were too because I really don't need another motor hanging in the garage. Thinking of putting on CL for $350 and just might tomorrow.

Thanks Motorpsykler, I'm trying hard. The weather being the culprit here. That and Aeromarine shipping dept., still waiting for the epoxy resin. A friend sold me a 1997 90hp Johnson that runs like a champ. I'm picking that up when I'm able to hang it on the boat. I'm running out of room in the 2-1/2 car garage. Wife's new Mustang in the driveway / old starjet in garage. I'm on thin ice around here.

Today when I got home I found the box of Epoxy resin by the door! Holy crap did that take forever. Just in time for this weekends warmer, rainless weather. I can finally start putting this boat back together. Has anyone used the Aeromarine product before? Any insight? West systems was the last product I used but it was only a small area. The three gallons to finish this floor/transom project through Aero with the metering pumps and hardener was $190.

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

Sunday we finally got a break from the downpours. But just incase I bought an outdoor canopy before we started laminating the transom boards. Getting cocky we even laid the epoxy resin on the floor. Just as we finished the floor under the canopy,,, God upped the ante from simple rain storms to tornado warnings and severe thunderstorms. I didn't even care because I was finally making some progress on this build. We stuffed it all in the garage on saw horses with no room to spare waiting for it to cure. My Father-in-law and I mocked the weather ...heads held high as the sirens blew in the distance we ran like h#!! for the house.

Fantastic work with all the prep and polishing, and wood work. Hopefully the weather gets better for you as it's been a crazy year.

I watch the doppler radar around here when I know it's coming. :)

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

So for all my whining about waiting for the Aeromarine resin..I take it all back. It was worth the wait. Very easy to meter the mixture and after 12 hours set up ... no tack to the touch. My floors are 5/8 marine ply...once again the prejudice I battle as a fat guy could not allow for less thickness. The heavy coat I applied almost shows through the underside of the ply. I'll flip them tomorrow night and finish them off. The 90 degree weather sure came at the right time!

Re: Bighoss' 16ft SS Rebuild

Taking advantage of the sun beating down on the hull, I applied the Gluvit to the seams and every rivet. Thanks for not reminding me the stuff smells like a bum in a steam room. I think I would have skipped this step if I'd have remembered. The set time being 90 minutes changes somewhat when it's 93 degrees with sun baking the surface but I got it all on and used the 2lbs generously. Side bar here is that I'm waiting for it to cure and apply another 2lbs for a second coat.

Dozer, I know it's been crazy..only a handful of dry days in May this year. It killed the walleye run for us on the Maumee river. Thanks for checking in on me here. If you catch me doing something stupid STOP ME!!!

Sprintst, it's funny because when I was a kid it was MTV, VH1. Now it's the Weather channel and CNN that I'm glued to. I think joking about daydreaming in church will be avoided in the future as well. Not superstitious but I can't afford to risk it again!
