Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Anyone heading out this weekend? Against my better judgement (hope it's half way sane out there...) we are going out for a day or 2. Not sure if we are going to make the trek over to Tbar, or just launch out of Echo as we usually do,,, 25 miles further to Tbar and have to go through BC....

12V, what site do you get those forecasts from? I like their layout and detail.

I'm headed out Friday. My daughter's last day as a sophomore was today and my son's last day in elementary is tomorrow. Summer has begun

Those picture forecasts are off FB. Just 'like' the US National Weather Service at this link and you'll get the updates automatically: CLICKY

The next one is Windfinder. someone else posted it on here and I grabbed it. It's a great source. It seems pretty accurate as forecasting goes.. CLICKY

If you get a wild hair and head down into Temple Basin, we'll be on the right side just south of Mushroom Reef - about 4 miles before you get to T-Bar. The drop in elevation has left us a nice 100 yard slice of some awesome sand to stick your toes in. Just run back and forth, up and down the beach yelling 12v! 12v! haha:D

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

fishrdan,

I live over the hump so all of the marinas are a long way for my launch. Just curious, but if they were equal distance and you had your choice between Temple Bar and Echo Bay which would you chose for:

1. Fishing
2. Less traffic at launch ramp
3. Road conditions and travel safety

Thanks. :)

I figured I'd chime in on this even though my knowledge of Echo and the Overton Arm is somewhat dated. We used to spend a lot of time there when we had friends with HBs at Overton and Echo. They're all at T-Bar now so we only go up for a cruise or ice cream at Echo's dock store.

1. I'm really no fisherman, but I know that during the tourney's I hear better luck in the area around T-Bar.

2. I haven't launched at Echo for quite a few years, but when we did there was more ramp traffic there. I haven't seen the new ramp at echo. Dan will know better about that, but I can tell you that above 1100' ele Temple Bar's ramp is pretty nice and not much traffic.

3. The new highway over the bridge is excellent. They always seem to be 'working' on the road out of Boulder down towards the lake, but you never see anyone operating any equipment and it never seems to change much, yet the cones are always there and the speed limit is a dorky 35. After that it's some of the best, smoothest highway you'll ever drive on - until you get to the T-Bar turnoff then 25 min and you're there. The road to Echo wasn't bad last time I was on it. A lot like Temple Bar Road. I believe they've done a lot of work on the main road around the lake, and built a new bridge on the road to the marina

Alright, next up is venus crossing the sun.
I have seen venus, just as the daybreaks rising on the horizon many times, its like a flashlight shinning on your tent. When we think about or place in the universe we can only imagine, why is the so many galaxies, and whats with the black holes, and does our galaxy have one at its center?if you stand on sandy beach and look upon all the grains of sand its the same as suns in our universe and then some.Yet here we are with the perfect planet with water and all the elements suited just right, sorry this is getting deep like lake powell i better stop.

I'd think twice about crossing the Sun if I were Venus..:D There is a supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy and the general consensus is that most galaxies have one at their center. (I love this stuff!) Betelgeuse, a star classified as a Red Giant about 640 light years away and 1000 times bigger than the Sun has shrunk more than 15% since 1993 and some scientists think it could erupt into a supernova and collapse in on itself forming a black hole. Others think the shrinking may be just part of a natural cycle. It's also thought there may be black holes and even rouge planets roaming about the galaxy whose host star went supernova and blew it 'off course' so to speak. You're right about the grains of sand..there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all the beaches in the world... I guess my little beach is just a puny little galaxy somewhere in quadrant 245BB43H7M1A1

if they were equal distance and you had your choice between Temple Bar and Echo Bay which would you chose for:

1. Fishing
2. Less traffic at launch ramp
3. Road conditions and travel safety

Short version:
1- Echo
2- Tbar
3- Echo

Fishing for "me" would be out of Echo since I know it better and have my go-to spots, I don't have to do a lot of exploring at Echo. I didn't fish at Tbar except for monkeying around while the kids swam around, but I'm sure I could have applied what I know at Echo and scrounge up some decent fishing.

Traffic at the launch ramps varies, but I would have to give that one to Tbar. Years ago, Echo was "PACKED" on big weekends and I swore off it at those times, but it hasn't been bad the past couple times I ventured out on the big weekends. The road to Echo used to be really bad, which kept a lot of people away, but it's nice now. Tbar being so far away keeps the traffic lower than the other marina's, an extra hour compared to Hemminway or Callville. I can launch my boat at Echo without issues, but their launch ramp is pretty much the same angle the whole way across, where Tbar has the shallow (too shallow for me) main ramp and the deep water ramp off to the west. Also, it's easier to navigate out of the marina at Tbar since Echo has a narrow channel going past the marina.

Traveling out to each of those places isn't bad, or maybe I should say, equally bad. Most of the road out to Echo was repaved in the past several years, only the last 4-5 miles after turning off the lake road is older and rough, not a biggie. Tbar's road off 93 was surprisingly nice, but going through BC is kind of a pain as you have to slowdown and they are doing road construction between BC and the dam. On long weekends when there is a lot of traffic going through BC it can get backed up, even with the new construction I've seen standing traffic heading in-out of BC, it doesn't happen often though. Towing to Echo is easier as there are less long grades, but slower going because of the lake road. I drive to Echo at 50-55, going faster down grade and let the rig's momentum carry it up the next hill, can't do that much going to Tbar because of the long grades. One bonus for Tbar is it's almost all freeway/highway driving, Echo (for me) is surface streets , then the twisty hilly lake road.

One curious thing, I get better gas mileage going to Echo than Tbar, 10-11MPG compared to 8-9MPG respectively. I probably use double the fuel going out to Tbar, compared to Echo, even though Tbar is 85 miles and Echo is 60. Slower speeds and letting the rig gain/loose momentum on the hilly lake road i why I get better mileage.

School out the end of this week,,, your kids are lucky! My kids are still in school until June 8th :(

Thanks weather links. (FB one won't work for me as I'm anti-FB :D)

I'll look you up if we head over to Tbar, looks like we are going out of Echo though.

Im guessing you have a nice telescope that tracks on its own! What about the big bang theory and do you believe in GOD?Is the universe expanding and will it continue to do so are collapse back in on itself and start a new one.Matter and anti matter and dark energy are scary right.I love the universe too.Just imagine a small scale working model of the universe on display in your living room, who knows maybe in the future it will be so.And now there judging the light from distant stars for change for identifing other planets, what about all the things between us and those stars that they dont know about that can affect it right, like time.
I always like to look at the north star and try to figure how everything goes around it and it doesnt move,I wondered just now whats the name of this star?our galaxy is by far the greatest of these things, for now.

There are so many good series on the subject that have been out in the last few years that you can see new episodes or reruns. Steven Hawking has done a few and has a new one right now, The Universe, The Planets, Through the Wormhole..and on. I never get the time to watch them when they're on so I record & watch later. I also have my computer available for SETI research with a program called BOINC. You can download this program and volunteer processing time from your computer.

Hey, I don't blame you for being anti FB with all the scams out there. The reason I originally got on was to keep in contact with close and extended family. I always know what's going on and see pictures even though we're hundreds of miles apart. Now I also use it for networking the business as well, so I'm pretty dug in.

I hope you make the trek down, even if it's just to have 'that beer'! :D

Oh yes, I haven't forgotten about the Lake Mead Guess That Pic contest "Grand Prized"....

I was planning to pack some cold ones, just in case we run into each other out there.

(I hope it doesn't get too warm out there, or they might "spontaneously evaporate" :D)

Just checked the weather out at Tbar, 35MPH winds! Overton has 35MPH winds...

Think I'll wait until tomorrow afternoon to head out.

I've been checking the windfinder 12V posted up, it's pretty nice as it shows wind speed, direction and when the wind is shifting around. Most of the time, I'd rather have W or E winds, opposed to N or S winds, less fetch for waves to build. (At least for the Overton arm and Lake Mohave...)

Test... 2

Hoover Dam mid-span, 58MPH, that's a good gust. I bet the river is rolling pretty good. (AKA: good striper fishing :D)

Thanks fishrdan, I was trying to post the image and not the link but couldn't get it. Sorta looks like our last trip out there. You can't plan wind with vacation days. Have fun this weekend and be safe.

I am doing truck maint. and honey-do's this weekend and going out next Saturday to TBar for a day trip with 2 pals.

Anticipating the posts from those who enjoyed the rare cool temps on Lake Mead on this Holiday weekend. I spent today cleaning the old boat and getting it ready for taking it out next Saturday. I'm sure it will be 110* then..;)

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

We just got back from the lake, night of striper fishing and then let the kids play on the beach for a couple hours before heading in (sorry 12V, to tired to head down to Mushroom...). The launch ramp wasn't bad at all when we got there Satuday around 6PM, pulling out was a breeze, but all *ell broke loose after we got off the water, long line and boat after boat heading down to launch. Striper fishing was so-so, 20- 2-3#ers. Weather not bad, a bit on the chilly side, but we were prepared.

mz, the launch is pretty shallow and going out past the marina (they changed sides, it's on the north now) gets shallow unless you stick close to the marina, Tbar would be better with a big boat like you have. I had to keep right coming in with the traffic and was eagle eye on my depth finder and watching the water, 4' was the shallowest I noticed on my sonar coming in right as I passed the corner of the marina, tight area and not much room for passing boats....

Thanks for the heads-up FD! I really wanted to go to T-Bar but was probably heading to Callville due time/distance. I haven't launched near boulder city and don't want to deal with crowds, but it would be cool to cruise the channel and see the damn dam.

Can anyone give me some advice for a launch in Boulder Bay if that's what it's called?

FD-I am still rooting for you to set the Striper record.
