Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Re. VRO, I replaced my powerhead this summer on the 115 Faststrike (60 degree looper) It was blown when I bought the boat... supposedly because of the VRO. Well, if it had been the VRO than all 4 cylinders should have suffered instead of one piston blown to crap while the rest were just fine. That sounds like a carb issue to me. ;)

lol I know my last post will cause a major flurry of respone.

Not from me. I have had 5 OB's that had auto oil injection, took all them OFF! Many friends and mechanics I talked to said they could go out and blow the motor. I have a simple mind so it was explained this way to me: If you mix oil with the gas, as long as the engine is getting fuel it is getting oil. Easy enough for me and I don't mind mixing anyway. Piece of mind and no blown motor goes a long way in my search of fishies:D

Started a little stripping of the paint today in between rain and winterizations. The stripper was from napa and the only kind they had in stock. So I gave it a try. It worked great. Again there is only one layer of paint on my boat so it didnt take much. Since I only had one can I couldnt keep going but they ordered me some more and it should be here tomorrow or Friday. :)
I also found a local lumber yard that will get me the materials I need for the transom and floor. The floor will be marine grade plywood and in one peice! This makes me very happy cause I wont have to join two peices of wood to have a joint that might take on water.

Here are some pics:

the rivets and all came clean no problems!

took me like ten minutes to get this far! I know ill need to clean it up better but it will be easier than I thought.

I didn't know the history of the original VRO so for peace of mind (and wallet) I just premix. I'm pretty sure it was fine but why risk it? If everything were working when I bought the boat I probably would have kept the VRO intact as it's a '96.

Moving along Jim and looking good. As a suggetion since you didn't say, after I applied the stripper I used a razor blade in a holder, held it at 90 degrees and pulled it toward me. That seemed to work great, then hit it with a wire brush around rivets. I had tried all kinds of methods and that was the fastest. I worked in a 2' x 3' area at a time. Steady as she goes!

I got some more done on the hull. I like letting the stripper sit for like 10 minutes then pressure washing the loose paint off the best. Although it makes a large mess in my shop.

Looking for opinions here. I like the wqy the hull looks naked. So as iget to know this old girl more I think im going to leave the hull naked below and paint from the middle up. Has any one ever done this or seen it done and what are the pros and cons. Im never in salt water and rarely beach the boat. Is there an aluminum sealer that needs to be applied? Is there any weight savings?
Let me know.
Will post pics of progress later.

You might check out some motorcycle forums for thoughts on sealing up polished aluminum. Sport bikers like their shiny polished billet parts while cruisers tend to go for chrome. There are clear coats available but I don't know about their longevity in a boat application. Many yellow or become hazy with UV or chemical exposure. I used some eastman spray on product for alloy as a test some years back on some polished drum brake covers. (restored Moto Guzzi.) The stuff has held up pretty well but did not provide a very nice looking finish... and I don't remember the product name anyhow

Since my last post ive been doing some research and I think paint is the way to go. I maintain enough boats for customers and really need to make this one as maintenance free as i can.

Yep going to paint instead of the naked way. Still looking for a motor since the poll is deciding for me what! to run. Must have trim and tilt and be 70hp

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

I learned a couple of things today. First the paint stripper works better on a flat surface (should of known). 2ND pressure washing in the garage is a pita. So I I will either be taking the good trailer from my other boat and turtling the boat on that to move it in and out to pressure wash or building a cart. I started on the splashwell as well. I think with every ones blessing that I will only be stripping and painting the exposed areas due to the fact that the factory didnt paint there and it looks fine. What do you all think?

Pics!

Now why do those pics look familiar?
Don't make more work for yourself than neccesary. Strip off any paint that is not stuck well and scuff up the rest. Any bare spots are ZC territory. Did you try the razor blade technique? Its getting there sir, soon it will be time to paint.

Thanks Fshngho. Yeah the razor blade works good. In fact I have a bunch of different tools. I will be looking for different paint stripper in gallon sizes, because at 8 dollars a can this strip job could cost alot :)

Jim check out my thread for the kind I used. It was in a quart can from Wally World and I only took 1 1/2 quarts to do my 18', which leaves me some for the interior/consoles. If I remember @ 7-8 bucks a can.

Plain, old-fashioned oven cleaner in the spray can is a good cheap paint stripper...but be sure to read & follow label directions.

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

I love the furniture dollies from harbor freight. Ive recommended them to my customers for putting their pontoons in there garages when I pull there boats cause they dont have trailers. Since my boat is in my garage and the back door opens to the back lawn Im afraid the dollies wont work well do to there smalll wheels.

By the way seen this on craigslist: http://duluth.craigslist.org/boa/1987846514.html

I low balled him at $75.00 with out the trailer. Any ideas on what it is. Looks like a Jupiter to me but wont know till I get a better look at it. Could be my next project.
