Nice job on that transom bro, looks sweet. So are you going to replace the stringers or leave them as is?

Re: First Boat Project

Psi- Thanks, it came out better than we thought it would. And we are going to leave the stringers. They look dark in the pics but the exposed parts were painted brown and most parts of them were very well glassed in. We also took some core samples and they came out good.

Got the floor glue3d down today. Put down a good line of PL on each stringer then tied them to the hull with PL sealing any gap and covering the sides of the ply. Also put some in the seam between the plys.

So we think t would be easiest to lay down the carpet before we put the cap back on since we want to carpet up the sides of the hull too, what do you guys think?

Re: First Boat Project

I am going to carpet up the sides of my hull as well. I am going to put the cap back on first in case it has warped. It would suck to put the carpet in and then have to stretch it or have folds appear when putting the cap back on. I might be a little paranoid as I'm sure the carpet would stretch out fine, but better safe than sorry.

I guess it would also depend on if you are using one piece of carpet for the whole thing, or dividing it up into separate hull side pieces and a deck piece.

Re: First Boat Project

We want as few seams as possible and since the carpet comes 12 feet wide we can hopefully just use one large piece for the most part.

Re: First Boat Project

I put mine in with the cap on, one piece....it was really pretty easy. Use 3M super 90 spray glue....works a LOT better than the bucket glue crap. I rolled the carpet up, put it in the boat, got it unrolled and positioned....then started gluing it from the middle of the floor outwards. It took a couple of hours, but worked great. You will probably have to put some relief cuts in the bow to get it to conform. Just take your time and make sure you have extra, once you have it mostly glued down you can trim it off up under the gunnels. You want to put the carpet in close to the end, otherwise you will get it dirty or spill something on it.

Looks like you guys are getting there on the glass!

Re: First Boat Project

Should we wait till we install the seats (two lounge seats) to do the carpet? Or can the seats be installed over the carpet?

Thanks for the quick response! So if im attaching the seats over the carpet how exactly do you attach them to the deck?

Re: First Boat Project

Come on!!!! Build your own like me!!!!

Well then, IMHO you should buiild 1 1/2 inch bases with Threaded T-Nuts so you can use bolts to attach your seats. Use Toggle bolts and epoxy to attach the bases to your deck and then carpet over them. Use PB to fill the hole in the deck where the toggle bolt goes in and use Stainless bolts. This will keep you from punching unnecessary holes in your deck with screws etc... Hope this makes sense. You should check out the seats and understand how they mount first so you can decide the best way to mount them but I would definetly make bases to build up and reinforce the deck.

Re: First Boat Project

haha, i know, i know wood.

We are getting ready to buy paint. Goin to use Rustoleum Top-Side and Primer. Do you guys think 1 quart of red top side will be enough to paint the cap (the cap is off-white, tint of pink, and will have a white primer on it)?

Here are all the videos I have been promising. I compiled them but cut out some of the more dull parts. Skipo through to see things like taking off the cap, installing the transom, some glass work and some other stuff.

Might I ask have you tabbed that floor to the boat? Pl is great stuff but it will not be enough to keep that floor down.

Re: First Boat Project

To echo what proshadetree just said....I know you guys are planning on skipping glassing the deck for cost reasons which I understand. However, at least consider tabbing the deck to the hull sides. The deck is an important structural component and needs to be properly tied into the hull. The PL, in my opinion, isn't going to cut it.

1 quart will be plenty for your cap. That stuff goes a long way. I'd toggle bolt your seats.

Re: First Boat Project

Thanks for posting the video, how about some audio next time? Looks like you guys had fun with the glass, that is a big piece of mat to lay up at one time.

Ditto on tabbing in the deck, even at the transom. How did you guys attach it to the stringers? I would put some screws (carefully, wouldn't want to drew through the bottom) thought the deck into the stirngers, then cap them with a little glass. I would also glass any seams you have in the plywood. The deck is one of the main structural components.....get is some rough water and you will be glad!

Re: First Boat Project

Sorry I must not have been clear. We are going to glass the top side of the deck and tab it in with cloth, we just didnt glass the bottom of the deck but instead treated it. Hopefully we get it done today, that is our plan.

Arch, i took the audio off just cuz there was some swearing and most of the time we were just talking about stuff other than boats. I will add some commentary next time if you guys want. And we used PL on the stringers.

Re: First Boat Project

We got most of the deck glassed today. Went when except toward the end. The rear part of the deck started coming up so we couldn't do the last bit, had to weigh it down. We are going to screw it down then tab around the entire deck with 8.7 oz. cloth.

The video has us mixing resin and then us glassing the first strip on the deck.
