Very nice. What kind of glass are you using for your first layer there?

Re: First Boat Project

Looks like you are getting good at glassing. Did the directions say to measuee the MEPK by weight, usually its volume. As long as it fires off it really doesn't matter. What happened to the loose deck? didn't get glue on that part?

Re: First Boat Project

The directions said 1/2 oz. per quart. But since the density of MEPK is very close to that of water weighing it using fluid oz is basically the same. And ya, I guess the glue hadnt fully hardened yet and walking while doing the rest of the deck didnt help. we are going to make sue we do a really good glass and tab job in the back area and screw it down.

Re: First Boat Project

Got the glassing on the deck done the other day. Ran out of cloth near the end and with about a quart of resin already mixed i had to make an emergency trip to HD to bu some over priced 3M cloth. Came out well though. We put e few extra layers on the deck seams for strength. Prop wont be able to get much work done during the next week or so due to rain. I have to admit after last week a break might be nice.

Re: First Boat Project

Sorry I haven't been on the forum for a while. Ya I was in the same boat as you, PSI, it has been almost non stop rain here until a few days ago. We had to really cover the boat up well so we couldnt uncover her on the one or two dry days. But at least we got a tone of snow up in the Sierras so we have been spending a lot of time up at Lake Tahoe.

We have finally resumed work by getting the cap prepped for paint. We washed it down yesterday and are going to use 320 grit sand paper to sand her down a bit.

Question: We need to fill some holes in the cap from old hard wear. We bought Bondo-Glass to do it. Will this work or should we just use regular automotive body filler???

Also, even though it was well covered water was able to dip and build up in one of the corners of the boat. We didnt realize this untill 2 weeks after so will this standing water have caused any damage to the fiberglass?

We are waiting to get the color samples from ipaint.us but hopefully we get the cap painted next week which we have off for spring break.

Re: First Boat Project

You can't really damage the fiberglass from water, only the wood. And it looks like you sealed it up well so It should be fine. Just get it out of there asap. Good to have you back!

Ya It's good to be back. People were probably thinking I scraped the project like a lot of people on here do. I hate when I think I've found a good thread to follow but as soon as they get to the part where they are suppose to buy fiberglass stuff they seem to just disappear, haha.

Re: First Boat Project

We have been getting a bit of work done over the last few day. We used the Bondo-Glass to fill in the holes, which I would not recommend. This stuff is too thick and the bits of fiberglass in it stick together so that you cant use a putty knife to scrap off the excess of it will just pull itself out of the hole some what. so what we had to do was glob a bunch in and on top of the hole then after it cured grind/sand it off. They did come out good, however, it just was more work than it should have been.

We also got the cap sanded with 320 grit paper to get her ready for primer and paint.

Also, we flipped the cap to work on the dash. The PO must have installed some sort of radio that was not the standard DIN size and it left a sloppy hole for it in the dash so we decided to make it bigger (and more square) to install our stereo. The issue was when the PO did this he took off a bunch of the wood in the dash so that it is almost just skin, so we had to reinforce this.

Another Thing I started to work on was this blue adhesive on the back of the splashwell. This was the stuff that gave us issues when taking the cap off. Its this rock hard light blue stiff and it is now mostly still on the back of the splash well. I have been using a hammer and wood chisel to try and get it off but I think I might just have to grind it off

We would have gotten more done but when I was cleaning the jet skiis to use this weekend I decided to hook up the hose to the flush kit on my Kawi 750sx and of course there is a leak between the exhaust manifold and the header pipe. And of course the gasket is coming the day im goin out.

Re: First Boat Project

We are planning on using a self leveling topside paint. Should we use foam rollers and good quality brushes? Also, do we need to use paint thinner and what temp range is good to paint in?

I used Easypoxy and was a fan of the roll & roll technique. After rolling and evening the paint out, you roll lightly and quickly back over it. The bubbles get popped but it seems to be moving too quickly to pick up new ones.

Re: First Boat Project

I alos rolled and tipped Petit's easypoxy and used their undercoater first. I used a foam roller to apply and a foam brush to tip it back like EZ's talkin' about. One trick, rinse out the foam rollers and brush with water very well to get rid of any random shmultz <-- whoomp there it is again. Let them dry before using.

Re: First Boat Project

Looks like you are making some nice progress....sorry I missed your question on the filler, that product is made for filling large void areas, not final detail work. I used normal bondo on mine, a lot of people on here say not to....but it has worked great for me.

Re: First Boat Project

Did some detail work today.

Started off by using that buffing kit Wood told me to get on the metal cap that goes over the top of the transom; it came out pretty good aside from the all the deep scratches but at least it is clean and shinny now.

Also started to work on the Bimini cover that came with the boat. It has two 1'' tares, one strap is missing, and the two fittings that attach it to the deck are broken, but other than those easily fixed things it is in great condition. It was really dirty but a couple of hours scrubbing it made it look white again.
