Re: First Boat Project

I think the advanced is a relatively new product. So I'm pretty sure you can stick with the regular. I can't give much advice on the quantities.

Re: First Boat Project

Thanks, thats what I was hoping for since the advanced is more than twice as much. And I'll just buy a few of them then buy more as needed then document how much I used for when other people do it.

And I'm guessing there has to be a solid layer of PL between the two?

I used a notched trowel to spread the glue. You need to work fast so that it doesn't set up on you too quick though...might be nice to have a helper. My transom is small, so by myself, it was easy enough. But between spreading the glue, getting it in place and clamping it down, you have a relatively short window.

Did you use get the glue out using the gun or should I just split the tube open?

And ya I will have the other owner helping me.

Re: First Boat Project

We started getting the transom out today. It is not very badly rotten so its really hard to get out. We are basically chipping it out with hammers and wood chisels.

Also, we accidentally put a hole in the transom skin so that will need to be mended.

Re: First Boat Project

Ya we took it a little slower today. Got the rest of it out so basiclly all we have to do is a little grinding and acetone then we get to switch from destroying to creating!

The largest piece we we able to get off.

I would go ahead and repair your hole from the inside before you put in the transom. You will still need to add some glass to the outside, but most of it can be on the inside. Just dish out the inside with a grinder, then build up layers of glass till you have it a little higher than the inside skin. Then grind it down flush and add the transom. It doesn't look like too big of an issue from a structural standpoint, but you might as well do it right.

Ya i'm more worried about just making it water tight since you wont even see the patch because it will be hidden by the motor.

Becuse of this can I just grind a dish on the inside, glass it then use a body filler on the out side?

Yes, but I would still put one layer on the outside before the filler. Just enough to tie the new glass and the outside layers together.

Re: First Boat Project

We have been getting over a cold so still haven't pushed through the last bit of grinding.

I was able to get some of the detailed resto work done. I got the shifter taken apart, cleaned, and repainted. I just have to paint the throttle red and thats it. Also, i found a NOS Evinrude Simplex decal to replace the worn one but for $15 im not sure its worth it. It seems like the bulk of cost in this thing are all the little $15, $10, and $5 things.

I also got the steering taken apart. Got the first few coats of paint on the wheel and the bezel, just need to finish it with a glossy finish.

I took apart the helm panel and repainted that too.

I taped up the decals on the wheel (and that Krylon in the background isnt what i used)

I'm going to need to make an round Evinrude "E" decal for this. The HOT light has a burn in it and i found a NOS one on eBay but $35 is better spent on a gallon of resin.

We have finals this week so i'm guessing nothing major is going to get done till this weekend.

Till then.....

Looks like you are moving along! If you think the $10 and 15$ things add up, wait till you start buying those ten cent stainless screws! Ace hardware just loves us boat restorers! Looking forward to seeing what you get done this weekend.

Re: First Boat Project

We went down to HD and picked up three sheets of 3/4" AC grade plywood and some wood preservative. We got a break cuz the cashier only rung up two sheets so we got a sheet free which is pretty nice when they are $30 a pop. I saw the total and it was $80 and i though that seemed a bit low so when we loaded up i looked the the receipt and sue enough only two got rung up!

We also FINALY got the OB on the stand and moved the deck cap. Hopefuly tomarrow we get the last bit of grinding done.

Re: First Boat Project

I got that book Runabout Renovation and it said to coat the wood we use with a good wood preservative to help keep water out (obviously along with resin and fiberglass)

I haven't seen that done before, might work fine. But have you checked into if that will change the bonding properties of the fiberglass to the wood? Also, some preservatives are corrosive to metals, the pressure treated lumber that is currently available has that problem.

Jet,

Been following your thread here. Great work so far. You guys will be putting her back together soon. I would forget the wood preservative. Most of those will leave an oil based film on the surface of the wood that will cause big problems with the glassing. The resin and glass will be more than enoguh to seal up the wood and keep it good for 30+ yrs.

Re: First Boat Project

Ok, thanks for the input guys, im going to just return the stuff and use the money on extra resin. The plan is to grind today but we'll see how that goes...

Re: First Boat Project

I can't remember it if it has come up here, but you should use unwaxed resin for most of your work. The resin they sell at home depot and big box stores is waxed, it is a lot more work to use.....you have to grind between coats, you don't with unwaxed.
