Re: First Boat Project

So we got the second coat on and we still have enough paint for a third coat. Should we do a third coat. The directions say so apply two thin coats. Is that a minimum number of coats or are they saying not to do more?

Also, could I get some tips on sanding in between coats.

I did three on mine just because I had some leftover. Sanding between coats is just so there is some tooth for the next coat. I just scuffed up everything to where the gloss was gone and that's it. Can't remember the grit, 220? Whatever the directions say.

I'd do the third coat. More abrasion resistance that way.

So use around 220 grit and "sand off" all the shine?

I'd recommend using 3M Scotch Brite pads to sand between coats. Just need to knock off any "Nubs" in the paint and smooth her down a bit.

Just remember that there is a cure time on any paint, and the more coats of paint you put down at once, the longer that cure time is. Certain conditions will cause the paint to take longer to cure also...too cold, too wet ( humidity from bodies of water count ).

Re: First Boat Project

I decided to ditch the electric palm sander and sanded it all by hand. It came out much better with a much more even sand. Third coat is planned for tomorrow (Friday).

I'm looking to replace the old material for the gunwale step. Anyone have an idea of what I can use for a replacement? (Has to white or black)

I had a coupon for HR and picked up a new tongue jack for $19. The old one is lookin pretty bad, considering it has no wheel, haha.

I'd just get a piece of vinyl and cut a new insert. Or mask off that area and paint it white, then throw the molding back on over it.

Re: First Boat Project

sounds like you are moving along....should have mentioned this, but wet sanding works better on fresh paint....the paper doesn't load up near as bad.

Re: First Boat Project

Thanks Arch, I was wondering about that. How do you do it exactly?

I've been keeping my eye out for a solution to my cracked windshield. I found this on c-list. He was asking $400 for the whole thing but I e-mailed him and he didnt hesitate to take $275, and he e-mailed me again when I didnt respond so I think I may even be able to go cheaper. I would scrap the hull if I couldnt sell it then fix up and sell the trailer and sell or part out the old Evinrude. What do you all think?

Re: First Boat Project

I would go for it if the windshield will work for you. I'm guessing you could get your money back scraping it out, but have you checked to see what you have to do in order to get rid of the hull? I'm guessing that might be hard to do in your state. You can also make your own windshield out of lexan. If I remember correctly that is what Mick did on his. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=365820

On wet sanding, get a sanding sponge, 3m makes some black ones that are flexible, about 3"x4"x1/4" or so. A automotive paint supply or hardware store should have them. just wrap the paper around it and dip it in a bucket of water. Every so often dunk it again. Just keep it wet and the sludge washed off. You can also do it without the sponge, but I prefer the sponge.

You can dump the hull at any landfill. I scrapped a project boat for $16. :)

Wood- I saw that on Mick's before, I'm just woried im going to mess up an expensive sheet of lexan since i have never worked with it or a heat gun before. Is it hard to do?

PSI- I got the idea of a scrap hull for the windshield from you. Did you have to cut up the hull or did you just slide it off the trailer at the dump? Also where did you take it?

I just towed it to the local dump, used a tie down and tied it to a random pole, then drove off and trailer pulled out from under it. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

If you can get a donor boat windshield for CHEAP I'd do that. Especially if you can dump the boat. Here in Oklahoma you have so ChainSaw em down to small pieces or the dump won't take me. Major PITA.

Re: First Boat Project

Ya, I'm only going to do it if I can get it for under $225 because its a good hour and a half to get to there.

If i do get it I may have a hard time scraping the thing, may try to see if my parents want me to fix it up for them.

OMC_Paint_Colors.jpg

Paint Color codes for your Motor

Your's calls for Gold Metallic and I have been unable to find it listed anywhere. Mine was the Gunmetal Gray and they still sell it. You could probably come close by using an automotive touch up paint from Autozone etc... but it appears no one is still making the OMC Gold Metallic Evinrude paint.

Sorry Dude!!

Re: First Boat Project

Thanks for the ifo Wood! I'm just goint to do somehting simular to what Micks did as far as color goes, i really liked it.

Got the third coat on the cap, looks really good. I'm almost done with sanding the hull, just need to sand the back of the transom and hand sand the bow.

The wet sanding worked SO MUCH better!

Finishing the sanding today and starting puting the hardware on the cap. Hello Ace Hardware, haha. Also going to try and get the hull into the garage today.

I have pictures and a video that I will post prob. tonight.
