Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

Floor underlayment uses the same glue as ext. grade plywood. It typically uses Fir for its Laminates. I personally see no reason not to use it. Again, for me, it's all about encapsulation techniques, care and maintenance. If all of these are good and sound, then the wood core as long as it's adequately strong can be just about anything. But again that's just an

Just a Q?
Do you have any Mom & Pop Lumber Yards in the neighborhood?
:D

The only mom and pop stores are just hardware stores . They don't sell lumber.. At least what I have found .. I can get marine grade for 80 bucks a sheet at one of our suppliers . I have a bud that finds a lot of our hard to find material at work. I'll call him tomorrow and see what he can come up with .. Looking at the underlayment stuff up close it looks to be some pretty good looking stuff . Hardly any voids and the ply's looked glued together nicely . If I can't come up with something better it might just have to do .

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

The transom was not as rotten as I thought it would be . There was sure a lot of flex in it when I put weight on the cav plate of the o/b . But still enough bad wet stuff to make it worth replacing .

It's been a little slow going but we have managed to git the transom and stringers removed .

I had more pics but Chris forgot to upload them for posting . Now I have a grinder that will fit his hands perfectly ! ;)

Was there any use of explosives in getting that transom out?

Small update ..
Got the rest of the transom wood out and did some grinding . I almost forgot how much fun grinding is !

The original glass work is pretty rough looking . A lot of voids in the edge tabbing . Down at the bottom by the drain hole the bedding and glass is really thick . Probably 1-1/4 " in some places . Can I get away with leaving that in place as long as I get to good clean glass ? This area made up the bilge .

I see no reason why not. Grind it down and glass it up.

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

Found a bit more rot in the console bulkheads .

I am hoping I can repair this without too much trouble. My thought is cut out the bad and patch in spots then maybe a layer of 1/4" or 3/8" ply laminated over the hole thing . I really don't want to pop the rest of the cap or tear out the front deck .
Good news is I got 98% of the twist out of the hull . It was an 1-1/2" of twist and I got it down to less than a 1/4"..
Remember how I said that Chris can and will break anything ? Well instead of listening to an old fart like me when I tell him to get some WD/40 and a pipe wrench he took maters into his own hands .

You can lead em to water ...
Have a great week everyone !

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

Well after cutting the deck and stingers out it still had a pretty good twist in it . I could hold the corners down and it would for the most part straighten out . So I set up my rotating lazor level where it would shoot under the cradle and set the 2 outside supports at the transom level. Then I set the same supports level at the same distance from the transom . Raised the middle section of those supports up until they were sitting flat on the outside chines . Still had a bit of twist ,maybe 3/8" so I had to tie the corner of the starboard side of the transom down to the cradle . Now that it is laying flat and level I installed 2 more supports under a chine on each side of the keel leveled with the lazor .. So that's keel supports and every other chine with full support under them . And 3 other braces at the bow area . Cutting up the console bulkheads I think helped it lay better also . I really think a good bit of the twist was done at the factory ..

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

I started taking the wind shield's off today . Got the port side off and started thinking . Maybe get rid of the portside console to open things up a bit . Run the storage/baitwell/cooler down the port side and tie it into the front deck . Sell the dual windshields and install the small bassboat type shield on the starboard console . Chris likes the idea . I am kinda scratching my head on the whole baitwell setup . It has a through hull drain hole already there . Really not sure how to set up a functioning system . We really don,t want to go overboard on the boat . Just want it to be a bit more fishable..Trying to keep cost down at the same time ..

Great accomplishment in getting the twist out of it, A # ONE!!!
Now I am going to throw this thought out here for consideration...
How about turning it into a real fishing machine and make it into a center console...???
Huh!? Waddayathink? Ehhh...Crazy, yeah I know......I'll shut up now...

Your breaking my heart. You want to break up a great looking tri hull? I can see a platform in the bow area with a livewell. But to chop up the consoles...yikes...Just my 5 cents worth.:der::frusty:. Just kidding. I know that no matter what you do, It will look great..

With your demonstrated fabrication skills, I can already visualize how she would look. I think it would make a GREAT fishin machine. It gets my vote!!!:joyous:
