Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

GT , a c/c has definitely been given thought . Keeping it a s/c would keep the cost down I,m thinking ..

TC , nothing is cut yet or set in stone . It,s Chris's boat so he gets the final say . If it does get cut I'm making him do it so he can,t say later on that I cut up his boat .LOL! We will be using this for just chasing those reds around back in the salt creeks . It WILL get a lot of abuse !

S.p.-- not sure how I missed your new project...

Great work so far... Look forward to seeing skills carry forward to another boat! And I love the outboard tub!!

Oh, and my son takes after chris (he can break a rubber ball)

Well we have been sitting around long enough . Not much work but a lot of thinking about work ..
We cut out the template for the transom.. I know it,s been discussed many times and many ways to make templates but this just seems the easy way to go . If you have access to the back of the transom hang a piece of cardboard or heavy paper on the back and simply trace the hull along the edges .

Then measure in about 3/8" or so towards the inside of the boat and remark it . Heck you can eye ball it for the most part ..
Then cut it out on the line .

Test fit it inside and fine tune trim it up .

I did finally find some exterior grade plywood . 1 sheet of 3/4" and 2 sheet's of 5/8 for the deck at a price no one would pass up .. :eyebrows: Maybe we will cut the transom wood tomorrow ..

Tagging along on this one if ya don't mind... We're looking to be close to the same progress as I cut my transom wood just today, luckily I had my old transom to use as a template. I also cut the back of my cap so will be interested to learn from you and see how you put it back together.

The template looks good..
Sometimes the simplest way of doing things is the best way..
Get some wood cut and glassed for the transom..:D

Welcome aboard further ! As slow as this projects going I'm sure you will get yours splashed way before us .

I worked yesterday for me and worked today for the IRS ..To much OT and they really sock it to ya .
Oh well at least I was able to score on left over blue ridged foam ! :joyous:

And we also at least got the transom wood cut out .

I know most guys are using the tight bond III to glue the pieces together but is there any rule that says you can't just use PB ?

That's the way I did my tramson. I soaked it with resin and then put down some csm. Let it setup then PB'ed the heck out of it..

I used a 1/4" notched trowel and did both side with the PB.

Nice looking foam..
Have a great week SP :joyous:

Nice project you are working on there. I did my transom as you are, then used tight bond to glue the ply's together. I used PB to adhere the finished new transom to the stern, worked like a charm.
Just a though on the windshield, I know without a windshield, you may get wet, I sure did. I also vowed to never own another boat w/o a windshield!! Way too much wind rain and yes, sometimes snow!! Nothing worse than a shower of water in the morning as you head pout to your favorite fishing spot. I say keep the windshield to protect from the elements.

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

Thanks gents !
gbf, we haven't made up our minds yet on the whole setup . It will have a windshield of some sort . This is son in laws boat so he's gunna make the final decision ..

A little progress .. Got the transom pieces pb'ed together and one layer of csm on one side ..

Gunna wait till we install it in the boat before we make the transom height cut . Thinking about changing the splash area a bit .

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

Thanks guys but ya know I had a strange thing happen . :twitch:
The glass job on the picture above looks great . Just a layer of csm .. Not a single bubble in sight . Good wet out . The next day I see that micro bubble snow splotches have appeared over night . :cold: Not over the whole thing but a few places here and there . I hit a few of the heavy snow area's with my snow plow aka angle grinder and patched it back .
The only thing I can think of is it was a chilly windy damp night and I left my door open on the garage and the wind was blowing through there pretty strong . Nor'easter going on ...
This must be what happened because when I glassed the other side . Same amount of resin and glass wet out great. No overnight wind with the door closed . Not a single snow splotch in sight ..
Do you guys think the wind can do this to a good wet out layup as it dries ?

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

Some of my glass did the same thing.. Must have been the moisture in the air.. It could have also been the wood had some dry spot and didn't get wet out enough.. Had that happen to me also..

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

We threw together a set of WOG clamps in preparation for the transom installation . Luckily we had everything on hand to make them . This is just the dry fit to get them as close to adjusted correctly as possible before hand . Hopefully we will be better prepared than whoever was in charge of ObamaCare ..:usa2:

Notice a little addition to the set up . I screwed some blocks of plywood to one side of the clamp to work as a stopper . Just might cut down on the fiddling around getting the clamp height right . Placed up a few inches to make room for filleting the edges .
Chris has been on the night shift this week so I may not glue it in until this weekend .
What's your best guestimation on the amount of resin to have ready for the pb lamination ?
2 qts maybe ?

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

Few tips...
pre-mix as much PB as you think you'll need...2-3 quarts sounds about right...Keep them in three or more separate containers...
the smaller batches will tend to kick off slower because there is less heat generated from the smaller amounts...
DON'T add the MEK-P to them until you are actually ready to use it...
Keep your ratio at about 1%...Remember you are only adding the catalyst to the actual amount of resin...example...1000ML=10ML catalyst irregardless of how much thickening agents you add to it...
Work in the shade!!!
The cooler the temps the better...if possible have the resin and MEK-P down to cooler temps...
Closer to 65-70?...
Have your MEK-P pre-measured for each batch...
Add the MEK-P to each batch as you need it...
Stir it in quickly and briskly...less than a minute should be more than adequate...

Add some 2X4 Braces to the chopstick clamps...like I did...holds everything together and ready to go...also applies more even pressure...

They will be heavy, but less fiddling with them...I like your idea of the plywood stops...

Hmmmmm, what else....uhhhh...Oh yeah, do a couple of practice runs...kind of like a rehearsal...go through the moves a couple/three times then go for it...
Work quickly and efficiently...you should have about 20-25 minutes, easily, before everything has to be in place...

Use the stuff that spooges out to make as much of the fillets as possible...

Once you get it all done and want it to kick off real quick, get some direct sunlight on it...should get hard as a rock in less than 15-20 minutes...

Any left over, un-mixed PB can be stored for a few days in an airtight container for later use...

Oh yeah...Good Luck and Have Fun!:)

Re: Glassmaster SIL project .

As usual , great advise GT ! The thought did cross my mind about adding the horizontal 2x4's . I like it . Good thing I cut the threaded rods long enough for the extra thickness . Our temps are about to change up here . I think it's gunna be a fridged 68 or 70 deg up here so that should help out . How long will the unmixed pb last before it goes bad stored ?
