Hey guys, just doing my normal morning routine...cup of coffee, a smoke, and browsing through iboat's forums (God I love this site! lol) and I came up with a sort of random question that goes with a story...

So here goes, my wife and I have been together for 13yrs, married for 9 and have three boys (10yrs, 6yrs, and 10months). Now, ever since about the 2nd or 3rd month after we started dating, I have always said I found me a redneck woman.. now my 'famous' saying is I married an even bigger redneck than me! lol So anyhow, my wife has always been, what I call, a 'dock fisherman' (ultra-light pole, 4lb. test, and a shiny hook.. drop over the edge of the dock and reel in little blue-gill all day), but she never much mentioned anything about going with me when I would head to the local lake to go fishing, mainly top-water bass fishing there... So about 3yrs. ago, my dad and I ended up getting a 17' Tracker deep-v and started fishing together a lot. Still, my wife never mentioned anything to me about me and her going out fishing on it.

Now, jump to about 2 weeks ago, my folks went out on the tracker together, and my wife and I, and our two oldest boys took my tri-hull out. We had pretty much just gone down to run up and down the river a little bit, but being the guy I am, I ALWAYS take at least one rod/reel and tackle box, stowed away JUST IN CASE lol. Anyhow, just so happened that this day I had taken two of my rods, along with my oldest boys gear. So, after meeting up with my folks on the river, bs'ing for a little bit, we left them and headed down-river a little farther, where I decided to go ahead and slow her down and try a little trolling (more so to 'test the waters' on how my oldest boy would do sitting there holding his pole while we put around so that I could judge how well he would do with the 'boredom factor'). Well, low-and-behold, my wife asks if I brought a spare pole for her to use. I just kinda laughed a little, until I realized she was serious.

So, I hand her my spare, pull out my tackle box and start to show her different lures used for trolling. I told her to pick out which color she wanted to run, and that either a hot-n-tot or shadrap would be best. Well, wouldn't ya know it, by this time I had been trolling for almost an hour without so much as a hit... she drops a red/black/silver hot-n-tot in, runs it out, closes the bail and about 2 minutes later, lands a 10-12" small-mouth.... I was really excited for her, and she was too.... So here it is, about 2 weeks after that day, and I have spent close to $300 on fishing gear for her! lol She now has her own nice rod/reel combo, soft-sided tackle box, and a slew of new crank baits.

Sorry this is so long-winded, as I usually am, but if you've read this far, then obviously your a fisherman/woman as well and enjoy a good family fishing story. So after this 20 minute read, my question is how many of you guy's out there have wives/girlfriends that enjoy fishing as much as you do?

My redneck wife does not enjoy fishing, but she enjoys going out on the boat with me and reading the paper, magazine, or book while the youngest daughter and I do our thing.

Hey, in my book that's still great that she enjoys getting out there with you two even if she isn't fishing... I have an aunt that does the same thing.. uncle has a pontoon and when he takes it out fishing, she goes with him and sits in the sun reading her books while he does his thing.

I might add also that, while it would sound crazy to some, since the day I picked up this tri-hull, my relationship with my wife and kids has made a drastic improvement... it's an unexplainable feeling to have something that we ALL truly enjoy doing, and not just doing things we don't really like, just to spend time together..

p.s., I LOVE your rules or repair in your siggy LOL.. I pointed it out to my wife one day and she started laughing and say's "Heeeyyyy, that guy must be your long-lost brother!" haha

My wife doesn't like being "imprisoned" on the boat 8-10 hours at a time and has not fished in the past 5-6 years. The last timeout she slept most the time from the affects of the motion sickness medicine.

My two daughters, age 16 and 18, go once or twice a year, mostly to take pictures.

Nearly the same here ... my wife's task is to simply make any boat look better ;)

She'll take a book out and read while the kids and I fish, and she's done that since before we were married. We don't fish quite as much any more, so more often she'll just stay home now.

Mine does and has her own pole. Picked out a Microlite UL pole and a matched Pflueger reel for it. Her goal is to catch as many fish as possible. She had a couple firsts last year....first pike (24") and first bass (15"). Both were followed with Holy $..t when they first hit.

Thats awesome man! My wife has had the same reaction with EVERY strike lmao. Can't wait till she lands her first 20"+ walleye hehe. Last week she caught a 6lb channel cat and kept yelling "HELP ME BABE HELP ME!" lol

Re: How many of ya'all's wives go fishing with you??

My wife loves fishing, which is more of a bad thing than a good thing sometimes. When I'm going and she can go to, we have to go somewhere where there is a bathroom, and it has to be a nice bathroom, lol. Regional park holes in the ground and port-o-potty's are out of the question, lol. So then we are down to two places. One, that hasn't been good for a few years, and one that's great for perch and not much else. I like that place, but the perch are off limits 4 months out of the year there :( Oh, and my boat is small with no bathroom, so for the most part, going out on a boat is out of the question. Sometimes saying "Oh, sorry, there's no bathroom where we're going", is a great way to get away, lol.

So, it's a good thing and a bad thing I guess. In the end, I like that she enjoys fishing.

My wife tends to have better luck than me but it's great because I get to eat what she catches! Nothing better than hearing some drag and her saying: "Get the net!"

Ohh don't get me wrong as the pole HAD to be color matched to the reel. And then the fishing line HAD to match the pole and reel as heaven forbid the colors clashed!

She has her own tackle box, which she named, and filled at Bass Pro with lures she wanted to try. Amazingly, she did real good with the color choices as they worked for her last year on Black Lake. We have $40 in Bass Pro gift certificates so I'll have her do some more shopping again this year in Bass Pro.

Last year she mentioned that she wanted to catch bigger fish. So, I mentioned she'd need a little bigger pole. She didn't bite on that one quite yet. She's seen my stash of poles and lures

been there... one of the funnier things I've seen fishing... a couple years ago, she decided she wanted to go sit on the riverbank with me while I did some night fishing. Took both of my "deep water" poles (actually their 10' surf rods, but since we don't have any surf around here, I renamed them lol). I had just reeled in one of them to check my bait when I got a huge strike on the other one.. I grabbed the other rod, set the hook and reeled in a nice 10lb. channel cat. When I went to cast back out my wife, who is 5'2" 110lbs soaking wet, decided she wanted to try casting the other one.. it was downright hilarious watching her try to handle that 10' pole!

Wife hated my bass boat and did not want to go on the water at all. After getting the dual console, she LOVES it and feels so much more comfortable on the water and in the boat. Best money I spent on family recreation!

Add another check to the "read a book while my daughter and I fish" column.... Sure glad my daughter, who turns 16 Friday, loves to fish and snowmobile.....:)

Heck, it's BECAUSE of my wife that we fish, and bought the boat. Neither of us are anywhere approaching expert, though we're learning. She caught her first bass, about 2 1/2 pounds, a couple weeks ago and has now decided she's gonna be a bass fisherman (fisherwoman?). So far success has eluded her. I fish just to catch something. (I tell her I hate fishing, but I love catching). I've caught a few bass by "accident", which just ticks her off, hehe.

I went to the alter and will go to the grave with her. Isn't that enough?

I let her shop in peace so she returns the favor. :p

Re: How many of ya'all's wives go fishing with you??

My wife went fishing with me once (3 or 4 years before we got married) I drove 2 hours to the lake and it started to rain. We waited at the dock awhile, and finally the rain "let up" enough to venture out. She was wet, cold, and not the least bit happy (despite the fact the fishing was good). She has never touched a fishing rod since, nor has she stepped foot in a boat. I am positive she would lay out and read on the nook while I fish, but the current boat doesn't lend itself to that......the new one this spring will.

Need a bigger boat to match the bigger pole. After she falls for that. LOL

Sounds fair to me.

My bride started asking about getting a license, showed her how to do it on-line. Nuttin' yet. She also said she wanted to go out boating and watch me fish. I nudge her at 3AM and she just rolls over and says be careful. That works and if she rolls out of bed, it will be OK after I pick myself off the floor. ;)
