Home Depot has an aluminum trim section that has all kinds of real cool shapes, in black and satin anodized as well as polished. If you were to do the tops of the gunwals and deck the rub rail aluminum and inside trim will cover the edges of the vinyl if you remove them before you glue it down.

Because Nautolex has a textured surface, I don't think you should plan on adding any caulk on top of it that might show after. It will work, but depending upon the caulk and cleaning solvent that you use, it could leave quite a mess that will be hard to wipe off. Also, you wouldn't want to use a solvent that could attack the Nautolex. - Grandad

Not sure how it would work out, would really like a bead behind my side panels but I do see that could end up in a mess, maybe the vinyl could be left long and make the corner bend up and set the side panels on it forming a barrier??

I gotta admit I love your signature!!!!!. Oh ya on the advice I will have to post some swiss cheese photos for ya. Pretty bad I must say, marine tex still may be the way I go though.

Noticed that the last time I was in there (Depot) going to pick up some channels for trimming doors and side panels, And yes the rub rail will work on one side, gotta remember these old Islanders do not have a flat gunnel and i would only do the flat that is there so I will have to come up with something for the inside edge!

Dood, whatever, I only tried it once. And I didn't even like it that much.

LOL wouldn't want ya going to the dark, itchy side!

Progress note, more epoxy work done, out board mounting holes done with custom bolt plate (pics later). Paint stripper on cap and pressure wash, what a hot mess the cap is!! Lotta work to get it prepped for paint in my future!

Got a full size cad pattern made up for the outboard mounting holes, if anyone needs it inthe future let me know, I will save the file and I think a Kinkos or office depot should be able to print it out.

Center punch and steps in drill sizes gave me nice holes

2"X1/4" stainless flat stock drilled and tapped, a couple stainless bolts for the bottom holes that are in the pod, lil weld makes for some nice captive bolts.

5200 and install

Obligatory wood epoxy shot for posterity

Lotta wood in this thing!

are the nuts on those bolts just temporary?? trying to figure what your doing there?? is that strap set up with the welded bolts for the inside WHEN you go to mount your outboard?? you should do two sets of holes up top... so the motor will have another adjustment possibility... the lower mount holes on the outboards are usually SLOTS, so you don't need extra holes down there. I am mocking up my bracket in 1.5"sq pine, and have ordered my framing aluminum. bob

the nuts are there to hold it tight while the 5200 cures, bottom is slots and if anything on the top I would need to adjust down which is not happening without a jack plate!

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Progress report,
We spent the weekend cutting scrap plywood into useable pieces and sanding. Some epoxy got put down Friday and did not set up with it being cooler, until today and my son Connor sanded it down and got it ready for second coat. We have many pieces in various stages, amazed how many pieces I had to go yet, under the gunnel for support and to screw conduit to, side shelves, various lil pieces here and there. Will have to finish seat box/bat boxes, new helm, bat switch/fuse panel enclosure and need to fill in the cabin ceiling for backer to plug all the holes in it. Still got a lot of wood to deal with! goal for the week is to get all the stuff we have cut epoxied, prep the cap for paint and possibly spray some white next weekend, ambitious for sure who knows we will see where it is at next Sunday.
No pics all kinda generic wood work.
So I am thinking of ordering some Nautolex this week, need to determine the glue I am going to use. For seats and misc small pieces I was going to use DAP Weldwood contact cement, seems that it is rated to do the job and on side panels and smaller pieces should work good, how about on the floor with a good plan for laying it? will it be to big a pita to get the floor down wrinkle free?

Someone used the WeldWood contact cement. I seem to remember his trick was rolling the vinyl up and doing one side and then the other. Something like that.

And get the rollers to imbed it in the glue, and help eliminate air bubbles & wrinkles.....
Small 1 for the small stuff, edges & corners:
