I takes a little while to get used to the way it kicks off. I was working in 100 degree plus heat, and had to really mix it slow.

Hey, I know this is a boat restoration forum, but if you need any help with that kart, just holler, I'll be more than happy to impart whatever limited knowledge I have...can't be more complicated than a Mercedes 600 SEL AMG...

Thanks GT - I will definitely take you up on that.

Glad to see the progress, you did a nice job on that big layup! Good luck with the go cart.....that looks like fun!
!

Thanks Arch... Appreciate the kinds words. Hopefully, we can get the go-cart working for the little man.

Just remember if you mix a large volume of resin at one time it will get hotter in the pail and kick faster than a smaller amount. If you do use a large amount you have to spread it out alot faster.
OOPs can explain it better than me.
Hope you get some things done this weekend.

Thanks Kent.. That's a good tip... Yeah, the smaller pails definitely help guard against a premature kick...

Jay, thanks for stopping by... With the wild temp swings we have had (75 one day; 30 the next), it's been a little tough, but I am getting the hang of it.

In order to avoid a super-long post, update from this weekend is below.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Okay fellas:

Had a pretty productive weekend on the boat.

First, I got a layer of 1708 down on the inside of the transom... The lighter spots you see are not air bubbles/pockets... Those are just some light colored spots on the transom skin. Also, the large "lighter areas" running vertically on either side of the transom is just where the gel coat has been sanded off on the outside of the boat. Of course, the bright spot in the middle is camera flash... I did have some air-pockets on this one (seems 1708 is more prone to that) on the top port side of the transom just next to the fillet. Will have to knock that down (you can't really see it in the picture, but its there...unfortunately).

Transom_1708.jpg

Then, I built a little sanding shelter, so I get could down to "bid-ness" sanding/fairing the back side of the transom. Here is my little dust tent and weapons of mass destruction.

Boat_Weapons.jpg

Here is a picture of the back-side once I got through with a 3 hour sanding session. First the grinder with a 60 grit pad, then my DA sander with an 80 grit pad, and then my flat sander with a 120 grit pad, then a nice little acetone bath.

Boat_Transom_Sanded.jpg

Finally, here is the transom with a double (wet on wet) layer of CSM with a slightly larger area of 1708. I also filled the drain-hole with PB and tabbed into the hull on the bottom. There are a few air pockets on the angle where the transom meets the hull, but I will have to sand and fair that smooth anyway. The "light spots" are just same areas where the PB got removed with more aggressive sanding. I put some resin on the "light spots" before the lay-up but they still show up as a shade lighter. The dark spots running vertically on either side of the board are the PB fillets showing through from the inside...

Its really nice and flat (especially around the key-hole), but there will be a lot of fairing, sanding, smoothing back there anyway. It still sort of looks like a mess, but once its faired and sanded and painted, I think it will look good.

Transom_outside-glassed.jpg

I have a bunch of video (probably too much). Most of its boring (watching someone do FB is about as entertaining as watching someone do wallpaper)... But, I will edit it down and give you guys a glimpse of what I did.

Hope everyone is doing well. I appreciate everyone following along and helping me out.

Have a good one,
~rpm

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Thanks guys; I appreciate you stopping by and taking a look. I still have a several more build up layers and then a a lot of sanding/fairing, but I'll get there eventually.

Okay, I have a question (or two): If I can ever get the transom done, I am going to start laying/out stringers. I have 3/4 inch arauco ply (already purchased) for this. I was planning on joining the pieces for additional length using a joint like this:

images-1.jpg

So, 2 questions:

1. Is 3/4 ply sufficient for the stringers - Do I need to use 1 inch ply (or laminate half inch pieces together). I am already on my second batch of ply, so I need to use what I have if at all possible.

2. I am not a wood working guy. Is the above-type joint good for joining pieces for additional length. Is that type of joint even possible with ply given how it is made with the smaller laminates.

Thanks,
patrick

I think 3/4 should be a-OK...

Look for a type of wood joint called a scarf joint or a sister joint...

Here is the video Update:

I also took apart the remote so that I could remove the throttle and shift cables...and get it off of the old mount that I ripped out of the donor boat... Sort of found a dirty diaper in there.

Use a common butt joint on your stringers and then use 1/4" plywood glued and screwed to both sides to "Sister" them together. Titebonde III will do the trick. 8" overlap is good.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

I have a couple forums that I own myself I seen it after I started my restore thread here. To much head butting here that get's dragged into threads and should not happen . I know i should not post here as I am going against what I just said but had to say it . Also to much talk behind the scene with pms..being able to edit threads. The list goes on sorry .This place needs help . I know the owner of iboats didn't plan on this to happen but it is the nature of the beast on the internet and it is hard to fix . Myself I will stick to reading when needed. Thanks for all the great info here by all, lot's of good projects.

Cheers
Jack
the forum is a mess, merged threads, guys being jerks, (no names mentioned) catching up on the mod forum.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

rock and roll dude.

your doing great....

at 821 when you are talking about air bubbles......there is one you point to.....in the fillet.

patrick......just dont sweat thoes.....they are going to happen.....get em if you can, but dont loose sleep over them.

they are in every boat.......even from the factory.

they will be totally sealed in fiberglass,,,,,,and there is not too many.
if you had air every 1/8th inch along the fillett.....that would mean you would not have bonded.....therefore the glass would have to be re ground,,and new glass layed.
but it isnt any where near that bad.....in fact, it looks really, really good.

Someone once said - "pain and misery"!!

It was elsewhere & I needed to get it out to the masses.

The video is taking forever to load, so I'll just run on about some BS:

Hey, where ya putting the batt-trees? Gonna put some captain's call exhaust on the new motor?

Sorry, late diagnosis ADHD, I'm going to go back & watch the vid now. Thanks

Thanks Oops!, I know you are real busy right now. I appreciate you taking the time to watch the vid and review the work. It gives me a little confidence to move on to the next step having some experienced folks watch and let me know I am on the right track.

That's funny... :) Batts are going in the back on either side of the dog-house. No captain's call - I'll leave that to the big block guys who have real growlers... My 5.7 is by no means a wimp, but I fear it would sound like a lawn-mower or a high-flying cessna.

P.S. what happens in the starcraft playhouse (I know where you have been handing out), stays in the starcraft playhouse... At least post your tinny in the resto forum so all of your old glasser buddies who don't have admission privileges can watch along. or, are you sitting on their side of the cafeteria full time now?

I'm hopefully headed out to the shop late afternoon today. Then, I hope to have breakfast with my dad, his neighbor and Robert in the a.m. and take them all out to see the boat. Should be fun.

It seems like I will have 2 boats not getting redone---- Out of town til next week. I won't be forgetting my FireFlite or my 'glasser heritage. And I edited my earlier post about pain & misery.... All the Kool Aide fumes had me not thinking clearly..... It turns out the Kool Aid initiation is less like drinking from a hallowed chalise & more like an iced 5'er of Gator Aide celebration post football game win.... Still got the funny robes, foil hats, and the candles too, though:eek:.

And I pledge to stand idly by, and harrass, encourage, poke fun at & assist in any way I can, my Tin & 'Glass brothers equally
:)

Except for the boat trip, that sounds very similar to my plans Sat w/ mine!

Is your dad's neighbor handy w/ a girly man bubble roller & do you have enough Tyvek suits & respirators to make some major progress w/ all the extra hands?

Have a great weekend & let us know when you start putting the kart back together, pix & vids expected!

Thanks for the compliments, but let's not get carried away... And, yes, I was thinking that would be a good noise for sleep machine... Nice and soothing...

So, for the good news today; My supplemental shipment of goodies arrived; the back of my car with:

goodies.jpg

More resin; micro-balloons; 2 gallons cabosil; fairing compound; chopped strand fibers, MekP and dispenser and most, importantly, I graduated to a real non-girly bubble roller.

Now, for the front of my car:

wreck.jpg

.... and the wreck I got into about 15 minutes after picking this up. No one was hurt and after a couple of decades of insurance premiums we finally get to use it, so all's well.
