Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Decker, JBC, rrumba - thanks for stopping by (even if only to harass me a little).

Well, GT1M was just about right on the money.... Got the estimate today - 3306. Fortunately, I only have to pay 500 of that (deductible). I am sporting a chevy impala for the next couple of weeks, which I must say is not a bad little ride (I am just not used to driving a car, so I feel like my butt is on the ground).

Okay, guys, I am starting to day-dream a bit about the boat, and need for you guys to let me know your thoughts on something (i.e. talk me off the cliff). I am really bugged by the amount of wasted space on the bow area of my run-about. With my big family, I am really thinking of doing some chopping and converting that to open bow seating. I could just cut the deck - build some wooden seats - glass them in, throw some vinyl cushions up there.... The only thing up there right now is the above-deck gas tank. I need some weight up there in the front, but could probably do a sub-deck gas tank closer to the bow.

Thoughts? If you guys tell me this is crazy, then I'll just leave it as is and just make it sort of s show-piece up there with the teak rails, the horn, etc...

Thanks - all opinions welcome.... I need to either run with this idea or shut it down quickly....

Edit: Here are some pics to help with the analysis:

I'm waiting for your 1st 3 vids to load, I know what it looks like gutted, but wanted to 'see' it again.

BTW, your mentor will offer to lend you a left handed boat stretcher. Hold out for:

I-phone 4 (in the pocket)... It takes better video than my camera. I have a pretty cool one going down big drop on splash mountain too.

Agreed, don't do it!

Not a fan of the faux wood 'panels' under the bow, but it is nice looking from the front, in your 1st shot above, just as Chris Craft built her.

Besides, just thinking of redoing a closed bow that big, into an open bow w/ seats, gives me a mean case of the itchy & scratchies.

+1 on the "shut 'er down"

you take away the classic look of her and that would be a shame. kinda like giving your car an unnecessary facelift....... :D

storage, man
build in storage up there, think about the admiral and the rest of the family.
you allready know how much they take "anywhere"
how much stuff are you gonna be able to hide?
besides the classic show you'll put on
protection from the weather, leads to extended boating season:D

but honestly it sounds like your gettin more comfortable with the fab work
great progress
and not scarred at all bout the "itch" (cetaphil must work great:cool:)lol
so get this one done
and grab your next bowrider project

I have to say, you need to finish the the work already started and get a boat more suited for your family, hahaha, just kidding. I love the classic looks of the lancers with the closed bow, but on the 19 it is wasted space, so I vote yes. Tear er up man! Just plan on spending the next two years finishing her up if you do!!

I would finish what you have started and then enjoy the boat with it the way it is, then make your decision later, maybe next winters project. The other thing is it is a much more sea worthy boat compared to an open bow. You will be glad you have the closed bow if caught in some rough stuff.

If you do open it up, storage can be put under each seat ,porta potty under cushion in middle and fuel tank moved towards the stern a bit into the floor.

Leave er be my friend;)

I'm with lil buggy, storage. You know you'll need to carry a mountain of stuff with you to the lake.

...and if you are anything like me, you'll be saying...

"Seriously guys, do we really need ALL of this stuff?"

Your wife will say choice words to you...

Then you will say...

"Ok, ok, just throw it up under the bow there so it's not rolling around while we are underway. Let's ride!:D"

OK, I am uncoiling the rope, grab one end, tie it around your waist and hang on...I'll have my horse pull you back from the edge of the cliff...

As "Frankie Goes To Holywood" sang..."Relax! Don't Do It!"

Just think...you did not remove the cap, to avoid any EXTRA, UNNESSECARY work...
'nuf said...

and to quote another, 'fine' Southern 'gentleman'..."Git'r'Dun!":D

OH yeah, and thanks for taking us along on the test drive...it was nice to see what I missed...I have been to Epcot, I don't know how many times, and have never been on it...usually because the line was too long, and I tend to drive much faster and much more aggresively than that ride could ever take me, so I would just head off to the English Pub...

Oh and I don't know how Body Shops work up in them there parts, but down here, you gotta double and even triple the amount of time they say its gonna take to fix it...

Have a Great upcoming weekend!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

The solution is not to buy a closed bow in the first place. You certainly don't buy one with an I/O let alone an OMC

Seriously though, I don't think cutting into the bow would be a good idea.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

That's what the 2nd boat is for...... Provide whatever the 1st doesn't....

Better to fish from

Smaller & safer to let the kids pilot

Better for running around, instead of cruising

To get to do all the 'fun' stuff everyone talks about over in their threads: Pulling the cap, building a cap cradle, heavy personalized customization, extra work, extra glass work, etc....

PMC to Mrs. PMC:
I found this junkie old Tinny w/ a good motor, I need to find a 'good' boat (the more: beautiful, seaworthy, elegant, common, socially accepted, politically correct, much easier to get chicks in [you may want to redact this glasser 'benefit'], nicer, fiberglass boat) to put it on. It was a screaming deal. It was a most Jasoutside-like bottom feeder price. No, he's the 1 w/ 2 boats & threads in Michigan that I follow. No, I don't want a 2nd boat just so he'll like me better or to be more like him. He accepts me for the white shimmery powder sprinkled 'glasser I am. Besides, I got this great big ole shop to fill w/ boats.:D

Any further assistance you need please don't hesitate to ask. The whole time I was typing this ^^^, eHarmony music played in my head.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

PMC,

First time I've interjected in your rebuilt thread; however, have been following for awhile...I must say I like the the progress and quality (all of which are beyond my level of expertise!)!

As far as cutting in an open bow...I love having one and was leaning that way for you, but after reading all the comments and what jbcurt wrote, I think the 2nd boat (MBS, as most put it is inevitable for you too!?) would be the way to go. I like the idea of staying focused on getting this Lancer in the water by this summer or at least as soon as possible? It will keep the Mrs. on your good side, and it will be good for the soul. Adding an additional project will have weeks, if not months, to the project and delay the family's enjoyment! Besides, to keep jasoutside happy, I think a tinny is in your future! (As full disclaimer: I loved your post to another new boater in regards to the starmada and them handing out pamphlets...funniest thing I've read!)

In the latest pics I was reminded of the white stripes and the color blue of the boat...what are your plans for paint? I think you should keep the stripes (yet another reason to keep the closed bow!). I love the look of it and have thought about adding some vinyl ones to mine...I don't know just looks sporty!

Strong Work!

Now, that's just picking on the new kid... I love my boat and have no regrets, but man was I sure clueless about what I was getting into.

You guys are awesome! You gave me the right answer and made me laugh at the same time.. Decision made! True to the original she will stay. Less work on an already tough project is also a bonus!

Crisis averted: the first responders have folded up the catch trampoline and the fire trucks are pulling away... Carry on folks, the jumper is safe and will be released from custody after psych evaluation.
