It's fun to see your boy working that roller and helping out. I'd post a video of my boys helping me, but they're in their late 20's and are not nearly so entertaining anymore. Enjoy it while it lasts, Sir!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Hey guys:
Sorry I have not updated in awhile... The boat is still very much a top priority, but a few spring-time pleasures have gotten in the way.... (primarily fishing)....

Had the good fortune of doing some off-shore fishing this past weekend... Our rig was a custom-built Freeman sportfishing Cat, which I must say was one of the best boats I have ever ridden in... Every ounce of this boat was built with attention to detail and with one purpose in mind: Hard core fishing....

Outboat-thepalehorse.jpg

The twin Yammy (4 stroke) 350s provided some good power....

...the end result of the day....

Yes, I caught the big boy....

The gulf appears to have made a miraculous recovery from last year's oil spill, although a lot of the in-shore stuff (crabbing, oysters) has suffered pretty bad....

We are going out of town this weekend to spend Easter with my wife's family, but I plan on getting out to the boat once (if not twice) mid-week.... I am motivated for some serious progress in the next few weeks... Hang in there... boat restoration will resume very quickly...

....Getting called to dinner (fresh tuna and mahi mahi...yummmmmy).....

Wow Pmc, looks like one heck of a good time! I haven't done much offshore sport fishing just inshore salt water. When I was a teenager I did work on shrimp boats and snapper commercial fishing boats offshore. That is until we were out 90 miles off mayport jetties and the snapper boat nearly sunk on us! That was the last time I went out that far!
Great to see you enjoying the family time!

Man, those are some nice looking fish! I am just over in Daphne, Alabama (Mobile Bay) this week visiting my brother during the kid's spring break. I think I need to talk him into getting a boat... he is a naval architect/engineer working at a shipyard after all. So anyhow, I guess we can be patient for a few days more until you post pics following your mid-week session. Have fun. ;-)

Very familiar with that area... Eastern Shore (Daphne/Fairhope) of L.A. (lower alabama) is one of my favorite places... The redfish in my avatar was caught in Wolf Bay about 30 mins from Daphne... so, yes, I agree, your brother needs a boat... Hopefully you can get some fishing in while you are there...

I thought you & Jas were having a somewhat friendly rivalry for the 'man' competitions. This photo makes it seem more like buddy-buddy BFF's rivalry (NOT the WOG type of BF...):D

Really nice looking rig, nice score getting a trip to fish from it. And definitely a nice catch. Dinner tonight?

Strange how motivating a good break from the boat work results in a new dedication & real urge to get back to work on the project boat.

Nice to spend quality time w/ the real family too. Not just the iBoat family & friends:)

Wow, I just can,t believe that a man could just take off all his grinding gear, goggles, respirator, long sleves, gloves, long pants and put down his gringer and leave his nasty ole shop just to go out in shorts on a awesome boat to go and catch all those great looking fish.

What is this world coming too. (LOL)

Great looking fishing trip. After all the excellent hard work you put in on the transom, You deserve a quailty break. ;)

Ohhman, now your talking my language!!!! There is one reason alone that I bought my boat, and that is to get it bloody with tuna blood eventually. Hoping to trailer down to alabama area when I have the funds for a couple weeks of offshore stuff.

Grew up landing big tuna, dolphin, shark, etc etc. Can't wait to get back to the coast and tear it up. When is the best time for tuna down there?

My best recipe for tuna is marinate in paul newmans own oil and vinagar over night, bake in marinade until almost done, then flash across grill for a couple minutes. YUM! YUM! YUM!

Those freemans are awesome boats. great trip and catch!!!

Nothing like it is there...Just awesome... You can catch them pretty much all year (the guides run about 180 days a/year), but early spring is the best... the Tuna get gradually smaller throughout the spring and summer season..., but the Mahi (the bigger ones) show up a little later, so its a trade.... That Tuna in the pic was 90 lbs... the record for our boat was about 240. We had 16 guys (4 boats) - and one of the other boats caught and tagged a 250 lb. blue marlin... NICE!!

I took some of the fatty part of the tuna steaks that a lot of folks throw out and made some home-made tuna salad for sandwiches... You talk about good.... Wow...

Hoping to get out to the boat today to starting cutting my stringers... Wish me luck

There really isn't anything like it, my dad and I use to go every year out of Montauk Long Island in late october to late november. There big up there. We have caught them up to 400 pounds. I love mahi because of the way they fly out of the water with there acrobatics, but nothing beats being peeled off 8 or 9 times by a 350 pound blue fin or yellow fin tuna. Amazing fish and all meat, one good fish use to pack our freezer for a year.

I have seen giants that looked like barn doors 200 yards out off a stand up charter. Never landed it but at one point had 3 reels spliced in the water. There are giants out there deep in the canyons.:D I miss the coast so much, need to get down there soon and get offshore. Been along time. A 5 pound bass just doesn't cut it. lol

Good luck with the stringers!:D

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Okay: I cut and fitted all of about 3 boards last night before I got a little stumped:

enginemounts.jpg

My boat is not really sitting level in the cradles... So when "test fitting" these, I am worried about them being off if I just test for level without factoring in the way the boat is angled in the cradles relative to level.... (

I can't really use a speed square because the hull is not flat. So, how do install these without creating a mess? I was thinking about just hanging my boards from the side supports on the gunnels with a brad nail as shown in the above pic above leaving a 1/4 separation at the bottom for peanut butter.... Seems like that should work if these side supports are true to one another....(meaning level to one another when the boat is level)....

Thoughts?

Also, somehow my key-hole is not directly centered in the transom piece... A little odd, but not too concerned about it unless you think I should be... Basically, one side of the engine mount is about an 1.5 inches closer to the transom board... You can sort of see it in the pic...

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

string line the aft deck height.

then measure the distance from the hull to the string.

the deck is usually higher than the chine in the aft area.....so use the deck height as your measuring point.

normally you would measure inner chine to inner chine. and add or subtract for the deck.

there should still be some grinding indications of the old deck height.

if you have no indications left......use your past measurements as a starting point, and make a new deck height.

you will be close enough that it wont make a difference.
