Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Well, the starcraft went to play with the other rotten glassers in the sky this morning.

She was a really good donor and provided the following:

1. 350 magnum with no cracks and good compression.
2. Alpha 1 - gen II outdrive with stainless prop.
3. Nice 45 gallon gas tank.
4. Filler Hose
5. Vent Hose
6. A set of quicksilver gauges
7. Steering assembly.
8. Controls
9. Miscellaneous hardware (seat pedestals, cleats, a swim ladder).
10. A teek ski locker cover
11. A nice captain's chair..
12. A switch panel.
13. A nice trailer that is about be refurbed and sold.

.... Rest in peace oh bountiful giver of boat power and paraphernalia.

Yeah, we euthanized a glasser (affectionately known as "rotten pleasure" and also by the alias "keel fungus") but it was the humane thing to do...

The guy at the landfill gate asked "why you are getting rid of that boat? Does it leak?" I replied "umm, yeah,,, it sort of has the back ripped out of it." He said, "why don't you take it over to the salvage yard?" I said, "take look a little closer buddy...its fiberglass, not metal."

Figured you tinny guys would get a kick out of that... At least your boats have scrap value.

Hey, your boat & Jas's boat(s) can now hang together in perpetuity, and watch their hearts & souls breathe life into the current project(s):D

Not quite there, yet, my friend... From an ownership/enjoyment/use perspective, i prefer fiberglass boats.... That being said, if I ever do another restoration project (and that's a big if)...it would probably be an outboard, tinny... [yes, I just said that out loud]... although I'm not ruling out a woody project either... (funds permitting)..

Yeah, I picture them playing in the big lake in the sky all young again with new gel coat, new vinyl and - instead of wings - I'm thinking they are now outfitted with big block power and bravo outdrives....

That last bit about a wooden boat sounds fabulous. All I need is the t-shirt:) Although it's not the sexy mahogany runabout I'm ill-equipped to complete...

Bear, thanks for stopping by... Man, that Cobalt drive took you off the grid for awhile.. Hope you won that battle!

So, here is where I am... Oops said, I could get the stringers done in 8 hours... Yeah, I've sort of blown that goal... I would have been fired about 5 months ago if I was in a production line... It is sort of frustrating not see more progress - especially since my glassin friends (sphelps, Trooper82 and GT100000) have geared it into overdrive and are flying past me... I think once I get the deck in, get it foamed, flip it and paint it, then I'm going to put it back on the roller trailer and bring it home... I imagine I'll move faster through the finishing stages being able to work on it at home.

Dang PM, glad to see you at least remembered that you had a boat to restore and a huge gaggle of fans and onlookers just going nuts for some tidbit of information and a smidge of an update...:p:D

Hope all is well with you and yours, can't wait to see what you end up with as far as the fuel tank...

Stringers are looking good...I think you could get away with a couple of crosswise bulkheads in the front area for additional strength and rigidity, especially if you end up mounting the tank up there...but you'll prolly be fine without anything extra also...

Make sure you keep a rag stuffed into the intake manifold while the carb is off of there to prevent any unwanted debris from falling in there...

Best regards,
GT

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

forget the forward stringer sistering...even if you put the tank forward you wont need the additional wood.

and .......that mounting plate......do you have a pic of that?....

i think it caused some vaccume leaks.......it would be really hard to get a seal with it there....it should go on top of the carb base....not under.

the seal for the carb must be correct.

so manifold.....gasket.....carb....mounting plate.....nuts

Yes, the mounting plate was on top of the carb...not under.. bad explanation on my part...

Wood, Little man has been very patient on the go-kart... I have to get to that soon... I may start a separate blog so you guys can follow along and help me out.

Have'nt chimmed in a while but been following allong. One ? when I see everyone re-doing thier decks and stringers why is thier no consideration taken to the amount of room you leave yourselves in the engine compartment especially with a V-8 I'm not critisizing your work but for limited amount of room you have to work after it's all said and done would it not have been easier to make a dog house seat lid with pneumatic assist cylinders? thus leaving a large internal area for storage and work space for such things as pug and oil changes just to mention a few. But anyhow keep on keepin on.

Fanny... thanks for stopping by... I gave this a lot of consideration. You may recall waaaay back in the first 5 or 6 pages I was thinking about building a sun-duck (large dog house) with seating in front of it... The sun deck part would lift up like a hatch and the seating would be right in front of that.... Although its a viable option, I did not like the fact that it ate up most of deck space and made the boat looked cramped. (i have a closed bow, with no seating up front and a big family, so space is a premium...) So, I opted for the original configuration which was a simple dog house with two jump seats on either side of it... Plenty of access to reach what you need, plus it gives me two extra seats and saves a bunch of deck space...

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Glad to see you back at it again. Good vid. Enjoy watching.
If I were there I would put some tape over the intake holes. Don't want any glass dust or bolts and nuts
down in the motor. To bad about the gas tank not fitting. It's always the nick picking things that make
this work go slow.
It all looks good.

Great update, 1X12 stringers look great, straight & tidy:) Doubled w/ ply will certainly make covering them easier when wider. Seems like the typical iBoats mishmash of clamps. I have a very similar set.

Am I seeing things or did the carb gasket not seem to be a real good fit when you showed the rust inside the intake manifold on the video?

Go kart blog, well alrighty, I'm in for that ride too

Have a great week!
