its only when you have cut a hole in the hull that you didnt mean to do you get to join the boat building club. cutting in to your live well gets you a temp membership badge. start with a 3 of 2x6 the running 90 degrees to the bunks then build up from there red yellow and purple (high on the purple as that will keep the sides straight)

Re: How would you recommend starting stringer Replacement

Ok, I read a thread where oops told them how to get the boat of the trailer by just lowering and raising the front so I am going to try that. My question would be where to brace the hull at, and Should I do brace it the entire length of the boat?

Here is a pic Do I brace all locations?

did someone cut your trailer and add in a piece of wood?

Are my eyes seeing a 2x4 being used as a rear cross member on that trailer? And not even bolted in place? Yikes!

Re: How would you recommend starting stringer Replacement

The trailer was cut, I would probably say because it was not made for this boat. The trailer is 28 feet long with a 18 ft boat on it. They did provide me with the piece that was cut out so I can weld back on. since I have my own welder I'm not worried about it. The wood is only there to help hold the cover down. I am going to sell the trailer and find one the right length.

run 2X6's left to right under the boat, stood on the 2" (1.5") edge with the crown up 1 up front under the bow curve somewhere, 1 under the transom, and 1 in between, for a total of 3 run across the width, and 1 on either side to frame them in:

Ok, So here is what I came up with, but I think this is even more then you said. I would rather go cheaper so If I can change or remove somestuff that would be awesome. I was also thinking for doing only the blue in 2x6 and the rest 2x4. your thoughts?

Essentially, my drawing is designed for the casters so you can easily move it around, and supports yours:D

Page thru Andgott Lake & sea thread, or WOG's Blue Flamingo thread. They have great cradles for comparison.

I want casters also just wasn't sure if it was a possibility. I will look at those threads and see what I can find

Re: How would you recommend starting stringer Replacement

Ok, today I was able to get wood for the cradle, I was also able to get some casters as well, I will start construction tomorrow. I am hoping that this weekend I can get the boat completely stripped. Assuming that other plans do not come up.

I am hoping that I can get the transom to disconnect from the wood in the back without having to cut the splash well. I have never glassed before so I really don't want to make it where people are going to be able to see my first glass job. Anyway updates will begin again tomorrow.

Same reason I choose to take the cap off the FireFlite.

But this makes for a great conversation piece! Can see it now.. Hey man was that the best glassing job they could do from the factory?! Only to get to say... NO theirs was worse... That's why I rebuilt it myself from the hull up and made it 100% better!
But on a serious note... I actually left mine on the trailer and supported it using wood clamped between the cross members and hull... Probably frown upon but it has worked fine for me. Only thing I didn't do was support up the sides but so far Ive had no issues... Good luck with the cradle and rebuild! The whole rebuilding seems overwhelming at first but it's really not that bad. Measurements and photos are your friend!

Re: How would you recommend starting stringer Replacement

its a bass boat so fixing the spash well isnt to bad to repair or replace. the great thing with a glitter boat is that the glitter will break the eye line so as long as the colors are real close the glitter will tie in the repair. if you do decied to cut the splash well just think about where you are going to feather it before you cut or you will end in a place a grinder wont fit then its slow going with a dremel.
i rebuilt mine on the trailer and added extra bunks for surport but i would not recommend that unless you have a real reason as you will constantly have to keep measuring and adjusting as the boat likes to slip on the bunks when you walk inside the hull and if you dont surport the side high enoght you will have to refit the top at least 5 times plus do some glass work with the top on to ensure you dont end up with the floor holding the sides in or out when glassed. i have no concrete to roll a frame on so the trailer seemed the best idea and with proper planning it could be done on the trailer. i think playing it save and making a wood frame is the way to go plus it will save time later in the project especially if you add a rail thats higher than the rim of the boat but set out of the way of the top then you can put a straight edge across the boat and use that as a measuring guide. by marking the rail you can measure down to the top of the stringers at set points as they realy are a pain to get set correctly. a few weeks work now can save months of work later.

Re: How would you recommend starting stringer Replacement

Well I may be trying to complicate the simple here, I have been making designs all night of exactly how I wanted to build the frame with casters. I am using all 2x6's as I got 20 of them 12' long for 60 bucks. So I was going to make 2 rolling frames and then one to sit under the middle. Should I be worried about 2 2x6's running the length of the boat or will the 3 spots be ok. I was also thinkign about just running 2 2x6's from the back brace to the middle brace. I just didn't want to waste all the wood. I still have to make a crane to lift the cap off. This is just for under the boat. I have not decided how to build the outside one yet.

Re: How would you recommend starting stringer Replacement

Can you post a pic of a side view of your boat as it sits on your trailer? Preferrable from about 10' away and from about a 45? angle. This would help determine the best way to construct a proper cradle for the boat. Also a pic of the rear of the boat and how it sits on the trailer with the bunks. Thanks.:)

Here you go I hope this helps, I tried to go through your thread WOG, But I only saw what looked more like a giant dolly. I was not sure If I missed the cradle. So I really appreciate your help. I also saw angotts cradle also, his was cool because he made it to where he could pull his boat off the trailer onto his. Kinda liked that Idea also.

I hope this drawing makes sense.

multibunkcradle.jpg

I would position the bunks on the cradle so the would fit approximately where the bunks fit on the trailer now and on the outer strake of the boat. That will give the optimum support of the boat during restoration. Carpet the bunks and you should be good to go. That's my 2? worth!;)

Re: How would you recommend starting stringer Replacement

Not really. Just take Really good measurements, now, and then, when you're ready to tab in the floor make sure the measurements remain the same so the cap will fit back on. Once the floor is tabbed in there's no going back. It MUST be exact. If you make the cradle like shown you should'nt have any issues. That boat hull is a pretty good design.

Re: How would you recommend starting stringer Replacement

Ok Back into the boat, I was really sick so I was unable to get anything accomplished. Will never eat at Taco Bell again.

Anyways, So I am about to put the boat on the cradles that I have made. I will post pics of them shortly to make sure that they are adequate. I Made 2 separate cradles almost exactly like the design above from WOG. The 2x6's are 25" that will hold the hull up. I have the outside bunks setup to set on the outside strakes (I think thats what they are called). The inside ones are setup to be on the strakes next to that, and I have one little one that will sit directly under the transom to help get the boat off the trailer.

Again I will post pics soon, I have to run into work, So Ill be home soon
