Re: merc500 1973

Thanks Wessel I know Plum silly, Wessel but this peet guy is mixing things up. Like I never told Alex to pull his plug wires when he sets his timing. I try to help anybody I can here at iboats. Peet is acting like a troll.
What upset me is that he recommended any other boating forum other than iboats. Tim

Re: merc500 1973

Pinkfloyd: I didn't say mix all fuel at 100:1 but only if your engine uses 50:1 mix can you do so, and only if you use synthetic 2 stroke oil such as Amsoil or RedLine Synthetic 2 stroke oil. Pinkfloyd I would say you mis read this post as I do use 100:1 fuel/oil mix in my outboards and since 1973 and have never and I mean never destroyed any of my outboards. I for one use it and have never had any of my outboards in for blown pistons or in need of rebuilding!

Help is here, help me help you!

Read & Believe!!

Merc!!!

Re: merc500 1973

Alex, if your motor is a crossflow you set it at 34 degrees max advance. Post your serial# and I can check for sure on that setting. Tim

Re: merc500 1973

Alex peet/merc is right about your switchbox if you set the timing with the plugs out. I don't pull the plugs when I set the timimg nor did I tell you to. You said you pulled your plugs before I just took it for granite that you knew to ground the plug wires then. The way I set it is with the plugs in at cranking speed( Just out of fuel) sorry if I have confused you in any way. Tim

Re: merc500 1973

Alex: I have an Aunt and Uncle in Etobicoke around the Bloor Street and Islington Ave area I've been to the Toronto area a lot when I was a kid and still look forward too going there, it is real fine country in Ontario much like here in Wisconsin but a little less industrial and water is very clean you can drink water out of the tap up there and it tastes real good. I will be in the Toronto area the week end of your Thanks Giving which is this week end coming of the 8th 9th and 10th of October and I am really looking forward to my trip to Canada as I always do! Oh Happy Thanks Giving My Canadian Friend!!

P.S. Alex the reson I pull the spark plugs is that you need a minimum cranking RPM of 300 any less than this and you can't set the timing, but with the plugs out and the throttle set in the full advance position there is no reason for the cranking RPM to be below 300 as long as you have a full charge battery be for starting the procedure, correct me if I'm wrong "Tim"!!

Tim: Were stronger together, than against each other!!

Help is here, help "Tim" and I help you!

Read & Believe!!

Merc!!!

Re: merc500 1973

Alex: Now lets take this back to the very begining you're very first post. After you cleaned you're carbs if you put the carburetors back on and positioned the throttle cam incorrectly this would open the throttle near a full open condition and your outboard would REV up out of control, and by the sound of it this what is happening????

Merc!!!

Re: merc500 1973

Alex: I have been to Canada, Ontario to be exact so much over my lifetime I almost could have a dual citizenship but when I do cross the border I just don't feel like I have crossed into another country. Ontario, Toronto just feels like home to me, except the fresh air and water the people are quiet and very polite there are suttle differences! Love going there my parents had a cottage on Lake Simcoe for 30 some odd years, let me tell you wish we still had it though. Am I Canadian when I'm there I do feel like I belong and you know one day I may even retire their. But no Wisconsin USA is my home!!
Now fill me in where you stand with your outboard, my Canadian Friend!!!!

Merc!!!

Re: merc500 1973

crem1, I certainly can sympathize with you on the lack of response to this thread. I personally am not going to get involved in the pi$$ing match and think that may have much to do with your lack of responses, but most people don't want to get involved in the he said, she said crap that is going on.
The only advice that I can give you is that although the compression differences don't help the running of the engine, it sounds to me like you may have caused most of your problem with your tinkering. Get a Mercury Manual and use it, I have been working on Mercurys since 1961 and still use the manuals daily, without them one is lost, don't try to cut corners IT DOESNT WORK--Bob

Re: merc500 1973

Laddies recommendation to get a MERC manual is a good one but it doesn't solve the whole problem, it helps, but it's not a cure all, especially if one is not mechanically inclined. I think most of the people that access this site probably feel the same way as I do. If the manual was that adequate then nobody would be trying to get help on this website except the people that can't afford the manuals in the first place but then what are they doing with a boat and motor?
Thanks for listening
Alex

Re: merc500 1973

Hi MercMaster!
"I noticed that I have a hairline crack in the IDLE TUBE from bottom to about 3/4 up. Is that tolerable?"
This is an exerpt from a posting on another website.
Having just finished doing a fuel pump replacement I proceeded to do a thorough carb cleaning. Dismantling one of the carbs I found the above observation. Took me a little while to find a used IDLE TUBE.
Never got an answer as to how important or unimportant is a cracked IDLE TUBE

Alex

Re: merc500 1973

When looking from the top, the Idle tube is adjacent to the throttle shaft. You can see a thin round tube running vertically when looking at the carburator opening(mouth)
Best I can do MercMaster in the description department.
Thanks
Alex
