Re: merc500 1973

Tim: What's the matter, looks like you have been on track maybe a little to Hi Tech for persons who need it explained a little better, so they will understand if you take the time, remember you and I understand most terms that others may not! Just take a little more time in explaining details. We don't need our friends North of the border from putting them selves in Dangerous situations. Tim the outboard does need to be under load and in forward gear!!!

Help is here, help me help you!

Read & Believe!!

Merc!!!

Re: merc500 1973

Hi Guys!

Theoretically speaking if I know that in my present situation, i.e I get at full throttle and forward gear, medium speed and 4100 RPM's.
That being, I could make a turn clockwise on the MAX ADVANCE SCREW while the boat is stationary. Then I could put it to test and see what speed I'm getting and RPM's or does it have to be under load while I'm adjusting the screw.
YES?
Alex

Re: merc500 1973

Alex, No it does not have under a load when you turn it. It can be done that way. Try it in 1/2 turns at a time. Tim

Re: merc500 1973

Tim.....I know that I have never ever seeen any one on these forums try harder than you are too help crem......and you deserve alot of credit for doing so...but with that being said...dont you think after 80 plus replies in a single thread that maybe crem should consider taking his unit to a local mechanic?? Im just as frustrated as anyone after following this thread and that is honestly with respect too all involved what I would do....Im not trolling or highjacking a thread....I think that this is a very solid solution too help crem get his unit up and running so he can have a great time out on the water..If I am out of line in any way then please let me know what I can say or do too help resolve this matter in a positive way.

Re: merc500 1973

Champ: Well with that all said and done, if you've been following the thread for that long I would think you would have a little more input by now in helping "Alex" by now. So whats taken you so long to speak up, seeing how much you like "Carl" so much, and you like boat racing, it sounds like you have been around the "Towers of Power" for a while, mean you're going to shove a little dirt at "Tim". Then you're not at least going to offer any help too him or a comment to "Alex"!
That seems hardly fair, when I came too this forum I took a strip out of "Tim" but at least I was hoping too help and not hinder and I commented to "Alex" and offered my opinon and help from my very first post! Champ it's your turn too speak up at least "Tim" is in deed trying more than what you're offering!!!!!!
I say put up or shut up!

Help is here, help "Tim and I help you!

Read & Believe!!

Merc!!!

Re: merc500 1973

dsrchamp, I would think that Alex can't find a local shop to help him,I have seen that many times before with a older outboard or it may be a case like it will take 4-6 weeks before they can even look at it for him and or maybe his wife will not let him spend any money on that old boat as she may call it.
Or just don't have the money to take it to a shop.
Whatever the case.
Yes this is a long post but I can't quit him now or even think about it.
Sure I wish he had it going a long time ago!
It looks like maybe MercMaster can come to his rescue in the near future he may be in his area soon and said he would stop by and help him. Untill then I'll do whatever I can to help him. That what this forum is for. Tim

Re: merc500 1973

Dsrchamp04's reasons for surfing the internet for boat help are pretty evident, he wants to get the best marine mechanic that money can buy.
Thanks for your input

Alex

Re: merc500 1973

Well guys it's time to say thanks for all your help and patience. I think, finally, we resolved all the problems that the engine threw our way. Engine is performing beatifully and the last Max Spark advance yielded 5100 RPM's at max throttle. The solution is there it's just a matter of time and bits of adjustment.
The only question left is prop pitch. My prop is 11 for a 14.6' Cadorette boat, should I try another pitch to get more speed.

Thanks

Alex

P.S. MercMechanic or Tim can phone me or e-mail me at my place of work if you guys are so inclined. We can have a gabfest on fishing and honing.
905-795-9666 EXT 241

Re: merc500 1973

Alex, I'm still concerned about your compression.
Next thing you should do is run another check and post your results and see what mercmaster or one of the experts has to say about it. (If it is still low.) I would think with a 11p prop it should hit 5400-5800 rpm's. Maybe I'm wrong! but I don't think the prop is your rpm problem.
Good Luck, Tim

P.S. Thanks for the Thanks....
