Use a spray bottle with a tablespoon of dishwashing soap in it for lube. Spray it on the overspray and then tear off a hunk of the clay and start rubbing on the overspray. As it begins to dry it will start to lift or "Erase" the overspray off the slick surface of the paint.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Tried the clay bar today and this is what happened:

This is what I was trying to remove:
overspray.jpg

I mixed dish soap with water and put on a generous amount:

Used the clay bar and kept rubbing until the soapy water was gone. I found that the clay was really hard to knead ..... it was very stiff:

Maybe this bar wasn't what it should be but it didn't take off the over spray:

I wiped it with a little Acetone and it took it right off:

Isn't that clay supposed to soften when you knead it? Slightly? Too soapy? Is that possible?

I think it's only supposed to be a very small amount of soap mixed w/ a generous amount of water. A regular sized misting bottle mostly full of water w/ only like 2 or 3 drops of soap. I think there is supposed to be a very minute amount of friction between clay & paint. Based on the bubbles, I'd guess too much soap & too wet...... That's my take away from the video that WOG posted from the redneck fella....

Anyway, it looks like you got the over-spray off w/ the acetone. Maybe the good underlying paint had cured enough & the overspray was mostly dry (little adhesion) when it settled on the good paint. W/ too much pressure on the rag w/ acetone, thinner or whatever, initially it tends to only loose the sheen in the area you rub down, when you use it to remove surface blemishes. Go too far & it will start to remove the paint.

The area you cleaned looks great!

Have a good week!

Possibly a BIT to much soapy water but, no matter, it's clean! I've still got some overspray on my truck that I need to remove. I'll try and take a video of that so you can see how it works.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I think I did have a bit too much soap at first but I kept rubbing until it was dry. That clay was really stiff and didn't soften up very much while I was using it. It seemed like it made the over spray .... I don't know how to describe it ..... kind of looked like a smudge mark rather then over spray. You know when sometimes you try to erase pencil off of paper and it kind of leaves a black smudge mark. That's what it looked like. I honestly think that the clay was old or something because of how stiff it was. I put a very small amount of Acetone on a rag and just lightly rubbed it on the hull and it took the over spray off. I think the clay helped the Acetone take it off so easily. I haven't given up on the clay yet ..... I am going to try it on my truck.

Yeah, my clay is pretty supple. Got it at Advanced Auto. $20 for the clay and the fluid.

If I knew how to post a video I would let you hear the sound coming from the speakers that I installed on the top of the cabinet. (the cabinet is just sitting there in the photo and not yet put into place). It is a marine system made by Pyle which uses your mp3 player. It has a waterproof pouch for your player so it doesn't get wet. It also comes with a volume control and an amp.

Now to put the cabinet into place and on to the carpet.

You have done such a fantastic job, I bet you can't wait to get it wet...you are getting sooooo close...
The stereo, I am sure sounds great, but not as good as the first time time you fire up the engine in the water, and go "YEEEEHAAA!!!"
