Re: OB vs IB

Where can you get that 115 for 750? I might be interested
Local Marina has a display Boat ( they do use it ) 26 ft with 3 - 300 Suzukis ans a 9.9 kicker Its a Ospray. Also the Imigration has a boat on the Canadian and Washington state Border with 4- 300 Suzukis and needless to say its very fast. all are on brackets. and a Coast Guard boat has a Aluminum with 4 suzuki 300s on display at the Seattle boat show they did remove the 50 Cal guns for display. They say it is as fast as you want to go.

Re: OB vs IB

I should have explained further, I was refering to an OB on a bracket, with the stern of the boat acting as the fulcrum point, a lighter weight OB setting further rearward will cause the stern to settle lower in the water. Where I normally operate my Islander there are a couple of 20-24' boats with OB brackets and they definately sit lower than my Islander.
In response to another post about OB being lower in initial cost, I have not found that to be true in any way. My research has shown that a 140 hp IO in a crate avgs 5-6000 dollars but a 140 hp OB 4 stroke is more than 12000 dollars. Not beating up the OB in any way, I love them until they get big....then the IO definately has the advantage. Thanks again for allowing my opinion.

5-6K for just the engine?? or does that include every thing?? i live near salt water and the I/O motors just do not hold up well..you can buy an I/O boat for about half or less than same boat with a outboard. when they get old I/O seems to be huge maintainance problems. the exhaust manifolds have to be changed every few years and they have continual leak problems and the bearings go bad regular..I just have had very bad experiences with I/O so I am a little prejudice. not that I havent done my share of maintenance on my outboards, but if you use over 10 year old boats/motors outboards seem to be the way to go from my limited experience.

If you are worried about an outboard's fuel consumption, go with a turbo diesel outboard. I bet they are reasonably priced.

You could run red off road diesel or fuel oil in it. Varies around here from $2.35 to $2.95 a gallon. Cheaper in the summer of course.
But you would still never make up for the initial cost of the motor.

If you run in salt water you could harpoon a whale, process the blubber and have all the free fuel you want.

Light weight 289 lbs
2 clamps and 4 bolts and the power plant is off.
A lot less moving parts between the engine and the prop
Debate as to lost space because of the outboard motor well. I use that space for the fuel tank, battery, lunch hook, toolbox, and tackle box. Got add some weight to the back to make up for the difference in weight between the I/O and the OB.

Be sides that is what I started with.

Re: OB vs IB

Full disclosure...

If I had a whole pile of money and didn't know what to do with it, I'd bolt a pair of these...

...on to one of these...

Obviously it would have to be a very big pile.:D

Oddly enough, I'd probably still want to just rebuild an old Islander/Chief hull though.

Cheers!

Re: OB vs IB

Since I just bought the Donzi I now have both I/O and OB boats I do have to say that i really like the OB better. The space issue is resolved with the OB bracket. I have much more deck space with the OB bracket not having the huge dog house. There just seems to be less to worry about with OB's. No gimble bearings, UJoints, 500 bellows that can tear, don't have to worry about running the drive to high. There are advantages to I/O's, some really good ones, I just prefer OB's (on a bracket). ;)

It looks to me like that would be a very simple installation on a 22 ft starcraft Holiday or a Islander.. Then rebuild the splaswell and enjoy the big back end with no restrictions.

Kelley went to the boat show in Seattle Today. Wow on the number of Aluminum boats with bracketed outboards on them. Many were Evenrude E-tec. Seems to be the in thing right now. Can not compare the newer Inboards with the old, as they are far superior in advancments. Three Rivers Mariena in Woodenville, Washington State. They have done several past conversions you might want to look them up on the Internet and do a phone call to them.. Told me it was a great improvment in performance but had some good suggestions on the designe and install of any brackets. Guess they learnd the hard way. They were Starcraft Dealers for years.

This is what I want, really bad. 18' Powercat 18C with twin 100 outboards. This is a catamaran design by Ray Ledger.
