Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

As we were having problems seeing through the rain on the windshield and the saltwater that left salt residue after drying on the windshield, I decided to try this product

Has anyone else tried using it? you apply it to the window, let it haze up and then wipe the haze off with a clean cloth or paper towel. This is the haze left on the window after drying

DSC05764.jpg

And this is what it looks like after wiping off the haze

DSC05765.jpg

It works beautifully, then rain showers just rolled off, and so did the saltwater. But you have to apply it every few days. So I am going to try this product in a liquid jug form, hopefully it works the same.

EDIT: see the plastic carrier attached to the vehicle, we were going to go under a low bridge earlier today and suddenly I hit the warning low overhead sign with the carrier....my gal got a good laugh out it and I had to back up as I would have ripped the carrier off going under the bridge.

Dave524,

I check my back mainframe/crossmember and it does not rotate. There are 2 bolts that anchor both sides of the crossmember. But the roller brackets work much better now that they tilt. It was worth a look though,
thanks
Rusty

Hmmmm, mine is a single bolt on each side, always tip it to about a 45 degree angle just before backing it in to recover the boat.

It rotates on the bolts that also hold the brackets for the rear tie down straps.

dang you canucks have low bridges! what's that, about 8'?

i used rainX for sevl years on my car with dead windshield wipers to avoid tearing into the dash. worked great in all but the worst downpours. do they say anything about using it on plexi/lexan? (i know you have glass windshield, just curious)

I have read but never tried the products, but lemon Pledge, Original Formula Honda, and Plexus are supposed to work well. Rain X is not supposed to be used on Lexon/Plexi as it will start to fog/haze after use.

Yeah, I knew I would be eating some "humble-berry pie" after posting the low over sign incident. My gal just another chuckle after reading that posting.

I don't know if some of you folks have misplaced your drain plug like I did several years ago. Looked for it everywhere, it was just gone...showed up last year after I tore back seat out of 14 ft tincan to repair hole in the hull.

Anyways, originally I put spare plugs in both tackle boxes (saltwater/freshwater), but now I have 5 tackle boxes so I keep a spare plug on board in a sealed container.

Now there's no way for the plug to disappear into bilge or wherever...at least that's the new theory.

A couple of the gals left to head home, feeling kinda sad.:( But we packed in a lot of activities, still one gal left. Weather has been kicking up here pretty good, steady 35 kts and gusting to 45 kts.

Hoping to get out tomorrow for the crab and prawn fishing as the tides are good only 1-2 ft drop as apposed to the 12-14 ft drop last week. Doesn't look good though.

what i sometimes do for stuff like that (i use the Mexican lid support plan for my camper shell hatch----old fuel line split lengthwise and slid over the rams of nonfunctional pneumatic struts) is tie it to something with 65lb test spectra or better yet, crimp up a steelcoat wire "leader" to attach it to something solid. both have held up to prodigious abuse. but i like your plan too!

well, its still blowing hard, so I fixed a soft spot on the boat floor. I started by using a sharp blade to outline a capital "I" and peeling back the vinyl floor.

Next cut out a rectangle piece of plywood, using a skilsaw and a jigsaw. As It was close to the edge of the side of the hull, I lifted the jigsaw up and only allowed 1/2" of the blade to cut with. Also, adjusted the skilsaw blade to cut only a 1/2" depth too.

Here is the cut out piece of plywood

and here is the foam removed that shows some blue paint on the bottom of the hull. I think someone has already changed the floor, but didn't paint or epoxy the plywood.

Unless someone else has this blue paint on their hull or knows why it would be there?

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

I vacuumed up the sawdust and cut a new patch using the old piece as a template. Then I cut 4 pieces of plywood to secure around the cut out section. These pieces are screwed under the boat floor.

DSC06030.jpg

I added another piece of plywood across the bottom of the new trim support pieces for additional support.

I used 3 screws per trim piece on all 4 sides

As it was a warm day and the old plywood floor was wet, I let it dry for a couple of hours before applying glue. For insurance, I stapled the vinyl down to stop the edges from lifting. If Tundra Rocks is reading this, I hope this helps you patch your floor if that is what your going to do.

Finished patch:)

DSC06038.jpg

The foam was not wet or heavy and had large grains to it

DSC06028.jpg

As I needed a brush to apply the glue...I made one:)

My gal patched a cut in the boat top, added some straps to the boat top's zippers to hold onto when closing the front hatch, and changed the velcro strips that were installed the wrong way.

DSC06029.jpg

DSC06027.jpg

PS. She carefully cut off the stitching from the velcro strips and then sewed it back on the same way it was to start with:redface: Yup, she had to cut off the stitching again and re-sew it again.

No, I did not laugh...I just took the above photo while she watched me do it:D

Thanks for the detailed photos...great job on the patch work. Creative homemade tools are the best. Keeps from having to make so many trips to the hardware store.

Do you know what type of material you used for the bow cover?

I believe it was Sunbrella... at least that is what we were told. My gal just used a home model sewing machine, but an industrial model would have been better.

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

The winds abated yesterday, so we booted it up island and took the SS for a cruise and some bottom fishing. We caught lots of fish with my gal's sister catching the biggest a lingcod. She is pretty happy and thanked us for another great day on the water. Tonight she leaves, but its been an incredible adventure....here's a pic of her lingcod

DSC06044.jpg

I landed several different species of fish, including 2 undersize lings, that were released, but I kept 3 kelp greenlings

DSC06042.jpg

My gal caught a nice rockcod, sorry no pic...she helped steer the boat so I could fish as I acted as a guide for everyone last time out. Beauty day and can't wait to go again.

On another note, I had turned my trim tab to the right to off-set the slight pull to the right. Well, it is still pulling to the right, I'm going to adjust it more to the right to see if it will help again. Its not a hard pull, but it is annoying. From what I have read it could also be from improper trim (up/down) adjustment on the outboard or from incorrect height/mount adjustment of the outboard.

Hopefully it is just the trim tab:)
