The shop % is based on what they can buy the part for from a wholesaler, and policy at each shop for parts mark up set by the owner.
Not every shop will get the same wholesale price, nor will they all mark it up the same. Shops make their money from parts and repair work.
It's just the American way.

I am sure they charge full retail for the parts. Were the prices you looked up retail prices for OEM parts?

Its not like their is a boat parts store on ever corner. Its a small limited specialty market, the cost of making storing and transporting vs the cost to point of sale and keeping things on the shelf. It is what it is. Plus 100.00 a hour on labor.

Re: parts mark up?

I try to do as much as possible myself, but at 64 yrs old there is a limit on what I can handle. I am extremely fanatic on routine maintainence so I have few repairs. However when something big happens I have found a small auto repair facility not far away and the owner is an avid boater. After some lengthy boating and fishing stories I found out that he does his own repair work and some repair for others. We discussed boat repair further and he does my work on the side, after hours of the auto repair, I go over and help him, sort of his gopher which allows him to work faster. He has done a couple jobs for me at a greatly reduced cost compared to the high cost of marine shops. By my being there I have seen the quality work he does and am very comfortable with his work and he now has my auto business as well. Sometimes it pays to ask or shop around for recommended private repair services.

im thinking 15yrs ago this would hold water but look at the site your on rite now we can order the same parts or from a million other places at pretty good prices. most marine shops do the same thing then mark them up sky high? they don't make or store alot of parts..

Typically if you change a clutch dog, you change the gears that it drives. You sure there aren't more parts being quoted than you think?

I purchased the gear set beacause you need to change all 4 pieces and the seal set for 250 and they were asking 700 in parts and 300 in labor..

Then buy your own parts and fix it your self, or take up golf.

Re: parts mark up?

When I worked as a mechanic, this was a common question.
And always was asked when it was a clutch.
The usual thing was "I can buy a new clutch disc for XXXX dollars and your charging me 5 times that much!"
The I would have to explain that my price included a new pressure plate, release bearing, maybe a clutch slave, resurfaced flywheel, rear main and pilot bearing.
Usually they would again say "I can buy a new clutch disc for XXXX dollars and your charging me 5 times that much!".............

And the parts you could buy for $250 were OEM? What are you working on here?

Re: parts mark up?

Here is what I tell my customers when they complain about parts cost.

I need to charge $XY for the job to be profitable. I can charge you $Y in parts and $X for labor or $X in parts and $Y in labor, which do you want?

Customers that buy the parts themselves to save money get the worst deal. Not only did they pay retail for the parts, the labor is increased to marked up for the lost parts revenue.

Re: parts mark up?

generally, a repair shop will charge 100-150% parts mark up. They do because they have to ,this keeps the doors open. This mark up pays everyone's payroll ,taxes, cost of doing business which is a lot.The cost of labor charged alone will not keep any repair faculty afloat.
You can always shop around to see who can give you the best deal. You can also ask them to use the parts you already bought at a discount price, but I doubt they will. The parts you might have bought might not be up to the repair facilities standard thru experience,if they install the parts you provided and they fail? Then your out there in the world trashing the installer because in your mind, they installed them incorrectly.Comes down to this. A repair facility guarantees, not only workmanship, but also the parts they installed.
Sometimes, Im forced to install a customer supplied part. They get a written warning, no guarantee or warranty it will even work after its installed. If it does not, they get charged again.
Or, you could do it yourself? Wish you well.

Re: parts mark up?

Marine repair can bee much like the old west...it's seasonal. I have been in the auto industry for yrs and generally know when the bill is being padded so to speak. Some of my earlier experience's almost make me blush lot's of half truth's out there so be aware. There are also some damm good mech's out there. Just recently i popped a merc drive and need a authorized merc dealer to diag the drive's conditon....i met this old guy about 60 took the drive to him and he took that entire drive apart in what seemed like ten minutes. Put the upper back together checked the spacing in another 10 minutes and made the repair estimate.

The estimate came in around 2400 with reinstallation....i took the estimate and flipped him a hundered for his time. A new drive was about half that i was quite pleased and thought i had done well......until i realized i had left the old lower with him so i gave him a call as to picking it up...i could hear his smile thourgh the phone...gunner you got a new drive and some money in your pocket i got a hundred and a old lower unit.....I guess that just how the marine business roll's...or better said Only In America.......:D

Re: parts mark up?

I love how everyone with a computer can buy wholesale. I had people buy convertible tops and expect me to warranty the ebay junk. they want me to install a crappy cheap product give them a half price labor. so let me think a minute.......so harder to install junk product, customer who thinks my time is worth nothing and from prior experience , once I touch the vehicle and put the crap on they will ***** and moan about everything. tire got a flat, cigarette lighter wont work, tail light burn out, fuel gauge stopped working and transmission went out. so I tell them labor plus 50% and then back down to regular price for cash..... so what I am saying is business is hard when people think they shouldn't pay retail or full labor. when the power company gives me a discount and my rent gives me a discount ill think about it. remember when the parts don't fit or are poor quality its on you. the parts have to be ordered and warranty by the shop when they buy them. so if you buy them and the install fails your going to take it back, probably with an attitude. you will want the guy to redo it for free. if he screwed up maybe but if the part fails its on you. that's the chance you take. it costs a lot of money to have a shop......oh and try and get a online parts company to warranty anything.....ever

I don't believe they are either. However, they're free to mark them up so get a quote and shop around. Or, simply ask them what the markup is. They'll probably say 30%ish.

This happens a lot when customers start googling. They find some guy on ebay selling off old stock for 10 cents on the dollar, or inferior aftermarket parts and think they're getting ripped off.
