Re: Really loud Boat Motors

in the slip across from me is a 1970s Gibson House boat that has been completely redone- including new twin Hi Output 350s with thru hull- when he 1st fires it up it is obnoxiously loud but quites down pumping water thru.
I live 1/2 mile the lake and can hear out boards heading out fishing early.
I do not get the captains call exhaust in the no wake zone. HEY LOOK AT ME!
MY BOAT IS FAST JUST IDLING!

FWIW - I hate 'em. Just disrupts the hell out of a nice day on the lake. Unfortunately on Lake Lanier, people think having the loudest boat is some kind of right of passage or something.

I love the thru hull captains call on my 225 crownline. I will sit at the marina and rev it I love the way it sounds againist the bar and grill where everyone eats. My boys are 2 and 5 thier eyes light up when they hear the motor start coming off the trailer. The same way mine lit up when my dad would start our family boat.

Its not just an I/O thing. I have an outboard motor, and I wish it were quieter. I like a nice moderately loud exhaust system on a car. But on the water, I like my boat quiet. I prefer to hear the sound of the water on the hull and the sound of wind. Exhaust sound on the water is just unwanted noise to me.

mr universe 1973- you are a fortunate man.
you were born in 1973- my error.
I guess I'm for comfort over straight exhaust- I've had them in the past but since I can barley hear a cell phone in my pick up trk now -the 1990 Silverado HO350 with glass packs is long gone- but it was fun to see valet parking guys the facial expressions as they would peel out away to park though. but my 2008 VortecMAX has 100 more HP bone stock.

I always figured the guys with loud pipes just couldn't afford a true performance exhaust system that wasn't loud, sounded good, gave better overall performance, better powerband, more low-end performance and didn't burn the valves in the engine prematurely.

On a side note, it IS funny how a Honda GoldWing (with an engine that makes about as much noise as a sewing machine) has so much better power and performance than an equivalent-sized engine on a Harley.

Re: Really loud Boat Motors

Sorry for getting slightly off topic, but I couldn't agree more. My first ride ever on a motorcycle was on a brand new Yamaha xt225 with an extremely quiet exhaust. My wife had just surprised me with it for our anniversary. I'll never forget riding it into town and a little boy all of 4 or 5 years old covers her ears with a scared look on his face as I ride by. From that moment on, I decided I would always strive for the quietest exhaust I can find.

Years later, I am still amused when I pull up next to a roaring 1800cc harley on my quiet DL1000 and know I can blow his doors off with the twist of my wrist (yes, the dl is heavilly modded, putting down around 130 HP with stock exhaust). Noise does not mean power.

Back to boating, I do tend to get carried away with making motorboat sounds now and then. Its most embarassing when people can hear me over the monster Merc 39 (3.9 hp) pushing me along at a brisk paddling speed!

Or, as my old Triumph-riding friend in high school used to say to Harley riders:

"If it don't go and you ain't proud, pull the muffler and make it LOUD!"

Back easy my friend! :D

Feels like everyone is taking it with a grain of salt...plus, everyone making posts in the morning are people at work (probably, at least I am). And being at work as opposed to the water, we want to complain about everything!:)
