Hi all,

As you can see in the picture, 2013-06-06 08.50.10.jpg of the 4 straight slot screws holding the coils down, only 2 have flat washers in addition to the star type washers, and neither of the longer phillips head screws have flat washers, only star type. Don't know if they're supposed to, or if they got lost, or what. Should I add flat washers to any of these screws before reinstalling coils?

Thanks

Jeff

No need for any, or any additional? 2 screws already had them on.

Hi whitejd12. Here's are some great links that can walk yout through the ignition rebuild and other routine jobs.

3 HP Evinrude Lightwin Ignition System Tune-Up 1952-1967

Maintaining Johnson E & FD Serie

Thanks, I notice in reading the links you attached, that I should lub the rocker posts and cam? This is what I have,2013-06-06 13.42.40.jpg, Evinrude/Johnson "6 in 1" multi purpose lubricant. Will that work, or should I buy something different? Also, can you get specific on what type of silicone to use for the spark plug boots.

Thanks

Jeff

As long as you have the magneto torn down this far why don't you study how the armature plate moves then take it off and lubricate the wear surfaces. There are 3 pieces that are subject to wear and the plate alone is over $300. I do this every time I change the points.

After reading some, I guess I'll take the condensors and points back off. Gotta lub rocker posts and cam and adjust points first, then install condensors then coils. Is that right?

OK, I'll check into it. I'm scared and nervous to go much further for fear that I'll never get it back together right, or break something major in the process. :scared::scared::scared:

That a look at this diagram, parts 10 and 12. OEM Parts

The armature plate screws to 12 with 10 sanwitched in between. Number 10 is solid mounted to the block. Just pay attention to the location of the screws because the parts may have unused holes. I like to use a thread lock on the screws with no lock washers. The type with medium hold. BTW I use the same marine wheel bearing grease I use for my trailer wheels for all the wear points on my motors just because I have it around.

I've seen someone post this more than once regarding tear downs..."your camera is your friend". When I'm tearing down a carb., armature, gearcase or whatever I take a lot of pictures until I am completely familiar with the process. Works for me most of the time. Rick.

Got the armature plate off, what do I need to look for and where should I grease, and what kind of grease? I have no grease/lub except what I posted earlier in this thread.

Thanks

I edited my earlier post because I don't look before I leap.
If you look at the bottom of the armature plate you will see a machined flat surface that runs around the center hole. That rubs on the brass ring that's solid mounted to the engine block. Under that brass ring is another ring made of aluminum. That ring also has a machined surface that rubs on the brass ring. The armature plate and that aluminum ring are screwed together, sandwitching the brass ring in between. That's what produces the pivot point for the armature plate. Lube the machined surfaces with a thin but complete coat of grease. I use that same marine wheel bearing grease that I use on my trailer for all wear points on my motors simply because I have it around. Did I mention that the armature plate is over $300, not to mention the brass ring at $100. Best to take care of them.

use dielectric grease on the plug wire to coil connection, it can be found at any autoparts store or radio shack.

Looking at your pictures, it looks like someone has already applied grease to the surfaces because they don't come from the factory with that much grease in my experience. It does look a little old though. I should have said grease the machined surface on the armature plate outside of where the attachment screws come through. Plus grease the bore of that brass center sleeve on the armature plate. No need to grease the outside of that brass center sleeve nor the surface where the attachment screws come through. Hope I'm not making myself a pain with all this information. I always try to help someone who's willing to learn. Makes me wish you lived down the street.

Don,

OK, got the grease, removed the armature plate, greased where you told me, reinstalled plate, no problem. Already had installed new camshaft/flywheel key. Then began reinstalling components, regapped points to .020, installed condensors and coils (w/o flat washers ;)) using dielectric grease on plug boots and hooked up all wires. 2013-06-07 13.26.22.jpg

Then I installed new shorting switch I ordered. No problem. 2013-06-07 13.40.06.jpg2013-06-07 13.40.17.jpg

No I can reinstall flywheel and check for spark, but first have to buy or borrow a torque wrench and spark tester. Hopefully I'll have good news yet this weekend. Thanks for everyone's help.

lookin' good white. you can test for spark without the torque wrench. just snug down the flywheel nut by hand and use a small inline and/or gap tester. you can spin the flywheel by hand, or by using the pull starter. just make sure the fuel is disconnected and the spark plugs themselves are removed. once you have confirmed a strong spark capable of jumping a 1/4" gap, then you can torque it down to the final spec.
