Re: St. Augustine in May/June: UPDATED: Now With Dates!

More than likely some big jack cravelle at the dock this time of the year. I'll bring some saltwater dock fishing tackle, net, hooks, sinkers, rigs, bait buckets, filet knife, etc.....Kimi is always willing to teach the young'uns how to do this type of fishing.......Me? I always have the pleasure of rigging, netting, and cleaning.

Sasto,

You, my Friend, are AWESOME!!! Kimi too!!! This is going to be the greatest time. So sorry it's just for two days. We'll just have to pick up where we left off when September comes around...:D Enough of that, though. We're gonna have to some how make those two days last...;)

...And remember, I'll be Kimi's first mate when "You Da Man" fishing!!!:D:D:D

Sasto, I fully agree with veritas honus, you are the man, I have been thinking will the rods fit in the truck if I break them down and what tackle and accessories should I take so the boys can fish off the dock. That reminds me, I have to get new pfd's for them, Granny will nut up on me worrying that they will fall in, course I guess we could just tie a rope to them. :D I would love for them to hook something big, they have fished, they have not caught yet. This just gets better and better. :D

No worries...I'll bring plenty of gear. I don't claim to be a professional, but I do get paid to fish......at home. We will be sure the young'uns hook up some fish. Catching them is all on them. :)

I'll also be bringing a few rods and reels with me, including tackle. I'll also have Sabiki rigs with me. Those are the perfect rigs for kids because it almost assures they get some type of little fish whenever it's dropped, if you can get them untangled from it each time they bring it up!! The docks have pinfish, some small reds, mullet, jacks, and whatever else happens to be cruising thru. I also see squid and crabs swimming by ocassionally, too. I'll double check when i get there to see if they can keep us in the deeper water. The tide really drops there at low tide and it would be nice to do a little fishing without having to worry about the tide.

Alright, Fireman... How many more days???:D

Well, yesterday was 30 days. Today marks 29 days, but today's almost over, so let's say 28. In 2 days, it'll be Friday...and since weekends don't count, we're down to 26. There are 4 more weekends until the get together, so that's 8 more days off the list and that puts us at 18. Mondays are usually hectic, so we won't count them as they go by so quickly, so there's 4 more out of the loop and we're down to 14. Fridays are a relax day and usually payday, so those are involved in the mix, so we're at 10. Basically, VH...just over a week :D:D

Kinda funny, I can hardly even imagine having ever not being part of this little group of ours...

Now scheduling the last few things prior to our trip. Haul the boat and check the zincs on the transom, prop shafts, rudders, and trim tabs. Double check the props and stancions for damage after our soft grounding. Check all thru hull fittings. Pressure wash the bottom and touch up any bottom paint spots. Splash it again and flush & fill the water tank next week. Top off fuel tasnk (that should be cheap...need about 160 gallons ).

One week prior, she'll get another day long bath and pull the canvas enclosure for cleaning/water repellant.

Getting closer every day....

Is that 160 gallons per "tasnk"?:p:D I just remembered you'd said in a previous post or another thread, that your boat holds 250 gallons. Is that one tank or two?

I guess your soft grounding had slipped my mind... Let's think positive, no damage.

How often do you change your zincs? I'm thinking the boat's in fresh water for 1/2 the year, and salt water the other 1/2. Am I correct? If so, do you swap magnesium and zinc back and forth? I'm very interested in your routine. Seems like a terrific way of life.

Hope all goes well for you, Fireman. Sounds pretty routine. Soft grounding? Probably just removed some scum.

I think I will show up on Friday.....anybody going to be there?

Re: St. Augustine in May/June: UPDATED: Now With Dates!

My plan is to drive down after work on Friday, that means leaving my house 5:30, hopefully no later, I have about 2 1/2 hr drive to get there. If wife can get off early then we may be there a little earlier. I think VH and Fireman were talking about meeting in Jax and boating back together, don't know if the work related stuff for his wife has altered that or not, feel sure they will be in here later and let everyone know.

Sure thing, sasto. We'll be leaving home at 0dark30, and getting to St Augustine early morning. Nlain's correct. Fireman and I have been talking about meeting on the water off Jax and boating back together. My wife still wants to play that by ear, so to speak. I have a feeling, though, my children will convince her that it's the best thing to do...;) At what point on Friday are you thinking about arrival? Fireman was planning to arrive in St Augustine sometime in the afternoon. One of the things I'd mentioned in previous posts, regarding boating to Jax from the municipal Marina, was the opportunity to familiarize with local waters.

Correct, you are, nlain...:) Glad you'll be getting there Friday, too. We all just seem to be on the same sheet of music all around. Friday the 17th's gonna be a good night!!!:D

I'm really glad it's expanded to Friday night...

290 gallons in a single centered "tasnk".

I guess your soft grounding had slipped my mind... Let's think positive, no damage.

Amen, brother....

November thru June in the brackish water of Lake Monroe. That is actually near the head waters of the St. Johns River. When we meet, ask me why the St. Johns River flows north....

June thru October is salt. It is a nice change of pace, but it isn't without it little pesky irritants (we'll save that for the ride in). I continue with zinc thruout the year. They work best for all around conditions and I swap them twice a year. It's easier since I haul out once before each trip, just to visualize the bottom. I don't want any surprises.

I change the 4" rudder pancake zincs, the 4" trim tab zincs, and the 1 1/2" shaft zincs. The large bar zinc on the transom (which bonds the engines and electrical system) only needs to be changed out every 2-3 years. The pencil zinc in the generator gets changed out annually.

That's the new math....

Man, I like the way you think!!!:D

In so far as the St John's flowing north for a while... Uh, elevation and terrain features?...;) Wasn't aware of this little fact until the first time you'd mentioned it in a post. Never looked in to it. Just escaped me, I guess...

Good info about the zincs. Thank you. The zincs on my boat are the same ones which were on her when my Father-in-Law bought her in 2006. They still look new. I have to admit, I never even looked to see whether they were magnesium or zinc. As previously stated, she's never tasted salt water. She'll be in the water for a whole week at the Municiple Marina. I doubt that one week will have any noticable effect on them, but I'm certainly curious and will share the info. Now that I'm thinking about it, though, I think they are zinc. My father-in-law and I talked about that when he first gave her to me. He mentioned that they still look new because they're zinc, and not magnesium. The whole outdrive looks pretty much new. Pretty impressive for an almost twenty year old boat. She's been very well maintained. She's also very much loved. She returns that love to my family. She's safe, smooth, fast, reliable, beautiful, and an absolute pleasure to be with!!! Can't wait for you to meet her.:)

They rarely need changing unless the boat spends an extreme amount of time in the water and in an energized state (batteries on with poor groundfing or shore power connections). No trailered boat I have ever owned needed a zinc replacement unless there was a problem. They just aren't that suseptible to galvanic corrosion without the power/water combo.

I don't care who yar, that was funny!!!:D

That's similar to: why do the trees in Manhattan lean to the west?...

...Because New Jersey sucks!!!:p

More great info... Thank you. I knew it was the combination of water and electricity; but I thought that in salt water it occured without exessive electricity.

Re: St. Augustine in May/June: UPDATED: Now With Dates!

It always amazed me that boat zincs were dissolving away until I sat back and thought "Take a tub full of hydrogen sufide cells, hook them and all of the metal parts together, energize the entire structure, add 110v power from an unsecured power plant, and immerse the whole shebang in a giant brine solution with 200 other boats."

It's a wonder the whole boat isn't covered with a pale green corrosive residue from day 1...

Sounds great!!!

Don't know what I was thinking when I told you we'd be arriving early morning on the 17th... That was the original plan. We'll already be there.

Thanks to my wife (and The Gerber Babies Blog), this has turned into what will be a very interesting vacation. She's working with two different PR people. One of them is with the City of St Augustine, who will be providing us with Hotel accomodations and all kinds of fun and interesting things to do from the 14th through the 18th. From the 18th through the 22nd, we've been provided an oceanside house by the St Francis Inn Bed-N-Breakfast. Again, with tours and activities for my wife to review. We're looking forward to the resteraunt reviews!!!:) Heck, we're looking forward to all of this.

The 17th and 18th are stricktly iboats days. We will only have to check out of our hotel, and into the beach house. Other than that, no obligations.:D

I'll be keeping the boat at the marina for a week. The daily rate is 19.95 per foot. The weekly rate is 9.95 per foot. Everything is just falling into place for this trip.

Looking forward to meeting up with you on Friday 17JUN11!!!:D:D:D
